And i hate to think this way because i'd be doing away with ME2's story and it's great characters, plus the first 99% of ME3. But the way I see it, Commander Shepard stopped Sovereign and Saren, and prevented the return of the Reapers. Without the conduit, the Reaper horde had no way to reach the Milky Way Galaxy and remained stuck within the vast empty void of Dark Space. Shepard and his crew became galactic heroes, and he remained a Spectre the rest of his life, stopping anything that would threaten the stability of peace in the Galaxy.
