PhysX software on an ATI system? Baroo?

Just reinstalled ME2 on a new computer (old system developed a serious MOBO fault, got an ASUS gaming rig from a friend who was upgrading his system), and when I attempt to launch, I get the following message:

"Failed to initialize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX System Software installed."

Isn't PhysX an Nvidia thing? Why would ME2 be looking for Nvidia software on a Radeon 5800? Any suggestions for how to correct this problem?

1. What did you learn from the forum Archives?

2. What did the EA people on EA Help's Chatline tell you?

What I learned is that I am running an ATI system, and that PhysX runs on NVIDIA systems (won't even LOAD on an ATI system).

To add insult to injury, ME and ME3 load and run just fine. Only ME2 fails with that error.

Actually, if you are still deluded in that manner, you've learned nothing so far.

If you install ME3, it uses a different PhysX version that ME2 can't use.

Try uninstalling the current version and getting the newest from here.

If that doesn't work, search the ME2 installation directory for a PhysX installer and see if there is one there.

I'm having the same problem.

I tried installing the latest version. That didn't seem to work. If I roll back to the version that came with ME2, then ME3 doesn't work.

So does this basically mean it's only one or the other at a time? Grrrr...

That does appear to be what has happened. It may even affect DA:O.

For those interested, and for the convenience of others searching for a solution, below are the ME2 and ME3 PhysX installers.

Thank you, L551.

Your response was helpful, useful, generous, and not full of arrogance and sarcasm, unlike another poster in this thread. Said other poster could learn a thing or two about responding to questions from you.

This looks to be the case. And as someone else pointed out, it seems we can play ME2 OR ME3, but will have to change PhysX installations every time we switch between games. Your information on where to find the requisite versions is very, very helpful. Thank you.

I like to think they're playing the part of the avatar they're using.

Just an FYI, I can play either game, ME2 or ME3 without switching Physix versions. I am currently running twin hd6950s so I know it isn't Nvidea cards only. There is something else going on, that is causing an issue above and beyond just installing ME3.

I'm not sure what exactly is causing the issue. Maybe Bioware does, but they don't care about ME2 anymore.

For the record, I can run both ME2 and ME3 without switching PhysX versions. AMD 5850.

OK, definitely sounds like there's something more than just PhysX involved here. I'm on an ASUS G73jh, which uses Radeon HD 5800 for its graphics.

I wonder... Interactive Civilian, are you on a laptop, too? My system is designed for gaming, but it IS still a laptop, which could mean there's something different in it that makes it respond differently than a desktop would.

Funny, though, that ME runs just fine, and if I switch which version of PhysX is installed, both ME2 and ME3 run fine. They just won't run on the same version of PhysX.

And now I ran into the same problem. Installed ME3, it couldn't import the face code, so I wanted to run ME2 to scribble it down manually since I can get it there, ME2 doesn't work. Ugh.

Downloading that older PhysX installer thing, I'll have to see how does that work out.
Still, ugh.
