I know I needed that. ^_^

Thank you for sharing, that was what I needed :)

I must admit, I love this community. I was so sad an cried almost 2 days because of the unsatisfaction I was left with the ending. I cried in varios moments in the game but that was different. I cried when I had to say goodbye to my crew (imo Liaras was the greatest) and my LI (also very emotional).Posted Image
The hole story untill the conduit was so catching and beautiful it was like the writers have been substituted for the final sequence in the citadel...

But Marauder Shields mad me laugh again.Posted Image

Please please please all of you just hold the line.

While we're at it please take the time to look at the Mission Statement thread and poll.

We hold grievances with the current ending and EA/BioWare because:

  • The game's ending fails to meet what we were promised as consumers.
  • The game's ending fails to meet our expectations as fans.
  • The response from BioWare needs to change.
  • We have jobs, families, responsibilities. We dedicate our time to this cause because we genuinely care about Mass Effect and its story.
  • We want to see a product that we, as human beings, as consumers, as fans, and as players can be proud of.
  • We wish to see a conclusion to the game that does the rest of the series justice - in terms of concluding the story and providing the players with both choices and consequences to prior choices.
Retake Mass Effect 3 - Hold the line.

If you agree with this mission statement then please, stop playing the Mass Effect games. Don't buy new EA/BioWare products. We must show them, beyond the use of this mission statement, that we are willing to use what means we have to convey our message. They will know how many people are playing and for how long with Origin and the EA Network.

quite a bit unrelated. But still awsome!

"I’m personally a big fan of the Wasteland series from having played the original game in the late 80s; I’ve also always admired Brian Fargo’s courage to experiment with new designs and game engines from my time working with him in the early days of BioWare when we worked with Interplay, and as a result I’m really looking forward to seeing the next game in the Wasteland series!" - Ray Muzyka - CEO Bioware

I think that fewer posters is actually a bad sign - people who are less enthusiastic doesn't mean they've accepted the ending and all of a sudden like it, it means they've accepted that the ending sucks, won't change, and that it's time to find a new game. I'm already avoiding Dragon Age sequels - don't make me stay away from Mass Effect too!

I just sent this email to Mike Krahulik of Penny Arcade. Most of you have probably already read his defense of the ME3 ending, but I'm hoping that with some more solid explanations we can swing him around.

Heya Mike,

I've been a reader and a fan for nearly 10 years. We even met once, when you were setting up your booth at BlizzCon 05; I was the Blizzard employee who gave you a hard time about being out of stock of PA coffee mugs. Not that I expect anyone to remember that =P

I recently read your comments on the ending for Mass Effect 3. I feel like you've given some great responses and that you are very passionate about games and art, but I also feel like your post (which reaches millions of gamers) contained several incomplete assessments and strawman arguments.

I'd like to address each of your points individually:

1) Brevity

You made a case that complaining that the end of the game is short is unfair, as the entire game is an ending of sorts. This is a semantic issue, and really not very relevant. Many players have rightly observed that the conclusion of the game (a distinct sequence of events) offers little to no insight into the consequences of whatever choice you make re: the crucible. In a way, the player is left with far more questions than answers. Compare this to the ending sequence of Dragon Age: Origins, in which we are treated to a short denouement which shows the results of all the major choices in the game and the fate of each surviving party member.

In a series that has placed so much focus on choice and consequence, having no insight into the consequences of our final decision is very disappointing to many players. We fought to save the galaxy. We would have liked knowing what was saved and what was lost in the end.

2) Its Confusing

Yes, there is an internal logic to the starchild's plan. Its just not consistent with the rest of the game. If the real aim is to prevent synthetics from eradicating all organic life, why don't the reapers simply target other synthetics. Or why not harvest civilizations BEFORE they create AI, instead of after. The Protheans made AI, the Quarians made AI, and the Humans made AI. For an ancient super-being, the starchild hasn't thought this through very well.

3) Lore Errors and Plot Holes

You don't need to be a super nerd to notice some of the MASSIVE problems with the internal logic of the end game. I agree that worrying about the size of the explosions from the mass relays is unnecessary and overly critical. If that was the only problem, it would be no big deal. Its not.

How did my squad members get from the ground to the Normandy (which was taking part in the space battle)? How did the Normandy escape the system ahead of the blast? How did Anderson arrive at the console ahead of Shepard? If synthesis is the final evolution, why did the Reapers not pursue it sooner? Why does Shepard wake up in the ruins of London if you choose the Red ending with the highest EMS ratings?

The inconsistencies go on and on, and they've been listed in excellent detail by many other players. If you're interested, you might want to check out this excellent write-up.
But frankly, while jarring, these internal inconsistancies are not as important as the thematic problems many players saw in the ending.

4) Key Philosophical Themes are Discarded

The starchild reveals that synthetic life will always destroy organic life. This runs 180 degrees opposite to the experience I built over the last two games, as I worked to unite the Geth with the organics. I succeeded, and it was revealed that the Geth had chosen to spare the Quarians to begin with, and had only ever acted in self-defense.

Nope. Throw that out. Some ghostly space-brat tells me it'll never work, and there's no arguing with him. If that isn't a theme being discarded, I don't know what is.

Moreover, you'll notice that the only thing that affects your choices in the end is your EMS score. None of the endings take any of your major, galaxy-altering decisions into account. Why does your fleet strength matter? Its arbitrary.

5) Player Choice is Completely Discarded

You'll notice that other choices in the game are based on your previous actions. They have a relationship to the previous events. The ending doesn't have this relationship with the rest of the series. If Mass Effect is a choose your own adventure book, the final page of all three stories is ripped out of another book. Its not a fit for this story.

Worst of all, Casey Hudson went on record saying that the ending would be detailed and determined by many choices, and players wouldn't be able to say, "I took choice A, B, or C." This is actually exactly what we got: Red, Green, or Blue. Did you cure the genophage? Who cares, the ending renders it moot. Did you save the Geth? Who cares, the ending undoes it!

As you have seen, many people were dissatisfied, and they have what seem to be valid complaints. Some are calling for the ending to be rewritten, others are walking away with a shrug. Very few of them are calling for a fairytale ending. Many are asking for clarification, or hoping that the ending has a deeper meaning (check out one of the excellent "Indoctrination Theory" write-ups for more info).

I can see why this controversy bothers you as an artist. Games, especially games like Mass Effect, are art. You don't have to like a piece of art, but calling for it to be redone seems like an insult to the artist. But look at it like this, if it helps: the people calling for a change are the patrons, asking for a retouch of the art they commissioned ("I love the portrait, but could you touch up the nose, please? It looks like my left nostril is getting ready to swallow my moustache!"). There is a huge difference between making art for art's sake and making art as a commercial enterprise.

If Bioware chooses to take the "Its our art, take it or leave it" stance, they have to admit to everyone that they don't care what we think. It may be the ultimate declaration of artistic integrity, but as a business, that's a dangerous proposition. You once mocked Kevin Smith for saying his movie, Jersey Girl, wasn't 'for' the critics. Well, players have the right to criticise a game's story even though they aren't the authors.
I appreciate your time, and can understand if you're tired of the issue. Feel free to email me if you disagree with anything I've said; I'd love to hear more of your opinion on the subject. Until then, I'll be holding the line!

Thanks for linking that YouTube video in the OP. very inspiring.

Come on Bioware, please make a clear statement on the situation with your otherwise excellent game's poor ending. If there is something else going on with this ending now is the time to say so. Taken at face value, the finale of ME3 falls very far short of the previously high standard in the preceding games of this epic trilogy.

Here's an update from international game retail chain Game in Sweden: they recently sent out an offer to all subscribers to their email news channel to buyback the game at very near the original retail price from anyone who feels like they've already had enough of it. If that's not a clear statement and warning to Bioware, and IMO even more, EA, to stop ****ing around and get their **** together, I don't know what is.

Indeed, I consider Electronic Arts, much more than Bioware, to be the main culprit in this drama. I have seen many smaller game development studios that used to possess a strong creative vision and to put pride in their work, after being acquired by EA, suddenly starting to churn out nothing but bull**** excuses for games on a regular basis. A long-time fan of the old Ultima series of RPGs, I remember with particular bile EA:s acquisition of Origin Systems (the development studio that made the Ultima games) which eventually led to the death of the company and the franchise, and it wasn't a pretty demise either. What has Bioware produced since switching to EA as publisher? ME2 (good, although certainly designed to cater to a much larger audience than the original ME), DA2 (rushed, with a forced style of gameplay and ending, also designed to cater to action-oriented gamers as much as hardcore roleplayers, unlike its predecessor), SWToR (can't really comment on the quality of this product as I've not tried it nor intend to as things currently stand), and now ME3 (no comment needed). It seems obvious to me that EA has a very unfortunate (and, in the long term certainly nonprofitable) habit of forcing several practices on the game studios they deal with, the 2 most fatal being:

1. Design to cater to as large an audience within the global gaming community as possible, even at the cost of selling out a franchise's very soul and everything that defined it. In every single instance I have witnessed where EA suddenly takes over an existing franchise this pattern has been painfully obvious. Hardcore RPG:s become more action-oriented at the expense of roleplaying elements. This happened to the Ultima series upon EA:s acquisition of Origin Systems, and it happened to the Mass Effect franchise beginning with ME2 (which although admittedly being an excellent game, was noticeably more FPS and less RPG than the original Mass Effect).

2. Rushing in order to satisfy fiscal bookkeeping, once again at the expense of quality and even the possible cost of selling out the very soul of franchises. Once again I recognize the pattern from DA2 and ME3 in the case of the Ultima series, most notably the concluding chapter of that series, Ultima IX. In this case, EA forced Origin to release an underdeveloped, bug-ridden mess of a game that in the end was such an unworthy conclusion to the franchise that the protests resulting from the release were initially comparable to the RetakeME3 in force. Lacking the coherence and efficient communication that we now have access to, however, the protests quickly lost momentum in that instance, allowing EA to get away cleanly to pull the same ****ing **** all over again on other companies and their fans. They are in my eyes mostly reminiscent of a locust swarm that takes over companies, consumes their very soul and leave them empty husks. They have now gotten to the Mass Effect franchise and are attempting to pull their **** all over again. I have to wonder, though, if they will get away with it this time, for the first time faced with such vocal, coordinated and massive opposition. Indeed, the parallells one might draw to the Reapers vs. the Galactic Alliance of Mass Effect are numerous. I have to wonder if we will allow EA:s tyrannizing of and preying on the games industry to continue or if we will
