My first 2 playthroughs were male, i wanted to try femshep on my third and i can confirm that VA is better as is having some new options pop up in conversations that i didnt even know existed till i played as female (i.e. in ME2 you talk to a merc recruiter in afterlife and he tells you that theyre not recruiting strippers to which you can respond with a very amusing renegade interrupt, you dont get that as a male shep and its not the only time you get a different response)

I agree with OP, though you all have fine reasons for picking Femshep, I still find it odd.

Playing as MaleShep makes me feel a lot more connected to the character. It helps me relate more to him and the relationships he forms.

and also, you cant get wit' Tali as FemShep~

The reason I hear most frequently from my male friends is "if I've gotta stare at Shepard's ass for 60+ hours, Shepard's going to be a woman".

In a RPG, your avatar is not you. It can take on various aspects of your own personality, but there's no requirement to do so. My Shepherds can and often do differ from me in terms of gender, race, sexuality - and that's just the obvious stuff.

Because I find it way more interesting for the most badass human in the entire galaxy to be a woman instead of a man like 99% of all fiction. Plus I've been playing this character for three games now it's not like I'm going to switch now.

VA aside (though Hale is simply outstanding), the implication of the OP is that it's somehow incongruous for a male gamer to roleplay a female character.

Well guess what, I don't speak with a North American accent, I'm not as old as Shepard, I'm not as well-built as Shepard, and heck, as far as I know I'm not a space marine from the future. So maybe I should just stop playing Mass Effect altogether before my brain explodes.

I thought Meer was the better VA of the two.

Easy choice actually

Anything paragon = clichee
Male renegade = jerk
Female renegade = sexy

=>female. Also some lesbian action doesnt hurt. :D

So in essence a female renegade is more believable to me than a male one.

I'm a Sci-fi fan and the queen of Sci-fi is Sigourny Weaver who is amazing in the Alien movies then you have Kathryn Janeway who is amazing in Star Trek Voyager. Two brilliant examples why there should be more female lead roles in both movies and games. Jennifer Hale's voice acting is one of the best I've heard in a game. So for me it's no brainer why you should play a femshep.

I play Femshep mainly for Jennifer Hale... And Liara ;)

I'm not one for schmaltz but the Liara romance is absolutely beautiful!

For me the deciding factor is Hale. In my opinion her voice acting is way better than Meers.

I play as FemShep because I want to see all possible outcomes and how does changing the sex affects the game. But my canon Shepard is Sheploo soldier and nobody else.

For me playing femshep is part of having fun while I play nice game and I play both fem- and maleshep. But there is little bit more fun when I vent revenant to anything that moves with femshep.

Frankly, default Shepard looks kind of boring and any other male Shepard looks like a Russian kickboxer.

For one I prefer Hale over Meer, even though Meer is awesome as well. Having said that, I just started with FemShep for the sake of doing so in ME1, no particular reasoning behind it, then I just fell for Hale's acting and besides.. nothing is hotter than a strong woman, for instance; Sarah Walker from Chuck =P

They don't have to stare at MaleShep's ass if they don't want to. :P

Although bro-shep doesn't really fit the following, fem-shep offers a total avoidance of the generic super-steroid, testosterone-leaking space marine with an extra pair of balls where his cognitive processes ought to be.

And better voice acting.

Dat ass?

People bash on Mark Meer's voice acting but I don't see the problem. I preferred it actually. Some of Hale's lines felt a bit too "forced" and Meer does the renegade stuff perfectly.
