it takes a different approach playing a melee warrior.

You need to invest heavily in willpower, you can't chug potions like mages can.

Don't start the battle with all your sustained abilities turned on. Have 0 or 1 always on (typically a defensive one like Shield Wall or Indomitable), and then use your active abilities early. Your abilities reduce your current stamina count, and when the current stamina gets below the upkeep cost of each sustained ability, you can then activate the sustained ability for no initial stamina loss.

Invest heavily in Willpower?

Joking? No, use Wynne or get Morrigan to learn rejuvanation spells, Leliana's song can help regen also. Dont waste points on Willpower.

If you were daft enough to go 2handed get the +stamina maul from denerim dwarf salesman if you feel you need more stamina.

Nope. Rejuvanation is nice, as is the bard song, but they're not enough.

Willpower rocks, at least it did for my two handed weapon using warrior. I ended up with 40 willpower and lots of +stamina and +stamina_regen gear, including that maul.

that meant the character could spam special abilities as soon as the cooldowns allowed...

every battle starts with
Indomitable (always on, it's awesome to never be stunned or knocked down).
(run up to enemy)
Perfect Striking (0 cast time)
Activate Precise Striking (0 cast time, 0 stamina loss since it's upkeep is less than Perfect Striking's activation cost)
Sunder Arms
Sunder Armor
Mighty Blow
Critical Strike
Two Handed Sweep (This gets used as soon as you are mobbed by the bulk of the enemies)
Sunder Arms (by this point, it's 10 second cooldown has cooled down since you first used it)
Activate Strong Swings (name? the extra damage talent, the upkeep is less than the stamina you've already used)
Activate Beserk (if you're a beserker... the upkeep is less than the stamina you've already used)
Activate Threaten (the upkeep is less than the stamina you've already used)
Activate Rally (if you're a champion...the upkeep is less than the stamina you've already used)
Then start spamming the active abilities all over again, chugging a potion in the moments where all your abillities are cooling down, but one of them is ALMOST ready (it's not worth waiting for a full auto-attack swing in that circumstance, so use up the 1 second of time by swigging a potion).

That is why willpower and stamina rock for warriors... or at the very least 2 handed weapon warriors...

With Melee warriors it is how you work as part of a team.

Your combinations with whatever the Mage is doing. Or soaking up damage and attention. Or combining with the other warriors to take down a certain threat. Or fighting front on so the rogue can backstab. You also can have immunity to stun and knockdown.

I disagree. I am having a blast with my DW warrior.

Sure the beginning was a bit difficult and I nearly always have a mage for healing or control but my warrior is a killing machine.

My favorite combo is to let Morigan freeze the ennemies then unleashed a world of hurt and criticals shattering them to pieces. And there is no friendly fire with DW aoe.

Torias is right, use of your special skills while your stamina is full and THEN use your stances.

The only problem with this approach, is that dw warriors tend to put out more damage using a mixture of just auto-attack, momentum, whirlwind and sweep...which you really don't need much stamina to keep up :D 2 handers on the other hand definitely benefit from a tad more focus on willpower (though as has been mentioned, they can typically get quite a nice amount of + stamina gear)

Aye.

Use auto-attacks with your dual-wielding warrior in combination with Frost/Fire weapons and you'll see a massive increase in damage - dealing 20-30 more damage per hit is massive, especially when coupled with Momentum.

WTF? Warriors are fantastic! Many of their talents are a little bit like Mind Blast - not Elemental damage focused, but they're incredible. And they can take damage like an AW almost from the get go.

Another one of these threads where the player hasn't figured out how to do awesome dmg like a caster as a melee.  It can done and is actually quite easy to do IF you understand how your stats and skills work together.  It takes about as much Micro as casters so no it's not harder.

Melee gets better later on. It'll still be like 3 times worse than magic but at least you're able to compete. I'd say Warriors are by far the worst class of the 3. The only reason rogues are passable is because the ranger class essentially gives you an additional character.

I find to have a chance I either stack mages or use ranger rogues to have a bigger than normal party.

Personally, I'd like to see rogues and warriors majorly buffed in almost all categories and see the ranger specialization get nerfed a bit. The summonable pet is just too good as a specialization compared to the others.

It's not nearly that bad.  Once they fix the problem with misses happening so frequently and get the right stat calculations it will be fine.  As it is melee aren't that bad off though and have the advantage of durability.

Actually, on my first play through I created a full-on defensive tank and in many battles she was the last one standing and pretty much soloed whatever was left. Granted, this was on normal and I rarely paused during battles. But that's how I like to play.

I play a sword&shield type and while I find my character to be a sound bedrock of durability and often the last man standing in sticky situations, I must admit that I often switch and control the party mage directly while leaving the other characters in the semi-safe hands of my tactical setup. While I understand that this game is about the party, it does feel a little wrongthat I don't control my own character that much during actual combat. After all, he is the guy I identify with. I kinda wish BW would switch back to a version of the D20 system, which I feel is far superior to their in-house one.

Willpower is extremely useful for a DPS warrior. I am currently playing a level 16 warrior, with 30+ willpower without items and I always wear light armour well in combat. I almost never run out of stamina, and am constantly using my abilities, however I almost NEVER use sustained abilities. I run 3 warrriors, and while Alistair and Oghren attract the attention of the mainforce, my DPS stamina warrior can kill groups of mages and archers in a matter of seconds while taking very little damage by using stuns, and knockdowns incorporated with major damage dealers like critical strike, mighty blow, sunder arms.

However if you want to wear heavy armour, that means more fatigue, less stamina, less abilities. If you want to be the tank, that means you'll probably use the points you might put in WP instead for CON, so there is even less stamina. The best ways to increase your stamina for a tank are magic items, specific item sets which give you a fatigue bonus, tomes. Not a huge amount of options, but there are ways to find more most stamina for your tank.

In general, a tank is probably going to be the least exciting character to play for most people, unless you love mindlessly swinging your sword away and watching your character get mobbed. Or, you could alway just use one of the many other characters found in Fereldan.

melee is fine. just l2p.

tell your party to attack only the ones with less than 75% health and tell your healer to regen your stamina. then try this:

run in with shield wall, quickly pummel the caster, shield bash the rogue or 2-handed warrior, turn back to overpower the caster. the caster is now less than 75% without being able to finish casting a spell, and arrows and 2handed madness from your party would just land and finish him off.

at the same time, all the melee is attacking you, run over to auto-attack the archers to death. by now your stamina is back up so turn around an use assault to finish a melee.

youll need 7-8 skills from the weapon and shield section to pull this off, and its alot more work than mindlessly spamming spells far far away. but i can tell you that its alot more satisfying. sometimes you get rewarded by killing off some dude with a nasty finishing move in slow-mo, which happens alot against bigger enemies.

its probably the hardest on melee classes at the lower levels because you are concerned with stacking up the str and dex needed to use your gear and get the talents you want, which leaves little to no room to stack on willpower.

later in the game after you have your str and dex you need for your gear and talents and start stacking up willpower they just keep getting better.

shield spec probably has the least activated abilities to use and they are all on rather long timers, but on the flipside they have a buttload of persistent abilities to keep up so willpower is still very essential to them if you want to effectively tank with your persistents up and be able to use your abilities.

if you have heal pots and a healer behind you, stacking con isnt really such a big deal in my opinion. most the time you wont take a huge hits that cant be easily healed back, and for the few boss fights and whatnot where you do you can always just spam potions whenever you take a huge hit to augment the healing.

The only reason I find melee more fun is because the animations are hella cool.

But yeah, they're a bit weak in a few trees and overall less interesting to play.

I wonder how things would be if sustains were instead stances, requiring no stam upkeep and just an activation cost, but you could only have one on at a time?

My first play through was as a sword and board warrior and i never had a problem. Infact i thought it was quite fun and i still managed to out damage Morrigan in a serious way even though i kept her with me throughout the entire game. Then again, all that proves is that human intelligence > AI.

And am I the only one who stripped other warden initiates and sold thier stuff before the joining? And does that make me evil? "Sorry guys, dont think you will be needing this....." lolol
