This man is clearly why I've played through Origins seven, maybe eight times now, and couldn't make it through my second playing of DA2. And the absence of his line of thought is why I quit my second play through of ME3 at Mars.

Very well said. I can't understand how ME2, the so-called bleak middle-chapter, ended on a high where I lost no one, where ME3 gives me no good choices at the end. (As I see it, I either force synthesis on everyone whether they want it or not, murder the geth and EDI, or follow in the footsteps of TIM and don't end the Reapers).

I thought the ending was fine, but I agree with his point and I was making this point yesterday.

For all the spurious arguments against the storytelling that people have made, the truth is that games are a different medium and especially with Bioware games, it is probably not advisable from a design standpoint to not fulfill the audiences desire for an unqualified victory, with accompanying parade. I can handle it, but it doesn't seem like most can.

I think with the reaction to the DA2 and ME3 endings, Bioware is getting the message. There's still room for art in other parts of the game, but it really looks like a conservative ending is almost mandatory for this kind of experience.

For example, the Kaiden/Ashley choice was a memorable part of ME1. If that was the choice that ended the game, I don't believe it would be recalled as fondly.

Well, it was interesting in ME1 because you were essentially choosing which character you wanted to roll with you for the next 2 games. Every time Ashley or Kaidan talked to you, you were feeling the reprecussions of your choice.

In ME3, your ending choice is rendered utterly meaningless since you get the same cutscene afterwards regardless. And don't get to see any of the consequences, anyway.

He's absolutely right, and I would assume he's the one to thank for one of the most satisfying endings I've ever played through with Dragon Age: Origins. I'm fairly certain the time I invested in that one game amounted to what I put into the Mass Effect series, and I still smile when I think about how fantastic its conclusion was.

He leaves and suddenly we get Dragon Age 2, that railroads you into a single cliffhanger ending. A cliffhanger!

It is a cliffhanger but at least it's the middle game. You could call the ME3 ending a cliffhanger. A trilogy that ends with a cliffhanger <_<

Cliffhangers are ok when you know there is more to the series coming.  The most notorious for cliffhangers (and I think we can all agree on this) is the Assassin's Creed series, but this is ok because the series is not yet over.  When it gets to the final game in a trilogy or a series or in a story for whatever protagonist you play, you do not want a cliffhanger or missing closure.  It makes you feel worse than you would if you got a cliffhanger mid series.  It's forgivable because you're just excited and amped to see what will happen next; frustrated sure, but you know there's still more to it.

But when you get to the end...that is NOT excusable.  There must be resolution for MOSTLY EVERYTHING.  There can be a few questions, but when you have more questions than answers about a story, it's bad.

Even TV can't pull that off without getting a bad image.  Look at the "Angel" series and it's cliffhanger series finale.  HORRIBLE.  And they only did that becuase they had to cancel the series and didn't get a chance to make more episodes to finish the final battle.  Here, they clearly had the money and the ability to fill in all the plot holes, but said "Meh" and released it...

And threw in some Space :wizard: for extra measure.

Heh, if anyone here played Baldur's Gate, you see this guy's talent first hand. Excelent character development (with much better romances than ME & DA:O i might even add), awesome plot development and many endings to close the trilogy (with the option to choose a tragic ending, if one so desires).
If your looking to play something just as good as DA:O (better even), give the BG trilogy a go, or if you dont like the old graphics, wait for the new "Enchanced Edition" thats coming out.

I had a feeling those games possessed the potential for the things you mentioned ... I tried to get through them on deployment but, there was alot of game time there and very little down time. Maybe I'll go back and try and finish them.

This guy sounds like a great guy. And I totally agree, you play these games for fun, for relief, for a certain instant hedonistic happiness. Not for the ending that we saw.

Dragon Age Origins had a FANTASTIC ending (multiple might I add), he knows what he's talking about.

I agree. Even if you chose death, you still felt like a hero.

This guy give me one of best rpg ending ever, when my dwarven female warrior sacrifice herself to kill the archdemon...

Goshh, he knows us roleplayers so well : I love him!

I though people didnt want a happy ending? Now you show your real faces

You clearly don't know the difference between happy and Heroic. In DAO you can sacrifice yourself in the end yet it is stunningly fulfilling and people mourn your loss. You die but you've earned it. Call that "happy" if you want but you clearly miss the point.

Not to mention sacrificing your character in the end was a choice, you could afterall sacrifice Alistair (or Loghain), or none if you took a deal with the devil!
And all those endings had their place in the game!

Lets not forget the ending was satisfying because you also see how your choices impacted the various races after the battle even if you died.

But seeing is so mainstream.  Why be satisfied with concrete closure when you can be hip and obscure and use your imagination to imagine the end of a $240 trilogy?

Its the same reason why I can keep playing fallout NV since it follows what brent says  its not a bioware game but the ending made me feel dam awesome hell you don't actually even need to fight the final boss in NV plus the game shows you how your choices affected groups, companions and locations.

Bioware why did you let this man go? He knows how to end Games, did he take this knowledge with him when he left?

The Baldur's Gate series was one of my favorite games of all time, but for some reason I never even finished DA:O.

Now that even former BioWare writers are siding with us, BioWare HAS to listen to us, right... right... RIGHT? :crying:
