The way I see it, the Crucible was writer-designed as a super weapon, not a super-plothole. Now, this super-weapon, to my mind, SHOULD have had three different configurations (to keep it with the current ending, but I'll get there). Each configuration should be similar, but slightly different; eg the Renegade has more external weapons, Paragon has more shields. As the game progresses, more is built (depending on the side-missions done, and the choices therein) until the Crucible can use the Catalyst. Using the Citadel as the Catalyst is acceptable, to me, as it has already been demonstrated to be a Mass Relay in ME1, and mass relays have been demonstrated to be given recognition sequences (Omega Relay in ME2).
Continue using the Catalyst/Crucible, and get hit with two decisions: (renegade) Destory or (paragon) Shield, where the former makes all the Reapers core drives self destruct (including whatever is near them) and the latter forces the reapers to put up their own shields to lock them in place, unable to fire or move. Up the ante, the more renegade/paragon you were during the two previous games increases the certainty (and collateral damage) done to/by the Reapers.
The Third option should have a manipulation of those shields, so everyone can focus on one reaper at a time w/o worrying about getting shot at by a thousand other reapers.
A Third option completionist addendum (all side-quests done in ME1-3, all characters saved) would hit a shut-down switch, rendering all Reaper tech (directly linked, thus excluding EDI and Geth forces) inoperable, including the ground forces. Leaving out the name/species of the original makers can be fixed (all previous cycles helped make it?), but I'd love it if the original designers were the species of the Keepers. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
I also wrote a bit of fanfic here, designed for minimal CGI alteration: http://social.biowar...6036/1#12457483

Citadel:
What happened to it? I hear there may have been a verbal description that Keepers put up shields to protect the citizens, but where did they get the power?
What happened to all the upgrades I spent time putting in it? Cerberus decryption codes were not helpful keeping the Reapers off, and upgrading the power grid of Purgatory was not helpful in repelling the Reapers. Helping the citizens or Bailey didn't seem to do much good either.
Continuing with the Citadel, The Crucible:
How does the Alliance/Council brass "know" this will work? I've been involved with some lively discussions over in the "Yes, we are listening." forum, and there have been some good points made.
Major point for me, the Synthesis option:
Why does Shep die for that, and not during an explosion in his face? Why does he die during the "ultimate paragon" at all? Personally, I prefer the hero to live, riding off into the sunset with his/her LI. Killing the hero (even if he comes back as a "force ghost") just doesn't seem fair, sorry.
The Characters:
Joker: Was his sister killed by the Asari Huntress in the hospital? How does he get on with EDI? Does the Synthesis fix his bone disease?
EDI: Does she live in Synthesis (Ghost kid lied about surviving the Destroy option) (pleasepleasepleaseletherlive)? Is she able to be free from the Normandy?
Love Interest potentials, female: Miranda/Jack/Tali/Ashley/Liara: I did not appreciate having zero interaction with the ME2 crew; Gabby, Ken, and EDI were the only ME2 crew that were put on the Normandy. The rest of my combat squad were either ME1 people (which I enjoyed!) but I would have appreciated maybe trading Ashley for Miranda (have Ashley for two missions, maybe), or James for Jack? I understand the attempt to make deeper storylines, but there was not much more depth created with the fewer characters. I learned about the same amount about each as I did in the previous games (ex: Ashley drinks when she's depressed...and has a sister. I liked the two Citadel talks with her though).
Even when a character was romanced (Jack/Miranda) there was little to no acknowledgement beyond "I still like you, do you like me?" A little subtlety would not be amiss. And no depiction of post-endgame boom? What's up with that? No genetically superior/psychotic biotic/military brat/ space suited children? Or the equivalent for a Femshep? I would like to see a Sheperd with life extended (due to the implants) growing old beside Liara, or having a normal lifespan with Jack/Tali/Ashley. Nothing much, maybe something akin to the paragon ending for Bioshock?
ME2 characters: Having Grunt along would be nice, but I appreciate how he was in charge of a company for Wrex/Wreave. Jacob had a legit excuse, but would be more convincing if he accompanied Shep on one more mission, then decided to go back to the people he cared about.
Kasumi...nothing? The sidequest was good, well thought out (and excellently catered to the playful character ME2 created), but nothing in the final mission?
Zaeed, what happened to his grudge with his former Blue Suns partner? I saved the factory workers (in the contract after all), so shouldn't the ex-friend of Zaeed be alive? A little talk with Zaeed should've shown whether he'd caught up with his treacherous ex-partner.
The ME2 characters, in short were given short shrift. I would've been okay with the ME1 characters going away, one or two at a time, to take care of business; being replaced in the interim with a ME2 character. Such as it is, if I am honest (which I try to be), it is not a game breaker.
EDIT: for clarity
What Happened to the other races? Did Bakura/Wrex stabilize the Krogan into a nation of piano movers, not mercenaries? Were the Asari able to regroup and stabilize Thessia (minor issues with the beacon)? How about the stoic Turians, did they get their planet back on track? And the Quarians...I wanted to help build their new meeting hall with Geth platforms interspersed throughout. We were given a galaxy, and not told how it turns out...just multicolored boom.
I have more ideas, but this is getting long. I appreciate the Bioware team member who is reading this, although I suspect they are taking notes only intermittently (hey, I've been through more than a few boring lectures in college).
Final note: Ultimate Paragon=live geth, live EDI, live Sheperd...don't change the ending if you must not, just twist the epilogue afterwards. As Admiral Anderson says: "There's always another way."

This was from another thread, and I thought it deserved to posted to BioWare's attention. These ideas are amazing regarding how a battle with Harbinger would actually take place!Bill Casey wrote...
Thirteen stage Harbinger boss fight...
1. Opening verbal confrontation.
2. Normandy assault.
3. Shuttle turret suppressive fire.
4. Waves of enemies and dodging blasts before M-90 Cains are dropped.
5. Climbing and ripping through with an omni-blade while fighting off husks.
6. Entering Harbinger and war of words.
7. Fighting waves of reapers and Cerberus remnants while traversing the interior. Harbinger assumes direct control of any Marauder Shields.
8. Fighting off illusions.
9. Incapacitate indoctrinated team mates.
10. Final war of words with Harbinger's core.
11. Defeat Harbinger's core.
12. Escape Harbinger. You have enough time to carry one team mate out.
13. Spend the next eighteen months in a hospital bed.

Maybe a partial Repeat:
1. Verbal battle with Casper the Kidly Ghost
2. Uh-OH moment, CKG disappears, sound of incoming Reaper.
3. Enter team mate with multiple CAIN's being carried.
4. Defend Cain-wielding team mate...ME2/ME1 squad helping out (Samara/Jack bubble, Garrus sniper, Tali sabotage, etc).
5. Get team mate close enough to pound a hole in Big Boss carapace.
6. Fight off waves of Reaper minions..Reaper cannot fire Red Laser Beam while on Catalyst.
7. Reaper decides to use judicious blasts as waves roll around Shep/team
8. Reaper Beam accidentally hits something vital, albeit not crippling (CKG having redundancy).
9. Team mate sees an opening, runs for it, Shep has decision: stop team, or push them forwards
10. CAINs goes boom through carapace, team mate dropping used ones.
11. Sheperd realizes what's about to happen, decides to grab/not-grab the last CAIN.
12. Reaper core liquified (shown to be important in ME2, see Legion).
13. Team gathers sorrowfully, until Shep runs/walks out along leg of dead Reaper a la ME1.
eh?

-Planet scanning was better in that it was faster, but still not a replacement for more story missions. Remove it altogether and provide an on-rails turret minigame or something of the sort. Protgaonist is in a shuttle and controls the turret to shoot down enemies, fighting through some important planet. You protect the shuttle as it picks up supplies, people, or something of the sort. This can be 5-10 minutes, include like, 10-15 of them in the game. That would be a solid replacement for the scanning games. Resource-wise it is far more intensive, so basically have these instead of scanning and the N7 multiplayer map missions and I would've been super happy.
-Don't be afraid to have more temporary squadmates. I like having characters I know (or that are cool) but that don't fit as full squadmates temporarily fight with me. You can make them solely use powers and weapons that already exist, sure. But if you already have the animations for things (like Krogans, Asari, Salarians, etc. fighting), apply them to these well-known characters and have them fight with us. It doesn't apply that many more resources, and would be deeply appreciated.
-The auto-dialogue takes the player out of the game sometimes, as well as certain dialogues not having the choices I want. Some obvious things include being able to have my canon Shepard tell Tali he loves her. On Rannoch, his choice of words made sense. But the fact that in neither the romance scene or the end-game talk did my Shepard say that he loved Tal is just unacceptable. More choices. Neutrality is good. Paragon felt like the Neutral from previous games, honestly, just a soldier getting the job done.
-More long conversations. I want to have lengthy conversations like the one with TIM at the end of the game. Those are great and get my adrenaline going.
-Tali's face was horribly done. Relying on stock imagery for your own work is fine, but it must be used in moderation and with a bit more dignity. Using it as inspiration is okay, but just editing the image? Unacceptable.
-Soldiers should be able to use more weapons. It has always been the Soldier's strength, and seeing that not work in the way I wanted it too was upsetting. I wanted to tote an Assault Rifle, Shotgun, and Sniper Rifle. I wound up removing the Shotgun, but it would've been nice.
-Modifying weapon colors to match armor. Or anything the player wanted. Customization is just always nice.
-The lack of an investigation choice at the start of the game to ask about my squadmates (like in ME2) was missing. It would've made me feel better. Some point after I got to the Council, the Spectre Information Terminal should've let me look up my squadmates and try to contact them. I understand the idea that "Shepard was in a war and didn't have time for personal issues," but he has time to run around doing errands for people anyways. Simply put, he/she has time to be a little curious and selfish and try to inquire about where his friends are. Some you could learn and get a tease for where they might show up. Others could be a mystery. Shepard should be in contact with their LI between the game, and should receive at least one email from them at the start of the game. This will both remind players who they romanced, and also make their relationship feel more real.
-Shepard's forced emotional responses in some parts. I can understand getting sad about a teammate. Why am I sad over this kid? My Renegade Shepard would not have gotten sad. End of discussion. Moving on.
-The Rachni. Poorly executed. I get you don't want to have them be removed from the game if players didn't choose them, you made every mission available to everyone, and changed it based on our choices. I get it...BUT WHY IS MY CHOICE UNIMPORTANT? I get that they created a fake Rachni Queen. WHY!? This should've been foreshadowed better, because it pissed me off so much. It comes out of nowhere and makes no sense. At all.
-Space battle action game. Yeah. I wanted it. I know. It's dumb. Please?
(There's definitely more, but it's late and I'm tired)

Like everyone else I loved ME3 and am a huge fan of the mass effect series. I was like that person back on the first few pages who cried relentlessly and went into a paralysed state of depression and disbelief for weeks after experiencing the ending. I dont think I left the house.
The main issues I had with the game were not so much the ending but a combination of things.
Auto Dialogue
When I was about half an hour into the game something didnt feel right. I actually checked my settings (since they had been changed to include a story only mode) to make sure I didnt have something funky checked that was taking away my conversational options. The auto dialogue was really that bad for me and I was given a sense that the game was now linear and just swooshing me along with it. To add to that Id lost half of my dialogue options, and my cutscene style conversations with crew mates (which had been replaced by over hearing things, or just selecting the member and listening to what they had to say) I understand that ME3 has mountains more dialogue than the previous games but some random chitter chatter and set dialogue isnt what the players wanted, they wanted more conversational options and dialogue. This auto dialogue became particularly crushing in the last half hour as others have pointed out involving the star child.
The new ME3 characters
The new crew members introduced in ME3 were dreadfully one dimensional compared to squad members in previous games and this was exacerbated by a reduction in conversation options as I stated above. Allers was just painful, Vega I didnt mind so much but I felt like his character played out like a piece of corny fanfic. I will say though I absolutely adore Javik and to be honest wished he had simply been written right into ME3 as opposed to being DLC (I dont care though because I got him for free with my collectors edition)
Nowhere to explore
This was another thing that struck me as really weird and took me a while to realise what was wrong. The citadel is the only place you can explore and buy items. This wasnt great and its something Id really like to see changed and if other hubs with side quests were made available down the track as DLC Id pay for it happily. ME2 set a high bar for ME3 to outdo. ME1 was an absolutely fantastic game but going back to the ME1 ways after playing ME2 really does feel like a big step backward. In the very least ME1 had characters you could purchase provisions from on quests expanding the citadel from being the only hub (though barely)
Femshep romances
I think poor old femshep really drew the short straw with romance options in ME3. Kaiden is a one dimensional wet drip (sorry kaiden fans) who whines incessantly, Thane dies horribly (and left me crying in the bathroom for half an hour before I could continue playing) Garrus is awesome but gets no epic love scene like the Ash/manShep, Liara/anyone etc does and who else is there? So If youre a femshep, and you have romanced nobody in any of the previous games you can have lesbian fling, lesbian fling or...lesbian fling? :/ so If youre a female player you can romance one guy and THREE girls? (and dont tell me Asari are asexual because they are women regardless of how they reproduce) I love other women as much as the next...woman, but I found this really distastefully done. Someone suggested in another thread that LI DLC could be made like had been done in other games, maybe this would be a good idea.
Tali
Im not a fan of Tali personally and while I can appreciate the reasons others like her, I find her character grating. I was however just as disappointed with the way her face was revealed. I know stock imagery is used all the way through the series, and the image WAS searched for with tender loving care, but I think it was tacky and her fans deserved something a bit more epic than that. Theres no reason why her face couldnt have been revealed on Rannoch even for a moment. To be honest the reveal of her face after uniting the geth and the Quarians and her people reclaiming their homeworld would have been up there for me with the cure of the genophage on tuchunka (which was one of the most beautifully written and uplifting moments in video game history) seeing her face at that time would have been a monumental moment and no matter how it looked her fans would have appreciated the care you took to build it.
War assets
I wont go back over the obvious about them being more involved in your end game, but I will say that its important that you can play Single player and still receive the whole game experience. Having to play multi to get your assets up in your single player is just dreadful and I have no idea who thought that would be a good idea. If it was an attempt to encourage people to play multi then youre beating a dead horse because people who dont want to, wont.
The ending
I dont want to beat a dead horse here so Ill keep this short and try to cover what has been covered the least.
The Reapers actions and intentions should NOT be justified. The reason they are terrifying is because their intentions can not be known. they can not be reasoned with, they can not be understood. If you look at all of the most terrifying science fiction bad guys they are all beyond understanding or comprehension. The biggest pitfall in ME3 was attempting to justify the Reapers actions and intentions. The fact that they are an incomprehensibly powerful force threatening to destroy everyone mercilessly and without compassion spreading fear and despair is enough. The star child undid all of this and suddenly the reapers werent so scary. They went from something massive and terrifying due to the fact that you didnt quite know if there was something in there watching you or not, to some mindless drones plugging away and doing their thing and some irritating kid using the galaxy as his sand pit.
IF the starchild had some profound intentions or history behind him that went over everyones heads then it needs to be fleshed out for the full gravitas of his purpose or role to be understood by the players. Theres nothing wrong with a deus ex machina if its done right. If its not done right everything falls on its head and this is exactly what has happened here in ME3. This information could have been portrayed in dialogue options with the starchild, but it wasnt and instead the entire back and fourth between him and shepard was very forced and very linear. When the exchange between us ended on my first playthrough I actually sat there in shock not sure what I was supposed to do or what choices I had actually been given.
I know Indoctrination theory is a popular one but for me personally I dont think it holds any weight and would strongly discourage working it into the ending. Fans need to see clarification and to better understand the story the end of the game was supposed to tell. I feel like there is a pretty cool concept in there somewhere, I think it was just missed. Id very much like to see the ending clarified as it was intended.
All of these things makes ME3 feel extremely linear after playing the absolute wonder that is ME2.
ME3 is amazing, just felt very rushed

Regarding that dream sequence and all of it's suporters, it is best if Bioware would take in consideration a subtle "all in favor"/"all opposed" poll and get it over with. One moderator should writtenly aknowledge and validate the outcome so we can all go home.
First of all, in the topic started by Jessica Merizan and subsequently by RaenImrahl on this thread, let me start by saying it is okay for me if the ending is continued in the form it is now, no change needed, if the "dream sequence" theory is true. This can all be explained and all the arguments against it (like "if he dreams, how come he can die?") can be disproved with technical and/or logical facts. If it's not true, then I can go on pages of plothole nonsense I found about the ending, but those have been repeated so many times by so many, I'm not going to even bother.
So, your move, Bioware...

It was without doubt a magnificent game... up until the last 5 minutes. But there is another thread on endings.
What I want to talk about is my bitter disappointment that Multiplayer was actually required in what was marketed as a Single Player game. Not just an option... actually required if one wished to acquire enough War Assets to even have a shot at the "best" endings.
I don't like Multiplayer. That's why I play Single Player games. My wireless connection is too irratic to effectively play Multiplayer even if I wanted to, which I don't. I play my games for literally years, so even if I wanted to play Multiplayer, which I don't, my access to the "best" endings and maximum War Assets will be eliminated as soon as the Multiplayer pool slows down to a dribble.
I implore BioWare to consider a patch to eliminate the Multiplayer requirement, and allow Single Players to achieve maximum War Assets on their own. Please.
Just... please.

I second this. I actually enjoy multiplayer and play it when I can, but some of us don't always have access to the internet. My current job keeps me away from home constantly. I live in hotels, and hotel internet sucks, so I don't even bother trying Multiplayer, but I have been playing ME3 single-player, and I'm a little frustrated that I can't get my Shepherd to survive Destroy ending because my Readiness Rating has fallen to 50% and I can't play Multiplayer to fix it.

Also, this may be a lot to ask, but I would like to see what Drew Karpyshyn's original "dark matter" idea for the ending was. It sounds intriguing.
Also, Tali's face needs to be changed. Honestly, what the hell? Quarians aren't supposed to look like humans with pale skin and small lines on their face. If the EC is still being worked on, please make Tali's face original and alien, yet still youthful and fitting of a Qurian.
