I agree as do many people on this forum and on Megacritic.  The ratings of ME3 are tanking primarily due to the horribly written ending.   If Bioware wanted to see if a 10 min cinematic could ruin 100+ hours of story, they succeeded.

I give it a 9. I give it a 9.95. www.youtube.com/watch
Give it an actual ending, I'll give it a 10.

While I'm here, I'll add my 2 cents that I disagree with tanking the reviews just to prove a point. I'm passionate about the ending too but the game, for the most of it, deserves my respect.

8/10

Pros - Gameplay, graphics, some of the best level artwork I've seen in any game till date, voice-acting, length, sound, music

Cons - The ending (or lack thereof), broken side quest system

Despite the odd ending, ME3 is still one of the best games I've played in a long while.

9/10. Aside from the ending, the game delivered exactly what I wanted: an emotional rollercoaster ride if ever there was one.

Overall I'll give it a 5 based on several things.
Poor to terrible:
MP being required.
Console graphics on PC.
Terrible plot hole filled ending.
Tali stock photo.
Quest journal was horrible.
Side quests were scan and read.
Fully half the LI characters were removed.
Clumsy at best, same sex romance options.
Day 1 DLC that was on the disk.
Import issues.

Starting at 10/10. -5 points for ending, -1 point for hack Tali reveal, -1 points for lack of seeing war assets in final battle.

Sorry Bdub, 3/10. Fix those three and you get a perfect score.

7/10 overall

What caused my ratings

Bad
- journal system and quest bugs. No way to really track progress unless I pen and paper it. The previous two games tracked progress, why take a step backwards
- some of the animations are bad. particularly storming maybe its the unreal engine i don't know but the previous two games the storm animation was much better.
- No Mako or Hovertank. Considering we are at war I am surprised there were not a couple of missions to use these vehicles to fight with. Could have been a good alternate to MP.
- ending. This broke it for me. I found it that bad. not enough to destroy the series but enough to hold off on doing another play through of ME3. I bought into the series for the choices. to shape the outcome of Shepard. Not to make choices then have them taken away at the end.

Good
The story was massive up till the storming of the beam lol.
seeing all my characters from the previous games.
Getting choked up over Mordin and Thane T-T
Seeing Liara :D
weapon mods
watching EDI evolve. I thought it was pretty cool to watch EDI become more human in the thought process.

I'm glad most of you don't have a job as a reviewer.

Writing off a game because of a ending? Really?

There are a lot of factors that count towards a review, not just how the game ends.

Before the ending it's a 10. With the ending... eh... 8. I mean, the ending is terrible, but I can't, objectively speaking, dock it more than that.

7.5/10 - (ending putts it down, but so does the quest journal and various other bits i dont dwell on now).

Frakking loved everything up untill the end, and i try not to forget that. But that ending overshadows way to much about everything the ME franchise stood for. 9/10 had it come with solid conclusion.

8.7/10, definitely. I refuse to join this 'trash the entire game because the ending sucked' bandwagon. I find it ridiculous to rate the game only for its ending (even though I didn't really mind it). Mass Effect 3 is the best of the entire ME series for me.

This.

This

This

Pretty much this.

I can't see how you people can be serious about that. The ending does not suddenly remove the rest of the game. It seriously affects replayability, but it does not warrant a difference of 9 in a review score, in my opinion at least.

It was a 9.5/10 for me until the end.

Some bugs, lazy animators not using right guns, only 3 truely excellent romances (liara, garrus, tali), effective strength affected by MP, and imbalanced difficulty curve.

Ending dropped it straight down to a 7/10. Killed off all my good will.

Up till the ending: 9/10
From the ending and on: 0.5/10 (indoctrination theory considered)

I understand the common belief is that in epics like these the hero has to die, but the phrase 'the hero has to' anything in a game like Mass Effect that's built around choice and you pickin' your own destiny, it goes against everything that Mass Effect is all about.

 9.5/10

Honestly my only complaint aside from the ending is graphical bugs.  People disappearing in the middle of a conversation or the camera pointing in the wrong direction makes for some groan-worthy moments.  Fix the bugs and add a proper ending (yes I'm a believer in the indoctrination theory) and honestly Mass Effect 3 is exactly what I want out of a video game; the complete package.  Shame that it came so damn close to Bioware's masterpiece.

And, really, people who are claiming that the ending dropped your rating of the game down multiple points...what the hell?  Yes, it's disappointing, but how can you allow 10 minutes of nonsensical exposition ruin 20-30 hours of something you seriously enjoyed?  Not to mention the other 40-odd hours of preceeding games.  A bad or weird ending can't ruin an entire series for me; it might tarnish it, but it doesn't make me any less able to go back and enjoy the parts I enjoyed again, or maintain the great memories I had of it.  I don't suddenly hate the first season of Lost after the bizarre and head-scratching finale in season six.

I guess it's your loss.  I don't think less of ME1, 2 or even the first 32 hours I spent in 3 because of a 10 minute acid trip at the end of the game.  I play for the journey, not the destination, and while I know that sounds cliche, it's just the truth, and I can stomach an incomplete or bad ending and move on without throwing my hands in the air and proclaiming the death of a series I had cherished 15 minutes earlier.

With a good ending: 9/10. With the current ending: 2/10. It's really that bad - I couldn't possibly play the game now without the knowledge of what's coming overshadowing it. I'm going to replay ME1 to try to erase the memory, but even that will be a struggle knowing what happens two games down the line.

Having said that 9/10, the bugginess of the game (having to manually copy files from disk when it tried to download from Origin, having to manually generate/import a face, constant crashing) was a big downside - and I have a pretty decent rig.

People used to love OJ Simpson.  Look how that ended.

One bad thing can undo everything.

Entire game before landing on Earth: Some bugs and errors, nothing that didn't fix upon reload, but having to reload takes you out of the experience. The quest interface could should have included an update feature. And the import from files that were played across all three games should have been tested and fixed before shipping. The story was excellent. Saying that the story was emotionally engaging is an understatement. The game-play and story integrate better than they ever have before and great care has been taken to make interactions feel more fluid and natural. Sometimes they go a little too far: there were moments I would have liked to feel like I had more control over the conversation, but the experience did feel more natural overall. 9.8/10

From Earth until Anderson's death: The last mission was surprisingly linear for a game that was supposed to reflect your choices as part of the end-game. However, it was emotional and satisfying on that level. If the game had ended here, I wouldn't have been upset. The goodbyes to all of the characters was a real tear-jerker. 8.5/10

From the elevator ride up to the epilogue: Enough has been said about this part so that everyone will understand this number without context. 3/10

Consolidating those scores (which I tried to be as fair as possible about) I came up with this method: The body of the game is weighted to 70%, the Earth section to 10% (it's relatively shorter), and the ending to 20% (it's the shortest, but endings carry extra weight because it's what we experience last):

FINAL SCORE: 8.3

If they fix that ending though....space magic will change that score.

8.5/10 before the ending, It would take very little effort and changes to get the game into the 9's, and most of those changes would be bug fixes and quality of life changes.

0/10 for the ending itself, I would say it required no effort or thought, but that would be wrong, I actually think to make an ending this badly you would have to intentionally want to screw people over.

4/10 in total, yes, the ending is so terrible it cuts the quality of the game more then in half for me.
