When I first played the demo on my Xbox I felt the game had a good cinematic depth of field effect.
But when I got the game on PC, even after setting the configuration for video to its maximum a lot of the cinematic depth of field was just missing from the game. I sort of let it pass because it was just one of those things...I dunno why I feel like this looks different but it just does.
Anyways last night after deciding to cobble together a ME2 save variant for import to ME3, I went into the video configuration again, which was still set to maximum and turned off motion blur, saved it, then turned it back on and saved it again.
As the game started it literally hung at the start up screen after I pressed a button to continue and I thought it had crashed. So I went to go kill the process, but it was still running and there was no error.
So after bringing it back up...and starting to play, the whole beginning of the game had a hugely improved cinematic depth of field than my original play through had. Everything looked far more real than it had in my original play through.
Once I got to the Mars Archive it became evident what the issue had been, all depth of field and atmospheric shaders were not running in my original play through regardless of me having set the graphical options to maximum when first configuring the game for first play through. And this became evident because in this second play through there is literally dust whipping through the air on Mars that wasn't there in my previous game. There is red lightning in the sand storm on the horizon that wasn't there when I first played the game and overall everything just seems more real and less plastic.
So effectively it seems like first configuration post release didn't stick and I was playing the game without cinematic depth of field or atmospheric shaders at all. Whereas resetting the configuration file by changing one option to off, then back on and saving it again, turns it into an entirely different visual experience.
Visual Fidelity Bug - Minor but interesting...
