No, she is not. She is a character I'm playing and you must be real new to the whole RPG thing to claim that a character represents the player. What about all those people playing as orcs, vampires and zabrak in games? There's a way bigger difference there, they're not even playing a human! Why does nobody bother them? Because you cannot blame them with weird tastes or call them names, isn't as controversial superficially.

When you watch a movie, you're not the lead. Same goes here. I actually sometimes make decisions that goes against what I'd really like to if I was the character. Because it's what my Shepard would do, but not me.

Because it's called Role Playing.

I always play as Zoey in L4D, It started in my childhood when I had to take a name for my "link" character, I'd take a female name. In a game you can be somebody you're not. And why be "just another guy" ? Why not impersonate myself as "another gender" just because I can and the game allows me to?

I'm a bit amazed by some of the bull**** critics people have if they see someone kissing another with same gender. Then they gather religion, and feminism into the discussion and no one is getting to the point of the game anymore.

It's not as if the story (from Sheperd's view) is even made up in such a way that you would have totally different behaviors between the gender you play, so you're not going to play this game "looking trough women's eyes" anyway. So what's the harm in choosing a female body, hearing a female voice and then

It's just an interesting feeling, and I just like to play as a gracious female who can also stand ground and "take the lead", reminds me of star trek voyager :P.

Better VA. She's the reason I'm considering playing a female Trooper in swtor, because she's the VA for that, too.

Female that sounds tough as nails, compassionate when she needs to be, and doesn't sound like an airhead bimbo. Delivers her lines perfectly.

NO.
No.
And no.

Rather subjective. Personally I watch videos of Volkan Shepard and cannot care about him one bit. Same ol' 30-something caucasian male as in 95% of any other game lead.

Someone hinted a while ago that males only play as females for the lesbian "sex scenes", but I wouldn't know.

IMO Femshep has a much better voice actor.

You don't need to be an actual lizard to play as an argonian in Elder Scrolls games.

Traynormancing. ;p

But seriously, if males refused to play that way over gender stereotyping, we'd never play Metroid.

I see Mass Effect as an interactive movie, and FemShep can be a COMPLETELY different experience to ManShep. Though I pick ManShep first, I still have a FemShep save file.

Because it's an extra 40 hours of a pretty different experience.

Saying someone's choice of playing an opposite gender character is stupid, in a game about choices, is rather rude and immature and is no way conducive to conversation.

The fact that the OP can't form an argument beyond "stupid," while attempting to persuade us that only homogeneous relationships between digital avatars and players are correct is telling of his maturity.
People can relate to others through more than their gender.
We all appreciate and relate to the game in our own way, please stop trolling others with comments like "stupid" and attempts at pigeonholing the playerbase into such a limited way of thinking.

You asked questions. Please be polite and respectful as we have been.

Why I play femshep?
Because of voice acting and a strong female lead character.

You seem to have no idea what Role Playing means.

Please don't bring up that genre in the context of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3 or BioWare. They have nothing to do with each other.

And this is probably the stupidest thing I've read so far - some folks have said they don't play as a male shep because they rather stare at femshep's ass during the game.....wow.....I...don't know what to say. Are you serious? but You ARE femshep! She is you! would you get off looking at your own ass?

If I were FemShep, I'd look at my own ass.

Jennifer Hale has been a staple VA in BioWare games since the first Baldur's Gate.  Playing her reminds me of Old BioWare, she's like a link to that golden age.

This. I found out in the demo allow when Shep calls out to Wrex about to do the Krogan Air Drop. Hale delivers her "Wrex!" ten times better than Meer. But the look back after the kid blows up, the art guys made Male Shep's gaze more like "When I get back, your Reaper @s$ belongs to me!"  While FemShep's look made me think she was just thinking, "Oh, you Reapers are going to take so much crap for that."  Male Shep's look seemed to me he was more PO'ed than FemShep.

But overall, Hale does the better VO work.

You might think that's stupid but it really is a perfectly valid argument. It isn't among my reasons for playing FemShep, though.

...and why can't a straight guy relate to a woman? I decided to go with FemShep since my first playthrough from Mass Effect. Originally, I wanted to make her pretty, but she didn't end up that way, which I am glad because I love my Shepard now. She looks experienced in battle and someone who has had a rough life. I like female characters in video games who are strong-willed! There's nothing that annoys me more when a movie portrays a woman as a patheticly weak person! Luckily, there aren't a lot of games that do that.

So yeah, I like playing as FemShep because she's a woman who is incredibly strong... like The Boss from MGS3:

I never related to my first playthroughs of ME1 with male shep, probably because i thought the voice acting was a bit flat. I thought my femshep sounded better, acted better and i was always happier with the choice i made (because that was my second play through), so she became my favourite.

But my second playthrough ME3 will this time be with maleshep and I'm really looking forward to seeing Ashley again. I've missed her because my femshep had to chose Kaiden.

P.S. i also think if you're going to spend 30 hours looking at a someones rear end it's better to be a woman! ;)
