Processor: AMD A6-3500 APU with Radeon HD Graphics, MMX, 3dnow (3 CPUs) ~2.1ghz, Clock speed 2098mhz
Memory: 3326MB Ram
Display adapter: AMD Radeon Hd 6570 aprox memory 1024mb, Main driver ati2dvag.dll version 6.14.0010.7256, date 2/14/2012.
Sound Adapter: VIA HD Audio Output, driver viahduaa.sys Version 6.00.0001.10100 (English), Date 12/2/2011
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 3
Direct X: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Mass Effect Version: Amazon digital download. Patched to 1.02.
Problem: When I launch Mass Effect 1, the bioware logo comes up and then the game stops responding. I do hear the sound that accompanies the Bioware theme but after that I hear nothing and the game stops responding. I control alt and delete and it says in my task manager that it is not responding.
Things I have tried:
Launching Me1 using only the primary CPU core instead of all three. I've tried running in windowed mode. I've tried reinstalling and repatching. I've tried messing with different resolutions and sound settings (both hardware and software).
One strange thing I do notice from the config tool is that the Mass Effect config claims I only have 1cpu core, but when I run the game and check affinity all three are checked off, and from task manager I see the three separate graphs under performance and dxdiag also tells me that I have three cores so I'm fairly sure that all the cores are running like they should.
Assistance is most appreciated.

I fixed my problem. Apparently ATI's video card also has sound drivers, and it installed those when I was originally setting up it's drivers. These drivers must have been conflicting with my VIA onboard audio, because unstalling them fixed my crashing problem. Now I can launch, and the game is running beautifully.
So for those who have crashing problems in the future...check your audio devices. If you have more than one in device manager, you may have an audio device conflict and this can cause crashing.
