would having that installed and using ATi gfx cards be a possible cause for various GPF errors, CTD's and other similar problems?

I have a ATI GPU (5850) using 11.12 drivers (12.XX are currently horrible, I'd wait a few revisions), with PhysX installed and it works fine. Been playing for over 20 hours in game with no crashes or errors.
So, you should be good to go.
