Here is what I would have wanted to happen to my Shepard instead of what I got, and I am not by any means a writer so pardon whatever needs pardoning.
My ending would have been Shep rattling back to life, taking the path to the teleporterbeam, done the whole Anderson/Illusiveman jig, sat down next to Anderson afterwards and looked out the window. Game would have faded to a video of Reapers being destroyed, people cheering, Shep leaning back taking a deep breath and closing his eyes. Finally done with what he came back to do, stuff in the citadel starting to explode but he dont seem like he cares. Suddenly his radio starts making noise and Joker "Commander, did you see that! The reapers are blowing up! You did it! Now get the hell out of there, half the citadel is already gone!" Shep responds that he is tired, then his loveinterest grabs the mic and yells him silly until he starts moving. The place explodes and the survivors of your team can be seen searching through the rubble around the teleporter.
It cuts to the far future with Liara being nearly 8-900 years old adding stuff to her history-box.
"Most people have forgotten the man, but what he did to save everyone still affects society nearly a millenium after his passing.
The geth and the quarians are governed by a joint council which takes into consideration the majority votes of the geth, and other than some small factions trying to squash the geth they have bene able to maintain a peaceful coexistence.
Clan Urdnot led by Wrex and Bakara was unable to work against the Krogan nature and a new krogan rebellion started a few hundred years after the end of the reaper-wars. The joint forces of the council were pushed back until they enlisted the aid of the Rachni. Which enabled them to push the Krogan back to Tuchanka. A diplomatic solution was struck, giving the Krogans space to expand to, but forcing them to accept being infected by a milder version of the genophage. After having understood the only other solution would have been their complete annihilation the Krogan accepted.
After that she could reference different places you visited like Zhus Hope, maybe it was a thriving booming city now... and any other minor things that could be of interest of historians in the future.
Roll Credits
And then a cutscene of Sheps loveinterest either weeping at his grave with his teammates, with a billion people of earth standing around it at his funeral, or by the two of them looking out over something, Shep having survived in the last minute, as he did in the other ME-games.
