Casey Hudson,
Bioware
Dear Sir,

First off, my heartiest thanks to you and your team for all the positive things about Mass Effect 3.

For a first time effort at multiplayer, the results are truly remarkable. The matches on Gold difficulties are addictive. It might have something to do with the random reward system (reminds me of slot machines), but the gameplay is fun and the enemies are well balanced if you have 4 people in the team.

The moments of continuation of past choices in the previous games were amazingly well executed. Seeing Thane jump in to stop Kai Lang, or seeing Mordin sacrifice his life for the Krogan were truly phenomenal moments. They were very well executed.

You guys did a remarkable job on both these things.

That being said, the ending of Mass Effect 3 seems to fail and even feel out of place compared to these above moments. I would first like to clarify certain misunderstandings you seem to have about our perception of the ending and reasons for 'hating' it.

One popular misunderstanding seems to be that we fans dislike the bittersweet nature of the ending. That is false. If we disliked bittersweet endings, then we would be complaining about Mordin's death or Thane's death etc. But we are not complaining about that.

Another popular misunderstanding is that we simply need more closure. That is also false in a sense since that is only part of the problem. Mass Effect 3 fails as a narrative in that it does not give closure to many important questions regarding Commander Shephard. For a story supposed to conclude the journey of Commander Shephard, it didn't even make it clear if he/she survived. That I believe constitutes a failure rather than a feature of mass effect 3.

So you might still be asking, what exactly is the problem with the ending then? The answer is coherency. The ending does not agree with what had taken place or had been revealed in prior games or even Mass Effect 3 it-self. The evidence for the lack of coherency can be seen by simply visiting the 'indoctrination theory' threads on this forum it-self. Here you will find fans presenting all the inconsistencies of the ending and then rationalizing it all in the form of an indoctrination/hallucination.

To give you one good example of incoherency, the squadmates that come with you in the final battle, magically appear on boad the Normandy during the ending. You might be saying, 'well they boarded the Normandy after you got beamed up'. But if they indeed did regain consciousness after you got beamed up, why did they not follow you? Or why did they not wait for you or join the fight with the rest of the ground forces? Unless we perform mental gymnastics, these sort of narrative points in the ending are hard to understand. That doesn't mean that Mass Effect 3 ending is complex. It simply means that it fails as a narrative due to elements that show incoherency.

This is why most fans have come to 'hate' the ending. It is not something that can be fixed by giving more time with Shephard. It is an inherent problem with the ending, not our perception of it.

In all this, you must also ask the following question. Mass Effect trilogy is probably your best work todate. Would you be happy with yourself about the ending even if we forgot how bad it was?

Thanks for your time!
Sincerely,
A Mass Effect fan

I think people convey things better in a civil manner and the ones with opposite views are usually more receptive in a civil discussion :)

I agree with the OP. All that is needed to fix the ending are the explanation of the plot holes and more closure to what happened to our allies after the ending. Leaving so much up to speculation was just plain lazy, and all it did was leave us with what was essentially a cliffhanger.

Ending DLC would not be difficult, yet it would provide much-needed closure for tens of thousands of fans. The ending of Mass Effect 3 was nothing short of a cliffhanger in our minds, and we would like real answers

Preferably, happy ones

Oh sorry, I wasn't aware of this. That will probably take place as planned too.

I thought I would do this one so that there would also be something on the forum that is presented in a united front. You can just post a 'sign' and do that one too. More fronts we cover the better.
