Years ago, I worked for a PR damage control team and everything right now is going by the book. First, re-affirm and ignore (also known as doubling down), then try and define the detractors in the mainstream with things like "this is all a big mistunderstand", etc. while remaining civil in the hopes the detractors go rabid. Meanwhile go dark and use countermeasures through third part sources to prop up your position and brand the outcry as driven by hacks, haters or a minority trying to wear out the detractors on these outlets or "shock troops" while protecting the corporate core.

So, I'm the only one who's mind went to Toto when I started hearing so much "Hold the line"?

... That doesn't make me feel old.

Or like a dork.

At all... >.>...

Not at all, I went for it too.
Even adapted the lyrics to our cause!

It's just too early in this chessmatch to tell I'm afraid.  Watch the game price this week, it might give us some clues. :)

If my tables are right...

And I'm a Ph. D. in applied math so bear with me on this one...

It's unlikely we'll see an effect to this movement in the price of the game until Tuesday of the first week of April.

Then again, I might be wrong on this one since I'm not as acquainted with the gaming industry as I'd like to be, I cooked up this calculation on my spare time this Friday morning.

You may well be right.  Marketing is another fish from PR.  Basic PR theory is just that if a product is tanking, merchants won't want to get stuck with inventory (especially if they have already placed new orders based on sales projections) so they'll start to lower the price to ditch inventory.  That said, how the gaming industry does pricing in particular is unknown territory for me!

I'd love to see your calculations!

 Hello all,

I've been sitting here reading this thread(yep cover to cover), and silently supporting the movement. Finally, I just decided to add my voice to the chorus.
Mass Effect was a huge part of my life. Yeah sounds dumb. But this game helped salvage my psyche. It gave me a refuge to hide in when I came home from a horrible warzone. it was where I went to escape a world that to me had been turned upside down. ME 1 and 2 just gave me the respite i needed to regain what I had lost. Hell, the over arching theme of hope against impossible odds helped me regain my own hope and faith in humanity. Then I played ME 3 and was truly moved by the story, the situations, the calls that were made. I appreciated every sacrifice. Then I watched as in the last ten minutes my little refuge crumbled, dissolved into a pit of despair. Then I headed here, started poking around, and was given hope yet again. I took a look at where we are heading. I had my Mother in law asking me about Mass Effect because it turned up on her Forbes feed. I had her boss( a marketing VP) commenting on the horrible PR blunders and telling me that she had faith in the communal outrage and the movement.  All I can say is thank you guys for rasing your voices. As a proud former soldier and a current Commander Shepard, I salute each and every one of you.

Hold the Line!
Sincerely,
Me

I've probably spent a ridiculous amount of time catching up with this amazing thread but it's so worth it. It's so awesome to see fans being civil and wanting to have a discussion, seeing this makes me so happy that i call myself a gamer.

I'm going to hold the line with everyone of you. I'm not in the slightest pleased about the endings and will keep my flag waving high. Good to see you all!

I am not saying that I want this to happen but I would not be surprised if this thread gets shut down as well since there is technically no discussion going on in regards to the game's story. However, I think that moving this thread anywhere else would hurt the cause.

So...uh...

How about them choices...?

Actually if you look at most of the gaming websites they portrayed people as "entitled". First they said it was art. Then they said they wanted lots of "speculation". Then they said a vocal minority had problems. Finally we have some statements that people are polarized by the ending. All that has happened is the gaming media has gotten more and more egg on their collective faces while the fans look better and better. The few sources that got reviews correctly or tried to be unbiased are finally weighing in on the consumers' side. Even IGN did a facebook poll asking how many liked tha ending with less they 1 in 5 liking and over 3 in 5 disliking it. IGN did this to give themselves wiggle room because they are one of the places with the most egg on their face.

Mmm...

Here is a hint to Bioware. Fix you crap ASAP and FOR FREE!
If there is DLC, make it 100% free. Why? Because else you WILL have unhappy people.
Fix your mistake for free, and you gather goodwill. Well, I know you get it from me but I bet you get it from others as well.

Look at small game producer Stardock. They made this game "Elemental: War of Magic". It was crap... They admitted that they lost the ball in it too, and guess what... When they started to fix the mess with whole new standalone game... They told it is 100% free for all the people who ordered Elemental before certain date. I am one of those people actually...

And now, very loyal Stardock customer. They actually PROVED they care about their fanbase.

If Bioware wants to keep making money from me, they better make amends. In the meantime, hold the line people.

I am quite tempted to also go for the principle of review bombing... Might permanently hurt ME-franchise, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made to make it sufficiently clear to corporations that some things are simply not acceptable.

Let's just not start comparing ourselves to Gandhi.

Let's follow Gandhi's example though, and be peaceful and civil in this campaign. Respectful, but relentless.

Actually, IIRC, they've done pretty much all those things.  "Ignore" is self-explanatory.  TONS of gaming publications have (mis)identified the movement as "whiny, entitled crybabies" (which I'm seeing a lot less of lately), and also TONS of gaming publications have reviewed the game and made zero (0) mention of the ending... although that last one may be treading in 'conspiracy theory' territory.

Thankfully, they've at least acknowledged the movement, although as "some passionate fans" or some such (it's something), but rest assured, they're still going through the PR motions.

Also, I never connected "Hold The Line" with Toto, even though I'm pretty nostalgic about them... I guess I always heard Captain Kirrahe's voice ^_^

That's a rather unrealisitic expectation.

While it's true that the retake movement is growing in numbers, it's unlikely to grow to a size where it will threaten to actually do really sizable harm to EA's bottomline. And the only way that EA would make their developers work to develop free DLC is if they are in fact, positive that the outrage over the ending can hurt more than 20% of Bioware's projected earnings for the next quarter, which due to Bioware's sheer size, scope, and popularity among both casual and hardcore gamers, seems at the moment rather unlikely.

That would be the only moment in which having paid developers of a high value studio make unpaid DLC would make any kind of business sense.

I'm also a former software developer, so I'm quite aware of the cost of... well, developing software. I am severely discontent with the ending. But while, I'd find it ideal that any DLC that fixed it was free, I wouldn't find it objectionable to have to pay at least $10 bucks for it.

There are plenty of other things that should be fixed for free. Face import issues, multiplayer content disappearing issues, etc.

But if they do add a decent ending, it should be free, regardless of how much it costs them. The consumer has a reasonable expectation that if they purchase the third and final game of a series, it will include the ending.

It is not that unrealistic really. I do software for living so I know what costs are, I am also enough of businessman that I realize that goodwill of market is hard currency.

Reputation is something you easily lose and it is hard to build up. Bioware know it very well. If they lose reputation, it can in long term become very expensive thing for them. Games business is heavily competed field these days. EA can do well even with damage, but Bioware will find itself in far less enviable position. EA and Bioware in the end are two different things, despite the ownership. To EA, it is irrelevant what happens. Bioware has to think for their future paychecks. It is quite possible to hurt Bioware enough to make EA decide to kill the brand. Would not be first time for it to happen.

In the end, for every business customer who returns is the best kind of customer, for those it is wise to make sometimes sacrifices for.
