got it a coupla days ago, to prep for when I can pick up ME3. gotta say overall I like it. completed Horizon last night and so far it's a pretty decent story. some reservation I do have, tho, are not being able to carry on a romace with Ashley, which the devs should've allowed for considering all that she and Emily, my femShep and don't even go there:P, had beeen thru together. another thing is the Citadel and Presidium, and only being limited to a few levels instead of a massive station? yeah I get that there was a lotta damage done, but surely they could've added other places to go. another thing, is the control setup. why couldn't the same key binds have been used in ME2? as it is now, it seems a bit quirky to me. last thing, atleast for now, is why load screens? I really miss entering an elevator and actually taking it to wherever, and there there's disembarking from Normandy by entering the airlock and having the ship computer announce my departure. but yeah, taken as a whole 1&2 together make up the best game I've ever played. hopefully 3 won't be a disappointment despite what I'd heard of the ending

A lot of people moaned about the elevators in ME1. Apparently they'd rather sit and passively watch a loading screen that takes the same amount of time as an elevator journey, but doesn't have the character interaction on the way. I liked the Mako too. Actually landing on the planet surface gave a better sense of space exploration than planet scanning (which has to be one of the most tedious ideas in the history of video games), but the Mako was cut because, again, people complained that all the planets were similar (I liked the arwork of the different sky boxes).

Game developers are developing an annoying habit of listening to the 'fans' who shout the loudest, instead of sticking to what they feel is right. Hence the continual streamlining of franchises that were selling OK in the first place. Making a game more 'accessible' may attract a new audience, but it alienates another which likes complexity and subtlety. If you have a vision, "build it, and they will come". If you don't have a vision no amount of focus groups will help.

Regarding the controls - yeah, I kept hitting the spacebar for the squad menu to start with. You get accustomed to it in time.

yeah, you can add the MAKO to the "I miss it" list. took a bit too to figure out landing after scanning/probing a planet, and the wiki was of no help.

what I don't understand is why the "loudest" would be listened to any more than those who've played and actually "knows" what works for ME1. like they know anything about developing games? however, not all devs know what's right, but in the case of ME1 bioware/demiurge did one helluva job.

the accessability you referr to I believe is for those children who play with toys, ie; consoles: the lowest common denominator. as for "focus" groups, they're little more that critics who failed at whatever it is they're criticizing. I'm getting used to the controls, but they still don't seem as intuitive as ME1 on my ideazon FANG

I liked the Mako but felt it was overused and didn't like the amount of driving you had to do. Seemed like I was expected to spend almost as much time crawling over every inch of the map in the Mako as running around on foot fighting and doing RPG stuff. Every planet you can land on? Sorry, felt like a blatant bit of game padding to me, especially as you could often have been put down a hell of a lot closer to one of the objectives. I think ME2 got the amount of driving right with the Hammerhead DLC stuff, but it's just a shame I found the Hammerhead much less enjoyable than the Mako. My ideal would have been Mako driving in Hammerhead quantites.

Elevators vs load screens. Don't care, hate 'em both. Knowing why we have to have them doesn't mean I have to like either of them. I wish it came up with a message that said 'Go get a beer or a cup of coffee or something' and gave a countdown to let you know how long until the next bit was loaded and the game could restart. On very fast machines that's probably not going to be very long, but then on very fast machines the ME1 elevator rides seem to take as long as on slow ones.
