Never been a big Tali fan but I find myself dissapointed too. I always expected them to be more alien looking, whats the point in the big mystery if they're basicly human? I love Mass Effect races, but Bioware seems to lack imagination here, so I'm gonna rant a bit.
The reason why most established sci-fi series have very humanoid races is because they're old, and they got budget limits. In Mass Effect they didn't take this route expect for maybe Asari. It takes same amount of work to model non-human races, I'd say its bit more sketchy with humans themselves because they didn't bother adding diversity to the non-human races. That kinda bothers me. Turian females anyone? Yeah hard to imagine them any different so don't bother putting the in the games! Leave some comic artist to pull some half assed version of them.
Salarian females? Like male salarians but always hooded! Well thats kinda believeable given their insectoid background.
Krogan females? Same build, but hide the face so we can slack off!
Asari? Blue females with tentacle hair, sex appeal race here.
Now then, back to quarians. All they had to do to add more diversity to the excisting organic races was to establish Tali as more alien, but still appealing to your basic human. Why? Because you don't have to show any other quarians unmasked! That DOES NOT mean you make them look like almost exactly human expect for the fingers and feet.
Damn it, I refuse to believe every advanced life form is either human looking or that the genders lookvery similar, that just doesn't seem believeable. But that is understandable for older sci-fi with racially "diverse" galaxies. But for a game? Use your imagination Bioware! Oh well too late for that now, and I do love the races, but at the same time the oppoturnities wasted with them nag me.
