Yeah, I think he's right. The interactivity and equating of oneself to the character means that his failures are mine, his uncertainties are mine. I don't want to be guessing if I was the hero. The game should reinforce that.

Brent Knowles just joined Marauder Shields as the greatest hero to come out of Mass Effect 3.

bioware needs to remember the ending is the last think people will ultimately remember about the whole series. Make it bad, and people will say it's bad. Make it good, even with bad middle game, and people will say "it was good, only few flaw". We are made this way, when talking to someone, always finish with a positive note.
This guy is true. And DA:O was a masterpiece IMO.

He is the lead designer of One of my favourite games of all time is DA;O and it is what made me consider buying ME1,2 which in return made me pre-order ME3 and praise Bioware as the Gods of RPG.

Listen to this man he is telling 'the truth'.

I'd say "positive note" is up for specification. Sacrifice is an important part of an emotional journey. I do agree that at the very least we should get the option to have a heroic victory. I, myself, felt no catharsis or sense of victory at the end of the game.

Self sacrifice can be positive, you just need to know:
1) the sacrifice was the only option.
2) the positive effect the sacrifice had.

Exactly. And yay, Brent.

I don't agree that all games must/should have a happy ending, but the ending should at least make sense.

He is on the money! A movie, ok, be a downer. 80+ hours rpg, bleak in the middle, victorious in the end... booya!

Again, I can't speak to the actual ending myself, because I have not played it but in general I'd say a Role-Playing Video Game Trilogy Ending should (try to) do the following:
1. Reward the player's choices throughout the series. The big stuff they did should be noted. They should *feel* like they had a unique impact on the world.
2. End on a positive note. This is really important for video games...life in general is full of s****y stuff happening all the time. When I invest a hundred hours into a game I need to walk away feeling like a hero.
When you waste a couple hours of a person's life with an artsy/depressing movie or short story or even a novel, it is more forgivable because the time spent is less. And presumably the consumer knew what they were going into when they started. Certain directors create certain styles of movie. Certain writers write specific types of fiction.
On the other hand somebody playing an epic role-playing video-game trilogy is going to *expect* to be the hero and save the universe. That's why they are playing the game. When expectations don't match reality, disappointment is created.
It might be an artistic/creative move to go with a different style of ending but I feel its the wrong choice, especially for a videogame *trilogy*. Make your middle game bleak if you want to, but end the series on a high note."

This damnit!

And instead, we were left with that:

That's what i've been saying ... if i wanted a ****ty ending I'd just get back to real life! He's right about games not being a movie because what happened when Squaresoft did that with that game "the bouncer" i think, it was a huge flop. Anyways good find OP

I though people didnt want a happy ending? Now you show your real faces

You clearly don't know the difference between happy and Heroic. In DAO you can sacrifice yourself in the end yet it is stunningly fulfilling and people mourn your loss. You die but you've earned it. Call that "happy" if you want but you clearly miss the point.

He nailed it right on the head.

I wasn't even fighting for a "happy" ending before, but when you put it like that way... yeah actually I do want a happy ending.  Life sucks, don't make second life suck too.  Give me my little blue children.

Agreed. Though I wouldn't mind a bleak ending as one of the possibilities. I just want my past choices and character development to matter.

Who does this guy work for now?

He's right.

And not to keep bringing this up, but this is also why you should be able to save Thane and Legion.

As much as I loved these 2 characters..Thane is on his death bed already--that is clear. Legion is a bit different-- a few important people probably need to die to show the impact iof the war--if not it really isn't a war to end all wars.

That's my 2 cents.
