So, I've been quite enjoying multiplayer, even though I can only play at Bronze and despite the fact that I am getting better and rarely get wiped out now, I always have the lowest score in my squad.
My question is: is there seriously no radar? I have tried every hotkey I can think of and there is nothing to tell me enemy position. I'm assuming this is part of the design, and yet in every match I play, my squadmates always seem to know where the enemy position is while I am tooling around in some empty room? Is there a pattern to the spawn points that I'll just get into the rhythm of, is there a radar function I don't know about it? Do I just suck? This last scenario is entirely possible.
Thanks.

You learn the spawns with time, you'll get the hang of it!

You can always hear your enemies, they all make specific sounds. The direction of the sound can tell you what their position is.

It can be communication between the players. For example instead of talking via the game they can be communication via a live party or skype/steam/teamspeak if you are on pc. Also some are able to hear them coming. I know I can.

Word, thanks. I feel like I would get more kills and quit coming in last if I didn't spend 30% of each wave trying to figure out where the action is. I suppose I'll get into the swing of things the more I play. Thanks again.

Geth are much more silent though. Cerberus shouts commands and Reapers scream, Geth just click and fire weapons.

Yeah, the more you play, the more you will begin to understand where they spawn. Technically, its "random" in the sense that they spawn in different areas depending on the location of your squad (BW tried to limit them spawning on top of you).
As far as your score goes, dont be too worried about kills, i typically come in 1st or 2nd simply playing a support role and getting a lot of assists (and a few kills here and there). Youd be amazed how well a Salarian Engineer or Asari Adept can do points wise.

^^ they spawn someplace away from you, and you'll get used to it in time.
once you start playing silver you don't have to fight for enemies and it's easier to get lots of kills.

Yeah sound is a big thing for locating the baddies, learning the spawn areas is pretty important too but its more important to know what spawns are 'blocked' by players, as the game dosnt seem to initiate spawns in areas occupied by players most of the time. (however it can send in more on some maps once the spawn location is determined even if a player moves into the area, though dont think iv seen any but cerberus do this.)

It's very easy to spot enemies, this is how.
You need to "scan" the whole area around you quickly, but just looking around. For about 0.5 seconds you will see the health bar of the enemy when you look past it. By looking for the health bars (top middle screen), you can find enemies that can't really be seen visually, for example if one is behind a wall, but still somewhat close to you, the health bar will show up, you will then know where that enemy is.

There's a set location for spawns, and they almost never spawn where a player is standing. So you just start a process of elimination of spots where players are not, and check them.
You can use this to your advantage too, to force spawns in more easily dealt with locations.
