I never said it was perfect. But the simple fact that it was originally a stock photo should have no bearing on how you feel about the picture in the game. If no one ever learned where the photo came from there would be a lot less complaining going on. I bet if people knew where a lot of the stuff came from in their favorite games they feel like the developer was being lazy. I was trying to point out that just because Bioware settled on a stock photo doesn't mean they didn't explore a lot of other options.
Yes, they could have spent more time altering the photo... but I'm just not the type of person who scoffs at every little detail. At a glance, the photo looks nice and it fits the character well. I completely understand why people are upset that some of the details are off, and I wouldn't mind if Bioware patched in a nicer edit of the photo... but I simply don't think it's as big of a deal as a lot of people here.
Overall I think you may have the right of it; however I do have a few nits to pick.
I do think the origin remaining a mystery would reduce the complaints, but I don't think it would reduce them very significantly. The origin only adds gas to the fire.
At a glance the photo does look nice, but lots of people (myself included) gave it far more than a glance. Fan artists certainly gave it a very critical once over so they could accurately draw Tali and other quarians. I don't think Bioware should have stopped with something that looks good at a glance.
I partially disagree that the face fits the character. She strikes me as more cute than gorgeous... and the picture is of a very pretty model. She isn't cute. She's smoking! That being said, just because she is beautiful doesn't mean she can't be cute. This is why I am still okay with the overall look.
I think Bioware would have done a lot to quell complaints if they gave her a full face rendering. Then used that render for that picture. Then used her face render in the romance scene. It is more work, but it fits the context they have established in ME2 and 3.
Pictures of Liara/Ashley/Kaiden in ME2 were made using in-game renders. The photoshop breaks from this. If they had rendered her face instead of photoshopped it there would still be complaints about her being "too human" but I don't think it would spawn nearly as many threads.
