No offense to Jennifer Hale, but to me the Femshep voice doesn't fit right. To me it sounds like it's trying to be TOO manly.

To me the Maleshep voice flows right for all 3 Mass Effects.

Thoughts?

I don't want to encourage this debate (to me they're apples and oranges) but FemShep's voice is too manly? I find her voice entirely appropriate. Often tough, but she's downright vulnerable when she needs to be (romances, extremely apparent in the ending portion of ME3.)

I think both do an amazing job, I have many male and female plays. Most are male though, but I think most of my Liara mances are female. Something about getting ploughed by Garrus doesn't sit right with me.

See MP, I don't get that. I always felt that Manshep sounded like he was in the scene. Femshep's voice sounds like she's trying to be a guy and depending on the modeling choice, it seems to throw everything off. to me.

A game example is Aria. She's tough. She sounds like a woman. In fact Aria scares the crap out of me.

Still Shep's a career soldier, Aria isn't. I think Hale reflects the military culture in her performance. Found a good video that compares their acting though:

It's just Hale sounds like a professional voice actor. Meer sounds like a guy who is used to doing voice overs in commercials or something.

That's what I like - she's a complete badass... but sometimes, when the time is right, you can see the cracks in the armor, and go "Damn.  She's really just a human being underneath it all, but she still manages to do what she does.  Bravo, Madame!"

I thought Meer did a superb job in ME3. His level of performance went up in each game and he really put a lot of emotion into Shepard.

Hale just sounds too forced for me as well. I just can't get over the way she sounds.

Granted, she isn't bad and far more better than most VO's out there. I don't think people understand how difficult it is to voice a main character for a game like this where the player shapes the personality, so they have to keep it level at some points.

They are both great; stop putting one up above the other.

That's a great video that proves it exactly.

Like them both. Hale and Meer are both amazing. Awesome Shepard is Awesome, no matter what sort of plumbing they have.

This isnt even a contest, Hale is better than Meer to the same degree that the end of ME2 was better than the end of ME3.

Dear God, why the hell did you make this thread? Now it'll be basically a men vs. women argument with a few people who prefer the other.

Edit- Oh and I prefer Meer. Hale just doesn't sound angry at all. Especially the Overlord part. I've played with both MaleShep and FemShep and Hale doesn't show any sign of anger in her voice when talking to Archer. Especially the bullet line with Archer, Meer does that like a beast.

Yeah I tend to ride Paragade with my Shep. So she can be compassionate when the situation calls for it. And Hale manages to balance her perfomance so well as to allow that mixing and still make it seem like the same character.

Yeah she has an incredible range. This is another good video:
Didn't even know she was in half these roles, especially when you get the Cartoon Network stuff.

I love Hale in the ME series. I *wish* I sounded half as badass as she does. Speaking as a female gamer who is SO. ****G. SICK. of female game characters being whinly little ****s that run around in high heels and wonderbras... Damn, but femShep is a breath of fresh air. Love it.

Yes exactly!  :D

Jennifer Hale's voice acting is outstanding as always, just love it =) My mister said that Mark's voice acting has improved in ME3, haven't heard enough myself to judge though, but I'll always prefer my lovely femshep <3

This isn't asking which Shep did you prefer to play.

This is asking about which Shep did the better VA job. Of course, for me, that's why I played FemShep in the first place.

Hale has done more roles in videogames than anyone but Jen Taylor voices Cortana from Halo, not Hale.

From what I've heard in trailers, etc.....Meer has improved a lot, like ME3 he sounds really good but........

I am FEM SHEP all the way. She just sounds good in all the right places and she's been consistently good since the beginning of the franchise. I don't know, Jennifer is awesome. ;D

She sounds tough when she needs to but can also soften and be feminine when it's required.

I find Meer's better because he expresses far more emotion. Hale's is a tad too flat and monotone for me. [/quote]

This has alot of what I mean in regards to Hale's shep, along with the artifical deepness that someone else had mentioned.

Also to the note, I play a No makeup Femshep.

Hale's VA is far and away superior to Meer's- which isn't putting Meer down, he did a fantastic job, and he does deliver a few lines better than Hale.

But Hale is simply on another level altogether. The ME3 trilogy with FemShep was the greatest VA job done, ever.

Well, I always found FemShep to sound boring and had this really weird and creepy whispery sound to her voice. And I feel that she overacts quite a bit. But most of the people here on BSN are crazy when it comes to FemShep. FemShep CAN DO NO WRONG.

I could never get through a playthrough with her. I actually stopped playing the game when I first got it because of a mix of playing the game wrong and making a FemShep. I got to right before Virmire and traded the game in. I picked it up a few months later, made a new character and never looked back. Meer, I feel, has improved with each game, including DLC released after each game came out. I felt he was especially good in ME3 while FemShep...well still sounded bored.

Which is too bad, because I like Hale as a voice actress. I don't get why she sounds so bored in the mass effect games.

ME1 Meer was a robot. He got better with ME2, and his renegade deliveries are hilarious, but Hale does a better job of getting in character and altering her tone according to the situation. Meer's tone stays pretty stagnant throughout.

I have yet to try broshep on ME3, so I'll reserve judgment until I do.

I <3 FemShep to pieces and prefer her in all ways, but that's personal preference. That's the whole point of the series: we each get to have our own, personal Shepards.
