That said, she murdered Meer at the end of Mass Effect 3. He sounded tired. She sounded on the verge of death. Absolutely stunning performance from her there.

Brandon Keener would have been an awesome male-shep. Part of the reason why I love Garrus so much is because of him. Compare Keener or Sheen to Meer. Would Joker have been nearly as wise-ass without Seth Green? Since this is a video game, emotion primarily needs to expressed through voice. Otherwise, they come across as Elcor - lol.
Keener's voice acting is definitely one of the reasons Garrus is so popular. Could you even imagine him sounding any other way?

I would have to agree wholeheartedly

I don't get when people say Femshep's voice is too "tough" or what have you. She's a soldier. What should she sound like?
I like Jennifer Hale better. She's very consistent in her deliveries and they always fit how you choose to respond. There's a clear distinction between a paragon and a renegade response with her. And she always sounds like she's in the scene. Mark Meer just sounds like he's doing a voice over with no thought to the context of the given scene to me. It's like ManShep never showed up for rehearsal and is constantly reading off cue cards over the other characters' shoulders. It yanks me right out of the game trying to play as him.
I agree
Hale does an exellent job, and she's the reason my first playthroughs of ME1-3 have been with my renegade femShep.
Meer sounds a bit flat, more fitting for a paragon character. He's defenately gotten better and better though (or maybe I've just gotten used to him

Generally though, for ME1? Hale, no contest. I think I skipped 90% of Meer's lines. However, as ME2 played out, I found myself preferring Meer's delivery more and more. Yes, Hale delivery sounds like a badass marine but she never really stops, and fem!Shep comes off as sounding disproportionally angry all the time, even if you're playing Paragon. Meer was also a badass marine, but was capable of being a completely awkward dork, of being *human*. It felt like man!Shep kicked off his boots, had a shower, attempted to make space-risotto and watched crappy vids in the evening.
As of ME3, I've only completed one run through, and that was with man!Shep, and frankly he's amazing. To the point I'm not really fussed about taking my fem!Shep through at all.

FemShep
ManShep
They don't even compare here, Hale's version was on an entirely different level.
Edit: Ok, apparently this wasn't actually cut from the game, it just only appears if you didn't have a romance.

They're both incredible talents but I happen to prefer Meer over Hale. However, I'd like to point out that *I* don't feel the need to belittle and insult Ms. Hale simply because I happen to prefer the male version of the character that she voices.
Honestly, I always see more of the "belittling" from the Hale fans.

I personally love Meer's voice acting, and he *is* the voice of Shepard for me. Hale does a fine job, but overacts much more often than Meer does. Taste is a factor here, as is preference.
But despite the stats, these forums are 70+% femsheps.
Just another indication of how unrepresentative these forums are of the general playerbase.

For me there is no Commander Shepard without Jennifer Hale, but youre free to disagree, no one loses here.

I agree. I think it's because the femsheps are in the majority on the BSN, but in game (per kotaku's links) are only 18% of all Sheps played. The BSN is way unrepresentative of how most players play ME.

WHY DID THEY CUT THAT OUT??Atalanta wrote...
Most of you have probably already seen this, but I'll share it anway. It was a scene between Anderson and Shepard that was cut from the ending.
FemShep
I'm not normally a fan of female voices (that goes for singers as well), but Femshep is the first female I have really respected and looked up to after Captain Janeway (growing up). She is just phenomenal. I have tried playing as a male shep and just couldn't connect with his voice.
Hale's voice for Shepard is strong and un-wishy washy, and perfect.

No offense to Jennifer Hale, but to me the Femshep voice doesn't fit right. To me it sounds like it's trying to be TOO manly.
To me the Maleshep voice flows right for all 3 Mass Effects.
Thoughts?
I slowly got sick of the FemShep voice acting...don't hate Jennifer Hale, loved her as Bastilla in Kotor, but FemShep started rubbing me the wrong way halfway through ME2...

I also really enjoyed how BW really changed the lines for mshep and fshep there were few instances were both spoke the same lines when dealing with the same characters I really enjoyed that I got to play ME3 from a male's perspective with male oriented speech and from a woman's perspective with more female oriented speech which really made both playthroughs feel unique and very little copy/paste like we've seen in past ME games.

I had that impression in ME2, but I think it's a lot better this time, both for male and female Shepards. Voice acting in general seems to have improved.

The biggest fans of the franchise would bother haunting the forums in the first place, don't you think? It's a little silly to say "most people play as a guy so they prefer Mark Meer." I think many players simply wouldn't care about acting. Be more interesting to see how many players skip the dialog entirely.
