I loved Mass Effect 3 overall but the ending... no, just no. The ending was definitely not up to the standard that the Mass Effect series has been so far, we want to see that our choices mattered, show the people of the galaxy, show our crewmates, show them do something rather than just stand there too, we want some dialogue... please do that and add an ending where Shepard survives without having to destroy ALL synthetic life in the galaxy, please Bioware.

For what it's worth this is a proposed endgame put together based on numerous great ideas from the forums. I believe this is much more satisfying, removes plot holes and makes your decisions matter a whole lot more without completely changing the last mission. Like I said this is based off ideas from other posters so I claim no credit.

To start we obviously need to see more of our war assets in action. During the fight through no-mans land there should be cutscenes depicting Asari commando's setting up biotic shields, krogan fighting rachni, geths working alongside quarians etc.

Once we reach the beam and Harbinger arrives this is where the new ending would come into play.

1)  Shepard's team charges towards the beam but they are blasted by Harbinger.
2)  Anderson picks up a shellshocked Shepard and they continue towards the beam.
3)  The two squad mates are already there and hold off Reaper forces whilst Shepard and Anderson enter the Citadel.
4)  Inside they find Illusive Man who is attempting to control the Reapers.
5)  TIM uses his new powers to make Shepard wound Anderson.

 a) If collector base saved:         TIM is too strong and Shepard is made to finish off Anderson.
Shepard forced to watch as TIM attempts to control the Reapers.
It fails and he dies, breaking the hold over Shepard.
 B) If collector base destroyed:   Shepard resists TIM and spares Anderson.
A wounded Anderson shoots TIM in the side, breaking the hold over Shepard.
Shepard can shoot TIM or talk him into suicide.
Shepard and Anderson share their final conversation.

6)  Shepard opens the Citadel and Hackett docks the crucible.
7)  Harbinger takes over TIM's corpse and tries to convince Shepard that resistance is futile.
8)  Shepard must fight off an indoctrination attempt in his dream (by shooting the kid? mwahaha)
9)  Shepard resists and at this point can learn the reason why the Reapers are attacking.
(Or not if the mystery works better.)

 a) Harbinger explains that as organic life grows so do the levels of dark energy. These energy levels are causing the
galaxy to die as evidenced by the sun on Haestrum. The Reapers cull organic life to keep the energy levels safe
and preserve the harvested genetic material within themselves. By resisting the Reapers Shepard is actually
     dooming the entire galaxy.
 B) New game plus mode would reveal the real reason. The Reapers are the ones causing the rise in dark energy.
They have been trying to solve the problem by harvesting organics and using the genetic material to adapt their
own evolution. The only way to stop dark energy levels rising is to destroy the Reapers.

10) The Normandy has landed at the base of the Citadel beam and is dropping off the rest of the squad as
       reinforcements.
11) Harbinger offers to spare Shepard's squad and Earth until the next cycle if they give up now.

  a) Shepard agrees so the Reapers leave Earth and harvest the rest of the galaxy before heading back to dark
      space. The End.

  B) Shepard refuses so Harbinger attacks the Normandy. Squad mates could die based on previous choices.

12) Shepard prepares the Crucible to fire which will destroy all Reaper technology.
13) Harbinger leaves Earth and heads towards the Citadel. The allied fleet attempts to hold him off.

  a) 25% EMS:   Fleet fails to slow down Harbinger who reaches the Crucible and destroys it. The entire galaxy falls to
                          the Reapers. The End.
  B) 50% EMS:   Fleet struggles to hold off Harbinger. Hackett is forced to activate the Crucible early in an unsafe
state. The blast kills the Reapers but also Hackett, Shepard and badly damages Earth. The End.
  c) 75% EMS:   Fleet holds off Harbinger long enough for the Crucible to charge completely. Someone must stay
behind to ensure it goes off safely. Hackett or Shepard can decide to sacrifice themselves. Crucible
detonates correctly and kills the Reapers. The End.
  d) 100% EMS: Fleet holds Harbinger at bay. Crucible charges completely and countdown begins allowing Shepard
and Hackett to evacuate. Crucible detonates safely and kills the Reapers. The End.

14) Epilogue scenes which reflect the choices you made.

There could be an explanation that once the Geth/Quarian alliance is formed the Geth introduced a safeguard into the Crucible design that means they aren't affected by the blast. The Protheans could also have altered the Crucible based on the research at Ilos to only use the Mass Relays as a delivery system and not have them destroyed in the process.

No star-child, no faulty logic, decisions taken into account, varied endings, Harbinger and EMS playing a bigger role.

I agree with what thor_viking wrote. However I feel bioware producers should have a look at this youtube video. Which points out in my opinion why they got so much negative feedback. I'm not hating on you. I loved the game, but the ending was a let down.

I was actually hoping something about the journal entries could be changed - can they keep track of our progress the way they do in games 1 and 2? Please?

Personally, during the scene where Shepard sacrifices himself, I would like to see a flashback to his LI, not just Joker, Anderson and Liara. And (I know this is probably too advanced but...) maybe come up with something that shows the flashback for a character based on how much of a bond we had (i.e. I was friendly with Tali, Wrex and Garrus, so they would appear during the sacrfice scene).

I thought The end mission was a little lacking in length and content, it just felt rushed. For instance I wanted to see Rachni soldiers on Earth during that final battle, fighting enemies at close range while being supported by various species infantry and possibly biotics. I wanted to see the Elcor warriors I rescued with their chain-guns and missile launchers. Jack's biotic kids providing barriers. Maybe even a few of the more powerful biotics like Jack and Samara providing cover during the run to the citadel portal they might not have been able to outright stop a reaper laser-beam but absorb a portion of the damage or maybe even deflect it.  Aria's Mercs fighting on the ground, with packs of Vorcha and mechs roaming around. Make it feel like every War asset obtained during Shepard's jaunt across the galaxy had an impact on that final mission, and make it fell like all that scanning and running from reapers really mattered to the end result.

What happens to the people that were on the citadel when the reapers move it to Earth's orbit?  Do some escape, or are they all killed or indoctrinated?  What happens to the consil, do they make it off before the Reapers claim it?  Was there a mass evacuation to escape the Reapers or were there to few ships to carry every one?  Does Bailey die?

But my biggest issue was with the ending mainly because it lacks any kind of difinitive closure as to the fates of companions and the galaxy as a whole.  What happens to the companions I had with me during the sprint to the portal to the citadel during the finall mission?  What happens to my love intrest? Do the Geth, Quarians and Krogan join the concil?  Are Wrex an Eve able to keep the other clans from wanting to take revenge for the Genophage?  Do the Quarian and Geth remain at peace with eachother?  If the mass Relays are destroyed than how is that Massive armada suposed to get back to their own homeworlds to start rebuilding?
I vote for the indoctrination Theory as it would make everything from the point where Shepard wakes up after being hit by the Reaper beam be all in his/her head and therefore all the weirdness in the endings can be just attributed to an indoctrination induced dream like all those other weird dreams throughout the game.

Other little things about the game I felt were Bugged, missing, or just "off" about the game Include the following.

I'm pretty sure there's a glitch in the one "pick a side" conversation you overhear at the C-Sec office on the Presidium between a human and an Assari C-Sec officer where the Assari is saying they should be concentrating on Citadel defense instead of misdemeanors and other petty crimes. I've always agreed with the Assari but when I check the war assets it says that C-Sec is spread thin because they're focusing on petty crime and misdemeanors.  This would be on the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Having a mission to take back Omega from Cerberus with Aria as a temporary squad mate.

There weren't enough serious side missions where you actually shot at something and that something shot back at you other than the Cerberus missions. Maybe defending colonists from reapers during an evacuation or something like that.  Actually go down to the Elcor home world and have to fight via shuttle do to the planets high gravity while rescuing the Elcor warriors and helping to rescue some of the Elcor civilians.

I liked how in ME1 you could visit the surface of just about any planet that was solid, it made it feel more like I was in a living galaxy rather than a linear story line.

The way humans walk in ME3 continues to bother me, it's stiff and awkward at least when playing as a Fem Shepard. It was fine in ME2.

Lack of armor mods.

There weren't enough vehicle missions.

 Dear Bioware,
I would like to begin by saying that I love your games. I am a huge fan of Mass effect and have followed the series since Saren and Sovereign tried to take the Citadel. This is by far my favorite series and at every turn you have delivered the best Si-fy action shooter ever. Thank you. However, I do have a comment on the Mass Effect Ending. I don't quite understand the last conversation with the boy but I will wait until the now announced DLC is out to comment on that. But, I do wish to comment on the final battle with the Reapers. I have entered such battle three times and each time was at a completely different state of readiness. The first time I was barely prepared with around 3000 war assets and 60% galactic readiness. The battle was thrilling but was mostly a crushing defeat at the hands of the reapers until the Crucible was fired. Then, in the second go around with a new imported character from ME2, I entered the battle with around 5000 war assets and 90% readiness. The battle and cinematic (to the best of my memory) went very differently. It was still a thrilling battle but was a little more in my favor, with 50% of Hammer landing instead of 25%. Plus, the opening fleet battle went a little longer and was more in my favor, however this could just by my mistake and they may have been the same. Lastly, on the third go around with a new character I had recently started in ME1 and taken through 2 and 3, I entered the final battle with just over 6000 war assets and 100% galactic readiness. I entered that last mass relay with a feeling of hope and anxiousness as my fleet went to meet the reapers with the highest readiness and preparation rating I had ever given them. Unfortunately, the battle was not quite what I had hoped. I was hoping for another thrilling, explosive combat video in which the forces of the galaxy kicked the reapers right back into whatever hell they crawled out of. Unfortunately, the battle scene, and percentage of Hammer that made it into FOB was the exact same as the second go around. It was still a thrilling, amazing piece of artwork and exciting story which kept me involved in what was going on but I feel was just a bit lacking. I personally would have loved to be more involved in the larger battle as a whole, especially in the fleet battle. I love the mass effect series and would highly support a Mass Effect MMO since Shepard's story is over. I cant think of anything better than being able to command a Turian, Asari, Salarian, or even Human or Krogan Warship fighting a galactic war focusing on the war and not the setup and leadership aspect as you see with Shepard. Again, just my opinion, and I still think that Bioware is great, regardless of what you decide to do with the Mass Effect Franchise.
Regards,
Ackillian

Another thing, the dialog wheel seemed to be heavily toned down. In me1 I remember talking to npcs and learning about their problems so it could help me get an understanding of how to fix it (or make it worse just to be a jerk). In me3 there was a heavy use of auto dialog. I remember in the hospital somebody was arguing with the staff and all I could do was pick one side or the other without really knowing what I was doing. The wheel was still there and did it's job, but it felt like I only saw it about 12 times. This number is certainly an exaggeration, but that's definitely how many times I felt like I saw it.

When talking to the Catalyst, there's a cutscene where we can see Anderson choosing the Destroy option and TIM choosing the Control option.

I think there should be an extra scene with Saren where you can see him choosing Synthesis.

Please please please get rid of the synthesis option, there is so much wrong with it thematically and conceptually. It is beyond bad science fiction. Also the normandy and crash landing scenes seemed really unnecessary and badly done. What's the motivation behind it? There are far better (and less overdone) ways to depict the rebirth of civilization, which I'm guessing is what you were attempting to do.

In regard to the catalyst conversation I really hope you flesh it out into something far more interesting, synthetics/organics felt really forced and out of the blue. Perhaps more of an emphasis on the need for control over chaos might work better. The notion that the reapers could be from beyond our galaxy and our realms of knowledge was really interesting in ME1, it was really disspointing that they got reduced to being the servants of a really overdone and rather simplistic concept.

I really hope that the writers at least consider what's wrong with the current ending, before extending it for the sake of pointless happy endings people seem to be begging for. Losing all the story's characters would be fine if done in an ending that was interesting, intriguing and well presented. The current one seems to fall flat in every aspect, as science fiction, as a role playing game and even as any form of art or entertainment.

I agree. I understand why Anderson was there (it felt fitting because he had just died and had been in the cast since ME1) but I was neutral to Joker, but had Tali as an LI, and didn't speak to Liara much at all. So when Joker and Liara appeared during the end, it felt impersonal. I think that part of the end should have reflected the choices and preferences made during the game, in the same way as the 2nd and 3rd characters to walk out of the Normandy at the end are those that the player had an interest in.

If I were a betting man I'd wager this will be one of the things that will change in the Extended Cut. It's an easy fix and it makes it seem a little more personal to your journey.

I know this has been quoted recently several times but this is what the new ending should be imho.

Oh, and seeing a character model for Tali unmasked somewhere would be nice, too. Her little memento doesn't quite cut it with this particular gamer so a little effort on that part would be nice.

?  If your are talking about my responses on the page before.... I already gave feedback earlier in the thread, and you saying that to someone is like "the pot calling the kettle black". Given you just offered no valuable feedback as-well with that response. It's a forum not a graded exam, chill.
