I'm looking to start my first Insanity run and I'm looking for some advice on how to best build my Engineer.

What builds do you use?
What bonus power would you recommend? I was thinking Energy Drain to replace Overload.

Thanks.

I have some recommendations based solely on how much fun and success I'm having with my own Insanity Engineer playthrough.

Don't replace Overload with Energy Drain. Overload is superior in almost every way this time around, aside from regaining shields, but you can take Defense Matrix for that, which increases your durability AND Tech power damage when activated if spec'd right, AND restores the majority of your shields at the touch of a button with a very short cooldown. Best power for Engineer, hands down. Anything else is just redundant.

I personally went the 1 man army route and spec'd myself for Drone Mastery, Combat Drone for damage and shields and rockets, Sentry Turret for damage and shields and flamethrower, and Sabotage for hacking boosts.

If you go the powers route (or mix and match), Overload can be upgraded to one of the best CC powers in the game with the chain evolutions and can affect synthetics and organics alike with the neural shock upgrade, as well as set up tech bursts which shock and stun anyone caught in their radius. Cryo blast also sets up its own explosions that freeze enemies caught in the blast, and synergies very well with the flame turret. Incinerate is incinerate.

I recommend focusing on positioning your turrets and drones (and hacks when available) to help you flank with a good close/mid range gun like the Wraith or Talon. Defense Matrix + drones and turrets to distract = lots of survivability. And SO much fun.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give the drone mastery a try.

I don't seem to have Defense Matrix, i'll go for Defense Drone for now. Respec it when I find it later.

are you replaying it? if so, i'd recommend armor or warp ammo as bonus. defense drone didn't really help me that much.

also go with flame thrower on your turrent, great for crwod control.

Defense Drone is another great choice. You're effectively doubling your squad size right there (and can triple it if you take Tali and EDI with you). Pure chaos lol.

Oh and you might have missed your chance to grab Matrix; I got it by talking to EDI in the Normandy's cockpit after the whole Cerberus Citadel fiasco. Speaking of EDI's bonus powers, Decoy of course makes a good choice for an Engineer too, especially one who focuses on the aforementioned style of distracting and flanking. All those powers add some sort of survivability to the class; just depends what package you want it to come in.

PS for bragging rights, the Engineer one is def the coolest looking of the class t-shirts in the Bioware store lol.

I think many of these suggestions are missing the point of the Engineer - other than the Adept, you are the most proficient at spamming powers for great damage and tech combos.  The Engineer has skills/combos to take care of any enemy thrown at you, unlike other classes that have at least one weakness:

Shields/Barriers:Overload
Armor/Standard Health Bar:Cryo>Incinerate

On top of that the drone/turret skills are far more useful in this game, keeping any enemy off of you and, in many cases, taking care of enemies (even on Insanity) by themselves while you frolick around looking for loot.

Taking any bonus power that:
-Increases your recharge time, even a seemingly measly 10% (e.g. Marksman, Defense Matrix)
-Increases Weapon Damage (shooting is a waste for almost any battle, and any enemy tough enough to last long enough to get a barrage from you or your squadmates, utilizing your ammo power, is dangerous enough it's better for your squad mates to stay out of harms way - I generally direct them as far from the battle as I can - their powers are projected through Shepard as a proxy)
-Sacrifices offensive power for survivability (again, as an Engineer you should only pop out of cover to release a power)
-Adds another offensive power with diminishing returns (e.g. Energy Drain., Carnage) or requires another biotic power to utilize combos - worthless unless you have a squad mate with a corresponding power (and, once again, just wastes time between your powerful tech combos)

... isn't worth the points or the time during combat.

That leaves you with Inferno Grenade & Defense Drone.  Defense drone is neat, makes you feel like you have your own little army, especially if you have Tali hanging along (I even took EDI out with Decoy for a while, giving us NINE "squad members").  Defense Drone has limited use, however, as, even on Insanity, if you play Engineer properly no enemy will get close enough for it to be any use.

So... Inferno Grenade.  Great AOE DOT [Area Of Effect, Damage Over Time) power that doesn't actually have a recharge time (unlike Proximity Mine - if that power worked like a grenade I might go for it, the range is unlimited), so it doesn't slow down the usage of your core powers - in fact you can use during your recharge time.  Perfect for groups of weak enemies or for tough ones, even in close quarters.

On a somewhat related note, I recommend NOT putting points into squad mates' powers you don't want them using (e.g. Fortification, Defense Matrix) if your game options allow them to do anything independently; their cooldown times are already bad, you don't want to have them even slower using a skill that shouldn't matter as long as they are in cover, or an offensive power that isn't as effective as the ones that compliment you.

P.S. - be sure to limit yourself to weapons that keep your recharge at +200%; you very rarely shoot as it is, so ammo is never an issue, nor is damage. A couple of the Sniper Rifles upgraded to lvl 5+ work, they do give you the option to precision place powers using the scope and, using the correct mods, the ability to see through smoke and make "mail slot" kills with time dilation. Otherwise use a light rifle, SMG, or pistol, preferably with a scope.

If you MUST have a shotgun, there is at least one that will give you the max recharge time - the Asari variant doesn't even have to be upgraded.

@charlesfro

Except that I find my success and enjoyment on Insanity without spamming power combos AND in close quarters. So while it's great to point out the potential of a power-heavy Engineer, which I did, it's kind of obnoxious AND misinformed to act like it's the only "point" of an Engineer to stay away from enemies and spam powers.

The point of an Engineer is battlefield control, and it can be achieved through combining powers or through increasing the effective number of your "squadmates" on the field (or any combination of the two). So I'd agree that a cowardly Engineer who sits back far away from enemies and relies primarily on Incinerate, Cryo Blast and Overload to whittle away at defenses and health is an effective method of tackling Insanity, but please allow me to provide first-hand experience that an Engineer can very easily wield a shotgun into battle and rely primarily on the tactical positioning of drones, turrets and hacks to hold the line and effectively move it right up the enemy's ass.

And Defense Matrix is the perfect bonus power for that style of Engineer. Especially considering casting times remain under 3 seconds even with it active, and survivability is really all that any Engineer who doesn't hide in the back of his battles could use a little more of.
