I've finished a couple major quests (mage's tower, Brecilian forrest) and the DLC (stone prisoner, Warden's Keep) but I haven't run into the Starfang random encounter where I can get the ore to make Starfang.

I've probably traveled around the map more than a dozen times, doing random side quests.  I've also had more than a dozen random encounters without getting the Starfang one.

Any advice?  This is driving me crazy.  Is there anything I can do induce the Starfang random encounter.  Alternatively, has anyone with the DLC ever completed the game without getting the random encounter?

It's completely random. On my first playthrough I got it right before Landsmeet. On my second playthrough it was literally the first Random Encounter I got.

have you stone prisoner dlc? if so i got it in all play through by talking to the black smith then going to get shale and immediately going back to keep it works for me 4 times you don't have to do shale quest just go to where he is and go back to keep. first go unlock shales quest then go to the area and do what i said it works.

As far as I know, there's only a limited number of random encounters. As others have said, it's completely random to get the Superman encounter so all you can do is travel back an forth between two destinations and hope you get the right one.

I have heard that travelling from Soldier's Peak to Honnleath has a higher-than-average rate of triggering the encounter. Not sure if that is true, but that also happens to be where it happened to me. Be prepared to get jumped by Old Tegrin almost every trip, though... and good luck!

If all else fails, just console cheat the meteor into your inventory.

There is a bug AFAIK that when running a module that is enabled in the Downloadable Content menu (not any of the pre-order stuffs), the starfang encounter will not be triggered. I noticed this in one of my games.

I had the same problem, its ment to be random but I think there is some bug that means it can get missed cause I must have had every random encounter and then I started getting hounded by that dwarf merchant every time. In the end I had to restart.

You need to finish Wardens Keep first. So you can't re enter the keep.

Both times I've played through the game I've gotten the "superman" scene almost directly after I went from Wardens Keep.

You don't even need to set foot in Soldier's Peak.  I just force it by running between Denerim and Flemeth's hut for a couple of minutes early on in every game.

My warrior and my mage both got it in the first 20 minutes out of Ostagar. My rogue, sadly, never got it, no matter how much I just ran around the map hopelessly.

not true on my mage i got it before i even went to the keep you can get it anytime

as someone else said if you have mods installed it could prevent the event to happend, on my first rogue i had stuff installed and never got it to trigger , on the next playtrough after some hours of play i decided to turn off my add ons (non DLC) and i got it to trigger and i switched them on after

Zero mods installed.

I have the Stuff with the DDE

CC ring

DA journeys items(2/3 of them)

And have yet to see the encounter once on any of several playthroughs...

Might be just a really low chance of spawn.

But yea...outside mods break this game to bits.

I'm playing a rogue, and I've been having the same issues. PS-trip version and it just refuses to trigger. Frustrating.

Well if you think that's annoying, try getting up to the landsmeet, and having the well endowed/enchanted "Starfang" just Effin' disappear out of your inventory!!!!!(RIGHT OFF MY FREAKIN" BACK!!!!!)
GD POS SOFTWARE!!!

I just knew if EA got involved with Bioware, that crap like this would inevitably occur.

EA you know exactly where you can shove your influence, RIGHT?????!!!!!

I'm the OP. I've had about a dozen more random encounters and still no Starfang. I think I've exhausted all the random encounters so they've started just giving me the merchant.

I'm playing rogue, btw, with no mods installed.

Is it just that rogues can't get Starfang???

The xml seems to say it has a really low chance (seems to be 2%? not sure) of occurring.

Also has a LOTR ring of power event there, wonder what that is hrm.

Which XML controls random encounter chances?

I haven't found the one actually controlling it but DA/tools/source/2DA/random_encounters.xml at least indicates that it's random and a fairly low chance of occurring.

I really wanna know what that LOTR entry is about :D seems to have been cut :(

ETA: is there a way to view .gda files that is less awful than in the toolset!

Ok so after boring digging around in unreadable .gda files!

There seem to be different random encounter sets for different terrains: highway, forest, plains, mountains (and underground and denerim). The Superman encounter is only in the plains and mountains sections. I guess this is why people say go to Honnleath. There still seems to be a LOTR encounter, it's plains only. Then theres the axe in the tree one, which is unsurprisingly forest only.

Oh and the "chance" (I think) int for superman in mountains seems to be 0. Might be bugged.

I hadn't gotten it for two playthroughs, so I thought I was bugged What I decided to do was walk around the map until I got it. It took a while of just going from place to place and draining the random encounter queue, but I got it eventually. Once you start getting the merchant over and over, you are getting close. :)
