Simplest and best answer.

But I also happen to prefer her. She's one of my absolute favorite female protagonists in any media (for various reasons).

Definitely this. Male Shepard is hilariously goofy, especially during his Renegade lines or mellodramatic speeches.

1 - Because i have the choice.
2 - Because the generic male hero saving the world is kinda boring.
3 - Because of Hale.
4 - Because i can give her the face of my girlfriend and then pretend i can control her (my GF).
5 - Because of the Lesbian romances scenes (who can be weird with the previous point in mind).
6 - Because i don't really like Sheploo's face and the the custom possibilitys for male shep are even worse.
7 - Because of the "butt effect"  : i don't enjoy the sight of human males in general (butt, face or whatever you want).
8 - Because beeing a male playing a female character is'nt stupid a all, it's just a choice, whatever you can say.

:P

Never played a game with a creatable PC as a female. I always play as a character that looks just like me

What about roleplay ? Ring any bells ?

I might add that you are not a space soldier so why do you play as such ?

Because I'm a girl :D

Anyway, my boyfriend has a female Shepard as well and I'm pretty sure he does it for:
* Voice acting: who the hell chose Meer for Male Shepard? It's horrible.
* Face: any male face you can get is scary to say the least.

Femshep sounds bored and monotone, like she doesn't give a damn about anything, while default Shep's voice seems more emotional and changes to fit the situation...

I'll agree that Jennifer Hale's interpretation of Shepard comes across as quite flippant at times, which is probably my main criticism of her performance.

I played both, to check on the differences. Another thing is voice acting, while in the french version I do prefer the male actor to the female one, in the original version Jennifer Hale wipes the floor with Mark Meer. If I only had access to the english version I'd play femshep all the time for that reason alone.

Not for sexist reasons such as the looks
Not for typical bandwagon Meer hating
Not because of some insecure justifications such as "playing as a guy is GAY, man!"

But simply for more content. The option's there, why not?

7 - Because of the "butt effect"  : i don't enjoy the sight of human males in general (butt, face or whatever you want).

You know, I've never understood this kind of reasoning.

Why the heck are you staring at his ass in the first place? You're a man. You have balls between your legs......at least I hope you do.:bandit:

IMHO, if you can't play a game without constantly looking and thinking about doing the nasty to a man's ass, then.......well you might swing both ways after all.:P

Uhm. Okay.

Why do you want to "control" your girlfriend?

(And I can't help but add the obligatory "ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL!"-line, here.)

I have a thing for red heads that can wield a gun and throw a punch and look good while doing it. That's why I married one in the past and am dating one now.

Nah... It was just a joke you know ?

But well... Shepard is on screen about 99% of the time. So it's better to choose a good looking one. Don't you agree ?  B)

Moreover, femshep beeing a bit smaller, she take less place on screen and then, its better for gameplay (easy custom FOV, yay !).

Because she's the one who control's me in real life, i'm a weak weak man, doing whatever she wants... :D

I don't know why men play as women, but what I know is that I always play as a woman because I'm a woman in my real life and for me it's only natural to play with female characters. I find this option that gives us the possibility to play as a female so great, but only a natural way that things can go. And they should go. In this life we have a purpose, no matter the gender, and that should exist in video games too. We are made equal (no matter what someone could say to disagree).

I tried to play this game as a MaleShep, but it's not just my thing. Simple as that :)
I'm a hard-head woman myself :D

I have two characters of each sex. But I really prefer Hale's voice work, so if I were to start a fifth playthrough, I'd pick a female character.

?

when games like deus ex (HR or original) or Planescape Torment/Gears of War/Halo/Half life/etc come out, women have to put up playing as men... not that I mind, JC was awesome, as long as the character is cool. Anyway it's a different and interesting experience.

presumably the same is true for men, it's a chance to play a different kind of character. ME definitely is a different experience as femshep/maleshep.

I've looked over most walkthroughs on youtube, and pretty much all of them play as femshep.
My friends play as femshep too.....and its not even on their second playthrough.
Like....why? I don't get it....do they do that JUST for seeing some lesbian action? Jeez....

EDIT:
Some of you asked whats my take on this, and why do I think its wrong? Well.....
Its not wrong. Its just stupid. If you are a guy, you can never truly relate to a female character.
And if your gay, why wont you play as a gay maleshep?
It just doesnt make sense for guys to play as femshep, unless you're sexually confused.

I take a offense to your post. First you call me a perv. Then you call me stupid. Then you say I can't relate to a person that I created. Then you accuse my of being sexually confused.

1. My FemSheps never have LI's. Any male character Bioware creates for female PC's are usually lame.
2. I'd list a few things that proove I'm not stupid, but that would make me sound conceted. Suffice to say, I'm not.
3. I think you my playthroughs way too much to not be able to relate to MY creations.
4. I'm straight. Nothing confusing about that.
5. Stop being a less then agreeable person. (Trying to avoid insulting you. Don't want to get banned.)

Subjective.

Most of the time just an excuse a male use, when asked why do you like to play females.
Another common one, is " I rather stare at a female butt, or wantint to see lesbian sex".
