Since you can just use healing potions and such if you want, are healing spells worth putting points into?
Are normal healing spells worth the skll points?

I give heal to all my mages. Group heal is good too.

Yes. Mass Rejuvenation and Heal are great, especially considering that melee cannot drink potions while stunned or frozen.

I personally find heal line and the spirit healer line a waste of points beyond the first mage. Between Heal, Regeneration, Group Heal, and Lifeward, I personally haven't ever felt the need to want an extra set of heals.
You can run parties w/out a healer mage, but you gotta bump up which health threshold you want them to drink a pot on. This is because if you cut it too close, and they get cc'ed, they're liable to get killed on the spot.
Not only that, but reviving in-battle is restricted to the Revival spell already, so if a member dies, then they're done for good for the rest of the battle.
So yeah, you can have no healer mage, but just be prepared to spend a lot more on potions. If you decide to have a healer mage, only having it on one mage would suffice.

I find it's better to have CC and AoE damage. It depends on your playstyle though. In most battles my PC mage alone can keep an entire room of enemies immobilized for about 1 minute, at the end of that minute there aren't enough enemies left alive that I need healing for the party. Of course in the big boss battles that CC isn't as useful, while healing still is useful (well most bosses that can't be CCed take off more damage in a single hit than you can heal). I wouldn't get more than heal and group heal though. The rest of those spells are best spent elsewhere.

well the reason most people choose spirit healer is because of healing the party individually can be annoying, group heal heals the entire party. lifeward protects the ally incase they are getting whooped by an enemy. and cleansing aura deals continuous healing to the party. its actually better than the standard. but if you dont want to become a spirit healer the basic work just fine.

I have run 2 mages now and the first mage was a healer, it was quite handy to have the ability to rez in combat, and one nice thing about the rez is that so long as the party members who are down are in close proximity the rez gets them all up.
I had one fight against the high dragon in Haven that i brought Allister as a tank, Leliana to open boxes and use a bow, Wynne as the dedicated healer, and my DPS mage with a few spells in spirit healer. During this particular fight through an unfortunate turn of events Leliana, Allister got killed pretty quick which left just me and Wynne. The dragon came at squishy little ole me because i had been smacking the dog snot out of it and Allister was having trouble holding aggro anyway even with taunt and threaten up. So only Wynne is up i have her rez Allister and because Leliana and I were close to Allister we got rezzed as well. So Wynne is down but the wipe has been averted. So I am slapping the pause button like a monkey on crack;
pause injury kits in use,
pause potions for everybody,
pause Allister develop agro on dragon,
pause buffs,
pause rez Wynne,
pause etc etc etc
If it had not been for myself having the spirit healer traits along with Wynne things could have gone alot worse, as it was the fight lasted quite a bit but we did win that round. While not ideal for every situation sometimes having another spirit healer even if that character only dabbles in it is enough to get by the tougher moments in the game.

P.S. As far as i can tell from reading, the higher your magic stat the bigger the heal should be, so if you set up to dps like a crazy person, when you actually use a heal it should be a bigger heal than someone with a lower magic stat.

The spell "Heal" itself is absolutley worth it
The other stuff in its branch though? I don't think so

Even for a secondary mage, it's probably worth it to put a single point in Heal. There are plenty of times when you need a quick spot heal and your primary healer is stuck on cooldown.
In fact, that's often what I ended up using Lifeward for - an emergency heal when none of the other options were charged.
