All in all, despite not really enjoying the ending, I loved the fact, that BW deliberately sidestepped the cliche "giant monster comes out of nowhere, avoid it's pattern attacks and shoot it in the weak spot" ending. I think of games like Arkham Asylum, Halo 3, or numerous others whose narrative impac has been lessened because they tried to shoehorn in a giant boss battle when a simple dialogue exchange would have done the job much better. The fact that they showed restraint in this regard at least demonstrates that they cared, even if you think they totally effed up.
Harbinger is not from nowhere.
Maybe I'm just a 90s kid guy, but I would actually prefer a boss fight. Besides, the Human Reaper didn't just "show up." Mass Effect 2 established that the Collectors were harvesting humans to build this Reaper since day 1. We just didn't find out why they were harvesting humans until we got to their Omega 4 base.
And to it's defense, the fight was similar to the final fight in ME3. It had lasers too. The Destroyer Reaper throws random beams at you as well while you fight brutes and banshees. At least you could stop the Human Reaper from shooting you in the middle of getting flanked by Collectors for a while by getting his health down a certain amount.
IMO I think that some kind of boss fight with Harbinger would've been satisfying after hyping him up so much in ME2. Even if it was just reaper enemies he decided to take control of and morph into a new form/class.
In the end I don't even care about it. It would have been cool and all, and it's just a thought, but that would have just made people more frustrated at the space

ending because it would take more work to get there.
