I also think FemSheps voice is better, but that's just how I see it. I also like the romances, like Garrus ofcourse.

True reason is simply because I can!!
Though My male always tend to be a renegade and female tends to be paragon hmm maybe my mind believes out of the two sexes females hold a higher morale ground than us males hmmm

Better voice acting, no doubt about it. Planning to play through the entire series as a goodietwoshoes maleshep though after I have finished ME3 with my femShep.
Yeah, I'm replaying as MaleShep from ME1 (finsihed ME1 in the last week and now onto ME2) because even though I played ME1 and ME2 through multiple times, when ME3 was released the only save game I had was from a play through of ME1 and ME2 as FemShep.

I've looked over most walkthroughs on youtube, and pretty much all of them play as femshep.
My friends play as femshep too.....and its not even on their second playthrough.
Like....why? I don't get it....do they do that JUST for seeing some lesbian action? Jeez....
EDIT:
Some of you asked whats my take on this, and why do I think its wrong? Well.....
Its not wrong. Its just stupid. If you are a guy, you can never truly relate to a female character.
And if your gay, why wont you play as a gay maleshep?
It just doesnt make sense for guys to play as femshep, unless you're sexually confused.
Why oh why do you ever see any movies where females are the protagonist?
I mean HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU EVER GONNA RELATE TO HER?
I mean, it's not like as if women are people now is it? <_<
Big difference, you don't control a TV actor, nor do you make ANY choices in a TV show or movie.
Pretty poor analogy right there.
Gimme a better one, big brains. I've never seen the real issue with it, rather than be annoyed by all the insecure brats who go all like "Wait what you play, like, with a girl character, OMG OMG OMG **** **** ****!!!". Now that's a problem. I hate annoying brats.

Sometimes it's also how the dialogue is edited together. For example:
In that very start of the game, Shepard tells Anderson that the Defense committee is a waste of time. Meer's deliverance is very slow and deliberate and actually gets cut off by Anderson's interjection, as if to calm Shepard down from being angry. With Hale's deliverance, again it's impactful but this time, Anderson "waits" for her to finish and then responds to her comment.
Both have great deliverance of the line, but the context of the deliverance is where the main difference goes between the voice acting. For me, Hale's work on Mass Effect 1 was superior to that of Meer's. However, for Mass Effect 2, I think Meer's was a much better "performance." I am completing a second playthrough with my femshep so I will hold judgement till then.
AS FAR AS THE OP QUESTION: everyone has their own reasons, but I think the main factor is that there are very few "female heroes" that are given this kind of role. Some people want to experience that.

That's a new one to me. However, if someone called me a perv for doing such an innocuous thing, I'd simply scrap him from my book (has to be a guy to be so frakkin macho sensitive). I have little space in my life for sheer stupidity.
I don't want this label applied to me so I don't do it. Mostly I play as a male for immersion, since I'm a male myself.
Well good for you.

Saying someone's choice of playing an opposite gender character is stupid, in a game about choices, is rather rude and immature and is no way conducive to conversation.
The fact that the OP can't form an argument beyond "stupid," while attempting to persuade us that only homogeneous relationships between digital avatars and players are correct is telling of his maturity.
People can relate to others through more than their gender.
We all appreciate and relate to the game in our own way, please stop trolling others with comments like "stupid" and attempts at pigeonholing the playerbase into such a limited way of thinking.
You asked questions. Please be polite and respectful as we have been.
Why I play femshep?
Because of voice acting and a strong female lead character.
You seem to have no idea what Role Playing means.

Please enligthen us, Oh Wise One.
You can role play as a soldier, as a vanguard, as a commander of a starship. I'm neither of those in real life, and that's ok.
It's when you can role play as a woman, something I'm also not in real life that there's a problem in "what role playing means".
The hidden argument that these ... ahhh.. people never have the guts to really say out loud is that it makes their virility "nervous". Well I couldn't care less about your sense of virility being offended, young man. Mine is fine and pleased everyday and I can well pass by without any snark comments from the likes of you.
Are we clear?

It really speaks volumes. Some people really do treat Mass Effect like a dating sim with guns, and infer a lot about another player's choices from that. Pretty wild.

Are you insecure that it is possible to play the game, and complete it, as a woman? Bioware, and to some extent Bethesda, sees the trending. Men were traditionally the majority of gamers but there is a very specific reason for that. It's not because women are any less interested in technology or fantasy, it's because there were no roles we could see ourselves in... until recently.
What I think is incredibly sexy is how males have now embraced the roles that were added and they are secure enough in themselves as men to play in those roles and see things through our eyes. We are stepping further toward really understanding each other. Technology lets us be anyone, go anywhere, do anything. Don't question it - just enjoy the ride. And if you don't like it, well you have the option to play as manshep. That's why it's called "choice".

People seem to think that men who play as FemShep are perverts. Which makes little sense because Shepard isn't sexualized at all. In fact, that's one of the reasons I like playing as her. It's refreshing to see a video game where the female protagonist's naughty bits aren't shoved in your face every five seconds.

I personally have only played FemShep once and that was in the Demo as far as I could tell they were both great in there own way but I have always played a Male character in RPG's and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon.

Its mostly for the immersion part. I really wish people were a little more mature about the perversion thing. A lot of Male and Female gamers dislike it when Men plays as Women and Women play as Men. Its sad to say but its true. I enjoyed many games with female protagonists, in games where I'm given a choice I always play male because I like realistic roleplaying. Since I'm a male, its easier to get inside the character's head.

Also, hale is a great voic actor, it's beauty to my ear.
And again, it's a game. Who cares if i play man or a woman? Why does this bother you?
EDIT:
And why I play femshep? The story is so much better with a woman. I've seen enough men in action movies and it's nice to finaly see something fresh.
