Tricky....
Ten out of ten, an absolutely perfect, immersive experience with no expense spared in storytelling, dialogue, combat design, and voice acting that shone through like pure light banishing all 2D wreckages of brown hued games(Gears of War etc. etc)
The ending?
The ending is akin to the trauma experienced, metaphysically, of falling from the heights of Heaven to steel grey, pitiless slopes of the deepest pits of hell in under five seconds.
There is no numerical equivalent.

0 - The ending feels like I'm watching something. I'm not livining it.
Average those two numbers and you get a 5, which is what I rate the game overall.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS!!! exactly how i feel. dialgue is so minimal in many aspectsChandlerL wrote...
Good question.
I'd say 9.5/10
Here's why .5 off from gaming nirvana:
First my main playthrough ME1 through 3 is with Liara as LI with no deviations.
So ME1 - all makes sense, the better part of the relationship is spent validating and developing it's existence and it makes sense to me, not as a gamer, but as a human being with past life experiences. Courtships are expected.
ME2 - Well, here I had Liara available as DLC. Shame that, however it was still a well done DLC. However from an LI point of view, I felt I had to spend too much time doing the exact same thing as ME1, that is-- validating the existence of the relationship and it was only at the very end where it was once again solidified. A missed opportunity that I was expecting would be rectified in Mass Effect 3 but y'know I was dead for 2 years so, in ME2's case, I must acknowlege it did have valid context.
So let's talk Mass Effect 3 and y'know what? In my opinion, for a substantial amount of the time, I'm having to "validate the relationship" once again- I'm dealing with the same binary question & answer. "Want to be with me? Yes/No" Even with that, I never felt my character had a romantic relationship with her until the near end of the experience and here is where the cracks show, in my opinion. We certainly had a relationship as friends. In fact, the majority of your dialogue with your LI is a two-road static Paragon or Renegade whether they are your LI or not.
For me, it would have been a much better experience if my character got to explore the deeper parts of their relationship such as, the worry of permanent injury and loss (Isn't this a likely event in ME3, noone's worried that this next mission may be their LI or their last?), deeper discussions of a future, may be even arguments that stressed the relationship. How come we never fight? Lord knows we can't agree on everything, can we? i.e. Garrus is your LI, how come he's not bothered that the first missions you do are not Palaven? Wouldn't it have been cool to have a convo where he pressured you to go to Palaven before anything else? Same with Liara and Thessia as soon as it comes up?
In addition, wouldn't it have been much more compelling to "be chased" rather than having to, once again, do the chasing. For a third time having to answer "Hey, still interested? Yes/No" when, in my mind I'm thinking, "Are you seriously asking me this question again?" Furthermore, this late in the ME series, why should your response of "No." cause a definite finality after two iterations of the series with that LI. May be it shouldn't. May be your LI is too connected and invested in you to readily accept that answer.
Let's take that even further, how would players react if they were chased, not of their own direct choice of "yes, I'm interested," but by the actions they took in various missions that resonated with the values of other companions. For instance, say you're with Liara but wouldn't it have made for some innovative and divergent gameplay if saaaay Ashley, once convinced you were not the boogie man (heh), and due to the way you "handled" missions (read, in mission dialogue) was now trying to win you over, your LI be damned, and how your LI had to deal with the premise that you're not just the center of his/her universe but perhaps top of mind of other folks as well. Heck, may be Allers just wants to break off a piece of you because your a famous hero.
I was hoping for some of these things to occur in Mass Effect 3 and I didn't see it. I didn't feel that our "history" mattered because in three games I had to answer the binary question and then build upon it each time. In other words, I was hoping for an evolution of the romance aspect that Bioware had created for us. So that's the .5 off for me.
Food for thought, I hope, for future development.
So 9.5/10
and way to simple. the romance suggestion above is something i wanted to but was dissapointed about.
how about adding that to aria in her dlc. that would make for an entertaining renegade persona i think

Lost point because, IMO:
- Tali's face should have been created in a respectable artistic medium and revealed during a scene that would do the character justice
- Morinth should have had an actual role in the game, for the players who saw fit to spare her life
- London should have had some scenes of fierce battle (Geth ground forces?)
- Diana Allers didn't seem to have an associated sub-plot that went anywhere (I expected an epilogue news report of some sort, but it never happened.)
- The "blue field" in the Normandy is REALLY ANNOYING
- DLC weapons should be multiplayer unlockables (Bit of an oversight, I think.)
- Multiplayer equipment (ammo, etc.) should have some stats listed--we're capable of basic math
- Any kind of a confirmation message would have been nice for completion of Project: Goliath
- After installing both disks we're still asked to insert one instead of the other (360)
- The prothean was on the disc

ending... it honestly depends.
if this is it... 1/10. i give it a 1 because to me Shepard should have always been the tragic hero. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends."
but... if the indoc theory does, by some miracle, turn out to be true... 10/10. it would be sheer brilliance, the ultimate form of player interaction by actually indoctrinating us, the players, rather than just our character on the screen. it'd be a statement about us, the gamers, more powerful than Bioshock's "Would you kindly?" scene.

Multiplayer is better and more fun that I thought it would be.
Only gripe I have is the scanning of random items side quests. Those were boring and annoying.
Before I saw the ending I would've rated it a 9.5. With the ending, probably a 7, maximum.

9.9/10 (Face import, minor bugs, and multiplayer required for perfect ending. Meh, a 10 but you know
The ending:
0/10 if it's true
10/10 if the indoctrination theory it's true and makes sense.

Too much automatic dialogue. And some lazy things like Tali's face.
Pretty much everything else is done better than I ever thought they could do. Its an incredible experience.

Which is a good score. I don't go around giving games 10/10 because it's not a bloody math quiz, a perfect game has never or will ever be made.

just out of curiousity, and ive been wondering this about alot of folks who feel this passionately about the ending (love it or hate it)...
whats your rating of the franchise as a whole? does the ending completely invalidate/validate the entire series as it appears to have trumped at least the final game to you (and others im sure)?

HOWEVER, I was also assuming some of the choices I made in ME1 and ME2 were going to play a big role in the ending, so I didn't mind seeing them not come to fruition as a played.

The story was impressive, you get to interact with everyone you've talked to through out the first 2 games and it brings a certain closure for some of the issues present in the universe. The Multiplayer is actually decent and it's just an amazing all around experience.
with the ending though....

For the whole franchaise, if I'm still ignoring the ending of ME3, then the franchaise get an 8 for me. As a whole, it's one of the best series of all time. Story wise, it's all there. Gameplay wise, it got better along the way. Bioware listened to feed back between ME1, ME2 and ME3, making the gameplay a lot better with the third one.
Replay value of the first 2 games is still there, though knowing how everything ends does put a damper on replayability. I'm on my second playthrough for ME3 right now, only because I want to get the platinum trophy for the game.
If you ignore how it ends, then you can replay it possibly forever.

For me, the ending ruins the whole series. It's sad to say, but if the Indoctrination theory is false, then you just ruined all galactic civilization and probably killed even more than the reapers did. What does any of the rest of it matter then? I don't play ME campaign for the gameplay, I play it for the story. If that story just leads to a giant dump being taken on the whole galaxy, why bother caring anymore?
I understand people who don't want a happy ending. But there are also a lot of us who DO want at least an ending where Sheppard and his LI are together. The game is already "bittersweet" what with hundreds of billions (possibly trillions) dead, and some very good friends dying along the way.
This is the great thing about a game like this though, there is NO REASON to not please (or at least not infuriate) everyone. It would be completely viable to make 3 "general" endings, with some epilogue that seperates them based on who you saved, etc. With 1 being that you lose, everyone dies. 2 being that you destroy the reapers, but Sheppard dies. And 3 being that you destroy the Reapers, and Sheppard lives. Hell if you REALLY want to avoid a "happy" ending, then just make him lose an arm or something. Just look at how DA:O did the ending. I don't see anyone saying that it had a "fairytale happy ending" but it was satisfying, and really allowed people to choose how they wanted the game to end.
Maybe I'm just a romantic, but I really wanted little blue kids at the end with Sheppard and Liara together, at peace at last.

With patches addressing some of the glitches and maybe the journal I'd give the game a 9.6 or maybe a 9.7.
YMMV
