What has Ashley Williams ever done to get the status of Spectre over Garrus?

There's more to it than being a good soldier.

tbf I don't think Garrus would want to be one anyway. He cares too much about what his father thinks.
At the end of his arc in ME1 he says he wants to re apply.

Garrus turned down an offer to become a specter pre me1.
Not exactly, he was considered for evaluation (one of like a thousand turian military candidates) and could have received extra training to up his odds of being seolected. But turned it down because his father didn't approve of the Spectre program.

Except he didn't, and he implies through-out the trilogy he cares about what his father thinks, and his father hates Spectres.

If you renegade him in ME1 he goes back to Spectre training ... and quits because too much red tape. Hilarious, isn't it?

Ashley served in the military under the government, Garrus went off and played vigilante. They both did these things for 2 years. Ash got promoted because she stayed "in the system".
Yeh, thats my interpretation as well.

I don't get it.
When offered a chance to completely free himself of the constraints he continually professes to despise, he rejects it.

Well, technically it could be the basis for an intriguing character. A guy who's too stubborn and hot-headed to be a good follower and too stubborn and hot-headed to be a good leader. Always looking for his place in the galaxy and never quite finding it. Trying to please his father. Trying to please Shepard. Never knowing what to do with himself. Sounds like a good concept to me.The Night Mammoth wrote...

However, Garrus was the victim of his own popularity that demanded he'd be stereotypically badass and inoffensive. Flaws go unnoticed and he ends up being honored for riding Shepard's coattails.

Or maybe they offered him a position but he asked them to wait a bit since he was in the middle of some calibrations.

Well, yeah, it's kind of a big deal. Even Shepard wasn't asked to directly protect the Council. Ashley wasn't even completely healed from her wounds she sustained on Mars when Cerberus attacked the Citadel. Despite all that, I think her problems with aliens all goes back to what happened to her grandfather. That sort of thing stays with a person until they're able to let it go, and I think she finally did that in ME3. She seems more mature in ME3 than the previous games.Geomon19 wrote...
I love the smooth transition from ME1 Ash's I don't trust aliens, especially the council to ME3 Ash's It's an honor to be a Spectre and protect the council.
Anyway, I wish Ashley becoming a Spectre was more important to the story outside of the Citadel coup. She may not be Shepard's equal in combat skill, but she is his equal in rank, both Alliance and Council. We see her leadership skills on Mars when she suggests using the Cerberus radios against them and again during the coup.
She should have been treated as second-in-command. As the second highest ranking officier on the Normandy, if something were to happen to Shepard, Ashley would be the one to assume command of the ship. Instead, she just sits in Samara's old room all the time isolated from the rest of the crew. Shouldn't she be communicating with the Citadel Council while aboard Normandy? Something would have been better than nothing.

The VSes seemed pretty capable. I would have liked some more info on their service record before making a determination on either of them becoming a Spectre .fiendishchicken wrote...

Kaidan perhaps might make some kind of list.
Ashley, the only reason anybody knows her is because she was riding on Shepard's achievements before.
I believe however that neither were qualified in any way for the job. It was as I said. A sympathy bone for humanity because of Earth on the council's part, and an unwitting pawn for Udina.

And the Council making Shepard a Spectre wasn't them throwing humanity a bone? I would argue that it is even more so in Shepard's case.fiendishchicken wrote...
