Anyone that seriously think Mark Meer holds up compared to the rest of the cast --ANY member of the cast, don't know how acting works. Hell, there's a good chance you don't even know how speaking normally works.
Why do guys play as FemShep?

Add to that that Manshep is a Marty Stu for me (100% Paragon), whereas with Femshep, I take a different, more grey route. Not 100% Renegade, but more one of the kind of character I plotted for her, rather than what I would do myself in their position.
So, Manshep = me, an avatar of me, whereas Femshep is more separate, and her own individual.

Oh the horror, some people dare to prefer Meer over Hale.Alright-Television wrote...

Ahem, get over it?
Not to say both of them are without faults. For example some cringe worthy material from Meer in ME2 is:
"How are you doing Kelly!?"
From Hale? Every single time she says the word "Collectors". Godamn, she puts so much emphasis on that word it makes me cringe up into the fetal position. I just can't handle the over emphasis she puts into all of her dialogue, it's like a parody of an action hero.
To me she sounded just fine and as Bastila Shan, Mazzy Fentan or Jennifer Mui.
Here? Not so much. Not saying she isn't obviously good or experienced but I am just really wondering why does everyone get such a raging hard-on over her.

For my first run-throughs of ME 1 & 2, I always play as a renegade male Shep....then, after I'll make a paragon FemShep....
I do that in all RPG games.....I did it in DA:O, a male warrior, then a female mage....
same as Skyrim, Fallout 3/New Vegas....

my reasons, because its nice to see nice women kicking ass, the voice acting is better and also you play differently. your choices are different, you have to think in a different way at times.
i have a paragon femshep, because a woman can express her feelings so much better. and i have a evil femshep (who i tried to make her look like rayne from the bloodrayne games), who i can take her evil behaviour far more serious then that of a man.
but i do have a maleshep as well, who i tried to make him look as me and make choices my way. but i do prefere to play as femshep.

Its not wrong. It just seems stupid. If you are a guy, you can never truly relate to a female character.
And if your gay, why wont you play as a gay maleshep?
I bet in games like Dragon Age you are always playing a Human am I right ?
You are HUMAN, how can you trully relate to being a dwarf/elf/...

It just doesnt make sense for guys to play as femshep, unless you're sexually confused.
Ok, following your logic, to play other race than human in any game you must be ... racially confused or what ?
Your arguments are complete BS, sorry.

I don't know why these threads keep popping up for every game. Ultimately, it depends on how people view the game.
Males who play males tend to view the character as themselves and therefore choose the same gender.
Males who play females tend to view the character as a unique character in a story, and tend to choose the gender they find the most attractive.

It's fine to have preference but I've always thought *that* line of reasoning was kind of... weak.

... What? Women are still human you know.
I doubt I could relate to a Yahg, but women aren't so alien.
But my reasons:
- I think I can make better (and by "better" I mean human-looking) female characters in the ME cc.
- I prefer Hale's performance, although I haven't imported any of my male Sheps into ME3 yet.
- Since I can romance Liara either way, why the hell not? Even without her, I'd go for Garrus or Kaidan above the female romances.

I've looked over most walkthroughs on youtube, and pretty much all of them play as femshep.
My friends play as femshep too.....and its not even on their second playthrough.
Like....why? I don't get it....do they do that JUST for seeing some lesbian action? Jeez....
EDIT:
Some of you asked whats my take on this, and why do I think its wrong? Well.....
Its not wrong. It just seems stupid. If you are a guy, you can never truly relate to a female character.
And if your gay, why wont you play as a gay maleshep?
It just doesnt make sense for guys to play as femshep, unless you're sexually confused.
EDIT 2:
Okay, just to be clear.....ME gives you a chance to step into a virtual world, and do stuff you never could do right? Given that chance, that opportunity to save the galaxy and stuff, forge relationships in game, why would you choose to be represented as a female? The voice acting or whatever your reason is....you're still playing as femshep. I can understand that only if you consider yourself female.
And this is probably the stupidest thing I've read so far - some folks have said they don't play as a male shep because they rather stare at femshep's ass during the game.....wow.....I...don't know what to say. Are you serious? but You ARE femshep! She is you! would you get off looking at your own ass? A game is not like seeing a movie folks....you're actually playing as yourself.
I'm NOT talking to the people who play as femshep in their later playthroughs....this is for the folks who exclusively play as femshep. And I just don't get that. Maybe this discussion is pointless...
Yes. It's pointless and flamebaity
But:
* I cannot stand Meer's voice acting. He sounds bored, listless, and half asleep. It's always among the worst voice acting in any of the games. I even find the Diana Allers character better done
* Guy Marines are the convention. It's an honest-to-God great change of pace to have Femshep.
* Lesbianism has nothing to do with it (for me.)
* Quote: Okay, just to be clear.....ME gives you a chance to step into a virtual world, and do stuff you never could do right?
Yes. Like be represented to as a female.
Quote: some folks have said they don't play as a male shep because they rather stare at femshep's ass during the game.....wow.....I...don't know what to say. Are you serious? but You ARE femshep! She is you! would you get off looking at your own ass?
Except that well, I don't know how to explain this to you, but, except that I'm NOT Shep. I know it's a game. You get that, right? That people can relate to, yet divorce themselves from their avatar simultaneously.
And, yes, If I were hot, I might get off looking at my own ass.

So with your reasoning OP you could not ever play as an alien, elf, dwarf, minotaur, zerg, protoss,or anything other than human male. Can you play an elderly man or is that a stretch too?

For me, it instantly helped distinguish MASS EFFECT from other sci-fi/action games on the Xbox. Since then, I've come to really love Jennifer Hale's voice over work for Shepard more than Meer.
Now, I just have fallen into the habit that FemShep is cannon.
