Have you talked to the weaponsmith at soldiers peak I found I had to talk to him first before the random encounter appeared.

Now in my 2nd playthrough I didn't get the random encounter before I had talked to the smith, but in my first I found the star metal ore WAY before I got to that merchant.

Just wanted to get something clear. Are you looking for the sword itself in the random encounter?FatLeprechaun7 wrote...
I'm the OP. I've had about a dozen more random encounters and still no Starfang. I think I've exhausted all the random encounters so they've started just giving me the merchant.
I'm playing rogue, btw, with no mods installed.
Is it just that rogues can't get Starfang???
Because you won't get it that way, you get the starmetal ore which you take back to WK to get Mikhael to make Starfang.
I'm asking because the way your post was worded, it seemed you thought you got the sword itself in that encounter.

I never got the encounter on my first play-through. Went back and loaded up the last save game you get after completing the game. It took about 22 trips between Honnleath and Soldier's Peak but it did, eventually occur. I also turned off a DLC I got from PC Gamer.
Nice sword though, I am glad I could still get it post-game for future DLC.

I didn't get it till 50 hours in if that tells you anything. You definitely need to do the Peak quest first.

Took me a lot more than a dozen travels to get it. I just sat there for a while going between many different locations until I got the event. Just keep trying.FatLeprechaun7 wrote...
I've probably traveled around the map more than a dozen times, doing random side quests. I've also had more than a dozen random encounters without getting the Starfang one.
Any advice?

My first two play-throughs I never saw it. The third time I got it when traveling from Sulcher's Pass to Honnleath right after Ostagar (and before doing anything for Soldier's Peak besides talking to Dryden). Seems to just be a really low chance of occurring, possibly combined with only showing up when traveling to certain locations.
Matthew Young CT: I think I've gotten the LOTR random encounter once, though I don't remember where I was traveling. I came upon 2 dead male elves and some darkspawn, and one of the elves had a note saying "Why didn't we take the eagles?" or something to that effect.

No you dont have to do anything in peak for this random encounter to occur, i have found meteor on my first travel from Lothering to Redcliff, i also have beaten the game without ever seen the meteor on my 2h warrior, i could have probably forced it to come but i gave up after going 5 times around the country and just wantet to go and slay the archdemon.

As said, it's completely random and it could take you 50 travels to get it. Since the chance of getting a random encounter does not seem to be related to the distance traveled but rather a flat 50% or so whenever you travel, the easiest way is to travel back and forth between the two closest locations. I used Honnoleath and Redcliffe, and after about 20 minutes of going back and forth I eventually got it. I believe most random encounters are one-time only, too, which would mean that you'll have a greater chance of running into this one if you've already done the various unique ones such as the chantry messenger or the adventurer party.
