Twitter:
rmaloy has helpfully offered a place for us to tweet our run-ins with this bug over here (well, he offered almost a month ago but I got distracted by other games, sorry).

So I bothered a mod about this issue earlier and he told me they've been looking into the issue, but to help them out we should provide our Origin ID (not login name). Either toss up a new post with your ID or edit your current one, folks! On reflection it'll probably be easier to go through the thread if we just post something new, like:

Credits lost: 150k
Bioware points lost: 0
Origin ID: Pandaman102

There's a bug in how the MP store processes "refunds" after a failed pack purchase where it doesn't take if you exit the game, here's the process in how it can happen:

- Have enough credits to purchase a pack (61,250 credits for example).
- Attempt to buy a Veteran's pack for 20,000 credits.
- Receive a "failed transaction error".
- Credits drop to 41,250.
- Game pauses as it communicates to server, credits go back up to 61,250.
- Quit multiplayer, exit game.
- Restart game, enter multiplayer.
- Credits now at 41,250.

Tested this several times (PC version), lost 100k credits, but also discovered that if I play a round right after the "refund", THEN exit the game, my credit balance will be correct. Now given how shoddy the network is at times, it's possible that any failure to purchase a pack will also be followed by failure to create/join MP games - and the natural response would be to restart the game to see if that fixes anything; losing credits is fine, but it's possible this will also cause the loss of Bioware points.

Possible workaround to ensure a successful purchasem courtesy of GuinnessPint.
Update 1: Alas, someone else has pointed out it doesn't work for them, so I guess it was just luck of the draw.
Update 2: I'm still not sure if it's just a massive coincidence, but I was able to spend my hoarded credits (two million, whoo) in two seperate clumps of purchases and only lost one Recruit Pack - but that was immediately after messing around with unlocked stuff for half an hour. I would suggest restarting the game completely before trying the above, just to ensure you have a "clean" connection to test with.

Another possible workaround, posted by someone else (I remember seeing the post as well, can't remember who either), but strongly suggested by Wynne.
Update 1: I see that someone else has reported this not working for them either.
Update 2: The workaround still works for some people, just follow the above instructions, but when you get the purchase error popup, do not hit "Ok", instead tab out and immediately disconnect your connection. It doesn't guarantee you'll get your items, but it's something to improve your chances.

As a related warning, if you lost Bioware points due to this be sure to let EA/Bioware handle this. Getting your credit card company to reverse charges is a bannable offense in any other digital store/online service and I think we can all agree EA would be the last company to be an exception to this.

Regarding partial successful purchases: Some people are reporting that they are receiving items despite the failed transaction message, just that it's not marked as new. Problem is most seem to be basing these conclusions on observing a few new item and assuming that applies to the whole purchase (i.e.: I saw I unlocked a new class, I probably got everything else as well). Personally I can attest this is not the case: out of seven Veterans Packs I only received one Incisor, no class unlocks, additional class customizations, weapon unlocks, weapon upgrades, or even medigel (hard to miss when you have zero medigel).
Update 1: Went for a long time without this bug, but when I got hit again I gave some of the suggestions to immediately quit and reconnect seemed to work. It would appear the game keeps your previous purchase in cache to give to you when you restart, however it's limited only to one purchase - that is to say, if you fail multiple purchases in one session, it will only give you items for the last transaction (so if you go Premium, Premium, Premium, Recruit, you lose out 302k credits and only get a Recruit Pack's worth of gear).

Still, if anyone feels brave (particularly those reporting successes) they can note down everything they had before a failed purchase and compare it with what they get afterward.
