I've looked over most walkthroughs on youtube, and pretty much all of them play as femshep.
My friends play as femshep too.....and its not even on their second playthrough.
Like....why? I don't get it....do they do that JUST for seeing some lesbian action? Jeez....

EDIT:
Some of you asked whats my take on this, and why do I think its wrong? Well.....
Its not wrong. Its just stupid. If you are a guy, you can never truly relate to a female character.
And if your gay, why wont you play as a gay maleshep?
It just doesnt make sense for guys to play as femshep, unless you're sexually confused.

Why oh why do you ever see any movies where females are the protagonist?

I mean HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU EVER GONNA RELATE TO HER?

I mean, it's not like as if women are people now is it? <_<

Big difference, you don't control a TV actor, nor do you make ANY choices in a TV show or movie.
Pretty poor analogy right there.

I much prefer male Shepard, for numerous reasons. That said, I still enjoy playing FemShep once in a while :)

This is just going to turn into another Mshep V.S Fshep thread.

Can't you love them both equally. :crying:

Besides that the Voice acting of Jennifer Hale is P E R F E C T !

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

This is like saying that a male writer could never write a book with a female lead character.  Men can only wirte men, and women can only write women.  The idea is ridiculous.

To me it's really the ones who have an issue with playing the opposite sex that have a problem with their sexuality. Must think playing as the other gender is going to turn them gay or something. I really don't see why people care enough to have one these topics every couple weeks or so.

For some reason, I like the story better when it's a girl saving the galaxy for a change.
Also, the voice acting is fantastic.

I play femshep not just because I'm a female gamer but because I have trouble listening to Mark Meer while playing. I want to play John Shepard and see the difference but Mark Meer's voice acting makes me break into fits of giggles or I get completely appaled / horrified in certain scenes. He breaks my immersion into the world. John Shep is one good looking SOB but I have to mute him, and it sucks that I have to and I can't play the broshep becasue of it.

And a male antagonist is boring, to quote some.

Let's see:

Nikita.
Beatrix Kiddo in Kill bill.
Sigourny Weaver in Alien series.
Buffy.
Jennifer Garner in Alias.
Captain kathryn Janeway in Star trek.
Sara Connor  in terminator series.
Up coming movie Hunger games with Female lead kicking butt.
Hit-girl in Kick-butt (censor) movie.
Trinity in the Matrix series.
Selene in the Underworld movies.
Evelyn Salt in the movie Salt..
Jane Smith in Mr and Mrs Smith.
Lara Croft.
Alice in Resident evil movies.

The list goes on and on.

Sure it used to be the "typical male lead rambo", but this has changed considerably.

Three reasons:

1. Jennifer Hale is awesome.

2. I had to count the number of video games that have "heroic armored male military-type saves nation/world/galaxy" as the underlying premise, I'd keel over of exhaustion.

3. When I'm playing a male character, I consistently find myself making the decisions I would have made. A little bit of disconnection from the character is good, and it frees me to go "but what if Femshep did this..."

Tradition going back to the original Phantasy Star - female leads know how to save the galaxy.

* To experience a different VO.

* To seperate my characters; the other toon is a male Shepard, and I use the default appearance.

* To explore other dialogue options.

For me i have a standard female char i play all my games with, i get as close as i can to what i think she should look like in any game i play. MMO RPG etc, My wife just rolls her eyes and lets me get on with it, thos i am now rerolling and for first time in a while rolled as myself in a game to do a renegade run through of all 3 games, it proving refreashing after doing same probably a little to quick with my Ariel Shep as had lost my save games to a hd crash before xmas

This may be shocking to some, but... men prefer looking at women (generally speaking; no offense meant to homosexuals). Also, the player is NOT Shepard, and not everyone is trying to place themselves in Shepard's shoes.

I'm not going to judge the voice acting. Both styles are very different from each other, but I don't think either is better than the other. I would imagine most men would prefer to hear a woman talk though, which is partially the cause of the "Hale's a better voice actress" argument.

Everything looks better with boobs ;)

Seriously speaking, voice acting is a big one, and having the hero-who-saves-all be a woman isn't all that common. And i'm sick of the "damsel in distress" cliche, which, thankfully Mass Effect is free of, even without Shepard being female.

1. What the hell?
2. Maybe they do?
3. What the hell?

Also, Mark Meer annoys me so I play as femshep? Ever thought of that?

I've got to agree with Eain, here... (Except for the "Mark Meer annoys me" bit.)

Should we cross reference this with a list of male protagonists throughout television, film and literary history?

Also, "Lara Croft" isn't precisely a strong female rolemodel. Remember how her breasts used to get bigger with every sequel? She's more of a typical "female lead bimbo" rather than an actual character.

Agreed. Only in her next installment does she look like a confident person, before she was just a poorly rendered babe with guns. Nikita was an insecure crybaby in the original film. Sydney Bristow (ALIAS) was constantly being saved by her father, her surrogate father and her reluctant boyfriend throughout the series.

Because Jennifer Hale is so > Mark Meer. No other reasons required.

On an unrelated note, I tend to play as a female character in any game that provides any view or VO of player's character, since watching/listening to a female is generally much more pleasing (for me being a heterosexual male).
