What has Ashley Williams ever done to get the status of Spectre over Garrus?

When I got my spectre status in ME, I was thinking how great it was to be the first ever human spectre. My Shepard was a War Hero background, and progressively through the games I proved my worth.

So... now Ashley gets it. HUH? Same Ash who didn't trust Garrus or Wrex because they were aliens? Same Ash who got jumped by the Collectors on Horizon? Same Ash who got owned by a Cerberus cyborg?

At least Saren seemed elite, and even if people didn't respect him they feared him. Same with Shepard.

Garrus for some reason needed training to be a Spectre, despite being top class in combat and a tactical genius. He sniffed out Saren, and demonstrated his abilities by holding off all of Omega 3's gangs practically by himself, and is very charismatic when leading. When has Ashley ever demonstrated anything close to Garrus's abilities?

Anyway, not a huge deal. It's just I was surprised at how someone who is competent but has never demonstrated any brilliance got to be Spectre over someone like Garrus, who is both brilliant and a good leader. Garrus is the only guy I felt if Shepard had died, he might have been able to take over and stop the Reapers, even though he's too modest to ever admit it. :D

Ingame it's implied that another human spectre is appointed to try and appease humanity while earth is being obliterated.

It's unlikely that the VS actually earned his/her spectre title.

You know the reason...

Udina wanted a puppet to protect him during his Cerberus-backed coup. Being on the council he was in position to strong-arm the other councilors into accepting a 2nd human Spectre of his choosing.

Yeah I guess it was political only. Just wow... it's amazing that someone like her ever became Spectre. That's politics for ya!

I never really liked ashley after horizon. She was just promoted so udina had someone to use.

Edit: plus too xenophobic to be a decent spectre.

I think it's supposed to be part of Udina's plan to gain Ashley/Kaiden's trust. Based on merit alone Garrus should definitely have gotten the job right after the Sovereign fight. Technically all of your squad mates "deserve" it but the rest tend to be too "shady". Garrus is a loyal, dependable, and effective agent.

Ashely helps save the galaxy, Shepard helps save a colony of a third-rate power, and you're asking why she might deserve Spectre status?

Garrus is, of course, a quitter.

Ash has A LOT of off screen time during ME 2 and obviously during the time between ME2 & 3. Who's to say that she hasn't demonstrated brilliance? Anyway, Udina's the one who made her the offer, probably wanted her in his pocket.

Dunno why Garrus never went Spectre, I encouraged it in ME1...

The way I see it, the VS was given Spectre status because Udina was fumbling for any possible resource that could assist earth against the reaper threat. The VS is basically Shepard 2.0 - two human Spectre's uniting the galaxy in earth's cause is better than one (a moot point however considering the VS joins Shepard).

Yeah, word. Garrus ran off to Omega to fight injustice. I didn't see him trying to save the galaxy until I pull his ass out of there.

Let's be fair, Garrus was being considered as a Specter but he wouldn't play ball and he wouldn't put in the time. I can easily see Ashley Williams getting the nomination because of her role helping to save the Citadel.

Considering the only other Alliance member who was there was Kaidan, and he's dead if Ashley is alive, Ashley Williams earned it.

P.S. Who else are they going to give the job to?  The ex-Cerebus members?  Zaeed?

Udina was also well aware of the suspicion Jenkin's held towards Shepard because of his time with Cerberus.  If things came to a head, Udina wanted someone who would stand against Shepard, at least to delay, instead of just falling in line like pretty much anyone else would have done.  Udina's a right bastard, and deserved to die, but he's a smart and intelligent one that is quite skilled at using people for his own ends.

Garrus just doesn't like politics or bureaucracy. That's why he quit.

Also, the VS never really does anything that would qualify them as better than Garrus. In the end the VS gets Spectre status for political reasons, not because he/she is extremely skilled.

Garrus is a surprisingly awful leader. He got my fire team killed. Good thing SPECTREs don't have to be good leaders?

Love him to death though. Brofist all day e'eryday on the Presidium while shooting bottles.

I felt like it was political correctness to me. I hadn't really considered whether or not Udina had been trying to use her.

Uh, Shepard got Spectre status for political reasons. Mainly because Udina and the Alliance had been begging for one for decades.

Shepard didn't become the first Human Spectre because the Council was like 'that's a badass there, we want him even if he's human.' Shepard got the nod because Anderson failed and the Alliance was playing politics.

Play ME1. You become a Spectre because you're the best humanity has to offer. It's explained in the friggin prologue.

Ashley served in the military under the government, Garrus went off and played vigilante. They both did these things for 2 years. Ash got promoted because she stayed "in the system".
