I would like to take the opportunity to highlight for the folks at Bioware what I hope we can see in the DLC they have planned to release and in addition, I think an argument can be made for the possible development of further ending DLC—despite their claim that they do not plan to create any in the future.
1. Clarification Cinematics to Cure Plot Holes. Any content developed that is supposed to satisfy fans who felt the ending too abrupt is going to have to explain away the plotholes from the ending. This will include:
a. How members of their squad from the final push on the beam made it back onto the Normandy, especially when supposedly everyone was destroyed.
b. How the Normandy made it to the Sol Relay and WHY they jumped to another system in the middle of the battle.
c. What happened with the fleets that are now supposedly trapped on Earth.
d. How are the home planets of our favorite species faring following the final destruction of the Reapers.
e. How is it that the destruction of the Mass Relays didn’t result in the decimation of the systems that included them a la Arrival?
2. Closure Cinematics to Heal our Souls. I personally ended my game with the Destroy option and Shep’s gasping breath from amongst the rubble. This means there is room for explanation as to what happens to her afterwards. Is she found and given medical treatment? Does she recover and continue on as a Spectre? Does she leave active service and settle down with her LI? In my case she was with Kaidan, so do they team up as Spectres and work together for the Council? Does she take the lead on rebuilding Earth?
The point is this: those who took the Destroy option and were able to see Shep survive actually have the opportunity for the possibly “happy ending” that some say they have wanted. This does not mean it needs to be sunshine and rainbows, because I think everyone understands that if taken literally, Shep certainly destroyed the Reapers, but also wiped out the Geth and EDI which could possibly take a great toll on the character, and certainly will effect Joker and the Quarians in a very personal way. But at the same time, you have the opportunity for people to get their houses on Rannoch, or their blue babies or adopted Krogan. [I doubt that Garrus and Shep could sit still long enough to raise children…I kind of imagine them going back to Omega and making life difficult for Aria.]
For those who did not have Shep survive, I know that I would have at least wanted some kind of scene showing her LI grieving for her, or some kind of memorial put up for her, or a funeral service…some kind of recognition that the sacrifice she had made was worthwhile and felt by those who knew, loved, and honored her.
I think that if any of this had been included in the original game there would have been much less uproar about the endings, and people would have been sad to see a great trilogy end, but wouldhave been better able to grieve for their characters and accept what they saw. The very abrupt and impersonal nature of the ending as it stands left most people jarred and staring in disbelief. I know I went back and played through all three endings because I thought I had chosen the wrong one, and then found they were almost identical. I even bought into the IGN-fed hope of a New Game+ alternate ending. All to be left with the same soul crushing feeling I had to begin with.
3. Don’t Rule Out Additional DLC. This will be a hard argument to win, but I think there is opportunity for everyone to win if we can convince Bioware that it is worth their time and effort (read: money) to develop even further potential DLC. I don’t know how many times in the past I have read quotes stating something along the lines of “Mass Effect 3 will provide a true ending for *your* Shepard” supposedly based upon all decisions made throughout all three games. With that being said, the current endings and the fan disbelief in them led to the development of The Indoctrination Theory. While not perfect in itself, I know that all the fans I am personal friends with who have played the game have all adopted Indoc as “their” canon. I think this would apply to many on these forums.
Bioware has the opportunity here to develop a DLC specifically for the Indoctrination Theory, and allow fans who believe that such a scenario better fits how the series should end for *their* Shepard the chance to buy it. That’s right, you have already promised us something amazing: additional DLC to help make the game better at no cost to the consumer. Well I’m saying that if you took the time to create an Indoctrination DLC/Expansion with the details I’ll lay out next, that I would happily pay $10, hell, I’d pay more for it and thank you all the while.
With that being said, here is what I hope you would consider putting in a future DLC specifically for fans such as myself who think the Indoctrination Theory is a brilliant ending for their Shepard. Since I’m listing out my hopes and dreams here, I’ll start back at the Star Child:
A. Destroy the Logic of the Catalyst. We can all agree that Shep, who has argued with everyone who presented black and white choices that she didn't like in the past, would not simply lay down and take Star Child's logic. At least allow her to try to state her case. Obvious examples of Quarian/Geth cooperation should be used as evidence that the cycle of doom does not have to continue and that the current cycle should be given a chance.
i. Because the entire Star Child experience is now part of Indoctrination, it is fine he is not convinced, but perhaps mod the scene a little so that at least the gameplayers see the Star Child slip from his white-angel appearance to Harbinger so that it is clear that we are dealing with a manipulation of the Reapers. It will also help explain how Shep can choose to destroy the Geth and EDI because it seems almost impossible for her to choose to commit genocide when she just worked so hard to bring peace and fight for the rights of synthetics.
ii. Go with the system you already have set up so that with high enough EMS Shep is successful at breaking the Reaper's hold and wakes up in the rubble facing again the beam to the Citadel, but also Harbinger. Let there be a boss fight here. I don't think any player will mind being able to finally take on the Reaper who spent all ME2 hunting Shep and her team and, depending on choices, resulting in the loss of friends.
B. The Battle for Earth should be Epic. Like many others, I think it is important that the work you have put into building your alliances and gathering support has direct impact and pay off as to how well the battle on Earth goes.
i. The game felt like it got scope-locked onto following only Shep during the push through London, whereas I felt like during the rest of the game, there was a good sprinkling of cutscenes or cinematic moments that gave a sense of scale to the attacks (Reapers walking around the moon of Palaven, Reapers landing on Earth and destroying ships trying to flee, etc). Use this final battle as an opportunity to let the work you've done in all the games pay off by showing platoons of Geth landing on Earth and attacking, or the Terminus Fleet getting down and dirty against some Cannibals and Marauders. Let the assets you've gathered be shown in the fight at the same time that Shep is protecting tanks and firing missiles at Reapers and fighting what seems like a dozen Brutes.
ii. Along this same vein, let your EMS and the amount of assets you've acquired actually effect how well that battle goes. Meaning that if you pissed off a lot of people and failed to make alliances means that you have less people to throw at the final push toward the beam, and in the final battle against Harbinger. Sure, Shep herself and her squad (if they survive) will be the focus of any boss fight, but that doesn't mean that the battle can't be influenced by having allies arrive who take out Husks and Cannibals that otherwise would come in droves making the final fight against Harbinger that much harder.
C. Provide the Variety of Endings this Trilogy Deserves. I think one of the biggest things I felt at finishing the game was the sense of disappointment at what COULD have been one of the most epic and amazing series of games ever. I mean you guys were so close! The game was amazing! Until the end.
i. If a Shep sacrifice and ensuring there are no "happy endings" is important to Bioware as creators, then okay. I would have been fine with having that reality forced on me if I could have been given a sense of that sacrifice being worth it. You guys are already supposedly addressing this in the forthcoming Extended Cut. I just want to reiterate how one of the promises of the ME trilogy was getting the chance to see in a real and tangible way how each of our choices would reverberate throughout the rest of the series. These same choices NEED to be reflected in what we see at the end of the game.
ii. You get the idea: a gambit of outcomes where if you make different choices throughout ME1, ME2 and ME3, you can see a completely different ending. This encourages additional gameplay but would ALSO mean that individuals who start with ME3 will be more apt to go out and buy the other games in order to get their desired endings. To that end, I would not be pissed if you chose to make it so that the Golden/Happy Ending required importing characters from the previous games in order to encourage this kind of commitment to the story.
D. Let Anderson Have His Moment. I think throughout the series Anderson has spent a lot of time feeling frustrated and ineffectual. Since he is the face of the resistance on Earth and clearly a father-figure to Shep, let him have the opportunity to take a hero role in the final confrontation with TIM on the Citadel.
i. If Indoctrination Theory has its day, then hopefully the final push into the beam will occur after defeating Harbinger. You, your squad and Anderson all go up into the Citadel together. Do not have the conversations with TIM sound like flashbacks to conversations with Benezia and Saren. I do not need to see his final redemption. Let him be the ruthless man who was finally twisted into the most effective weapon of the Reapers. Ever since Thessia I wanted nothing more than to have Shep put a bullet right between his eyes. In that light, sure, have Shep and Anderson try to talk him down, but it would be nice to see a Renegade interrupt where Shep can simply end the conversation by shooting and killing TIM, but if you bypass that, let Anderson take care of it. Maybe the Paragon interrupt has Shep tossing Anderson a gun because she has to run to the control panel to get the Citadel open because the fleets outside are having a hard time protecting the Crucible. Then we can watch Anderson finally have the opportunity to make something happen on screen.
E. The Crucible should Destroy the Reapers and Not the Relays. Your own canon states that destroying the Relays will likely destroy the systems they are in. Since the goal of this trilogy was not to end in the utter destruction of all life in the galaxy and instead was to SAVE those people, kill this plot hole by ensuring that when the Crucible activates it really does only destroy the Reapers. This logic doesn't even need to be explained and you can keep the energy wave graphics already developed because we don't care why it works, that can just be part of the design that was taken care of by the Protheans. This way Shep's final actions leading to the salvation of the galaxy will actually result in its being saved, and not in 1000s of people being stranded on/around Earth without any hope of ever getting home.
You guys at Bioware are the professionals and will obviously be able to come up with far more effective storylines, dialogue and ideas then I can, as witnessed by the sheer genius of the scenes with Mordin, Thane and Legion. I have faith that the writers and developers who crafted those scenes can do justice to the final chapter for Commander Shepard, a character we as a community have so personally invested in and loved. I hope you’ll take this opportunity to show us just how amazing an ending you are capable of coming up with. Thanks to anyone who actually took the time to read through this.
TL/DR, I know, I’m sorry!
