This time, however, when it got to the ending, I paid more attention, and couple things struck me which did not the first time through.
The ending was perfect even after Shepard got blasted by Harbinger. The slow trudge to the conduit beam, and eventually confronting The Illusive Man at the Citadel Arm controls. Lying beside Anderson while watching the battle for Earth was a heartfelt moment because it felt like you accomplished your mission. Anderson said he was proud of you and passed away, another instance of excellent direction by the Bioware writers to make a character's death meaningful. Then, and only then, did it all go south.
The ending officially took a turn for the worse when Admiral Hackett said the Crucible isn't working, and all of the events thereafter.
The Crucible should have worked, and depending on the number of War Assets, should have killed the Reapers and/or save the Earth. If there weren't enough War Assets to begin with, the Crucible should have been destroyed by the Reapers as a result of lack of protection, and the ending should have taken an entirely different approach.
Why all the events after Anderson's death were horrible have repeated many times on the forum, so I won't go into details, but the point is that the ending of this game is salvagable. It seems the only problem is that BioWare made an incredibly bad design decision.
