well i played through once as mage on normal...and it was not too challenging except in some fights
now i am playing through as a rogue, which i think should be harder
my question is should i stay on normal, go hard, or nightmare
note: i don't want each fight to be ridiculous
i do not want the difficulty getting in the way of my fun, which is why i don't really want nightmare
however, how is hard with rogues?
should i try it?

Nightmare isn't ridiculous. If you managed the game with no problems in the first place, the difficulty slider shouldn't affect you.

I started with a mage on Normal and bumped it to Hard for more of a challenge. I am now playing a rogue on Hard and it seems easier than previously for most fights, largely because my strategy has improved the second time around. I tend to do a lot of micromanaging and pausing though.
So go ahead - bump it up. Dual wield high Cunning dagger rogue is a lot of fun.

Some of us don't cheat. Yes this includes strategy guides and super-cheap spell combos you read about.
Try role playing... I die 20 bleeping times every bleeping encounter... on normal.

Hard is the Standard Difficulty, unless you are deliberately gimping your party you should have no problems.

Haha shame on me. I honestly don't know why my team is so weak. I use normal because of the half damage on party AoE. I should use Dog more since he's more resilient and strong than my Alastair is... but I always feel obligated to take him (3/4 encounters) since he's been a Grey Warden longer.

Do you happen to know, which setting represents best the good old D&D rules?

Probably "Hard" since it is full AoE damage vs allies. This game is more loosely based off D&D than other Bioware games.

I dont see a difference in difficulty in what you are, since you get 3 teammates that accommodate any weakness. Like if i wouldnt play a mage, i would have to find one (morrigan etc). Hard is kinda the standard difficulty ,and you can tune it down anytime.

OK, thanks. In some games (BG1?) it was the default setting, in others (BG2, KotoR) you had to rise it by one. Sounds fair enough, now I'll just wait and see, where the devs "cheat". I do not.

I am having trouble on normal - lol. I am a veteran RPGer and my team make up is just weak on most encounters. Two rogues, Allistar and Morrigan. Can't get to far in the elven ruins, getting stomped at redcliffe castle, and some random encounters are just plain extra hard. I refuse to go to the easy mode. I guess I am pushing the plat too fast.

In fact, the game is not based on d&d rules at all.
Still, I am a BG veteran (and played all the d&d based games too) and I still managed just fine on hard difficulty. I think the problem areas are that you might make poor talent choices and end up suffering as a result. I was lucky and my mage did not waste more than 2-3 talets over his career on skills that I now know would have been better spent on something else. I did not read any strategy guides or such things before starting and the only tip I got from a friend was to take force field asap - it helped.
I did not use arcane warrior either, but I was also lucky not to use shapeshifter too.

Beat the game on normal as a Warrior. Found it decently easy.
Tried the game on Nightmare as a Rogue... fell asleep. Was ridiculously easy as well. Don't think you'd have a problem with Nightmare as a Rogue. Just need to drop mobs as fast as possible and it's a breeze.

I first played this game on Hard with a rogue (still playing my first runthrough). I found the game very challenging early on. I had to micro a lot. Now the game is getting a bit easier later on. One reason is I am more powerful but the other is that I know what I am doing and finally I got some tips from this forums.
For people who say that they bumped the difficulty but they still found it easier when they played again, that makes sense. Knowledge is power and the second time around you know exactly which builds are most effective, which skill combos are most effective and where to go to get the best gear and how to ramp your resources up. Increasing the difficulty is no match for gameplay knowledge.
IMHO what is most impressive are people who play on Hard/NM without ANY tips or strategies. They figure it all out on that own. I tried to do that but got halfway in and ended up going to the forum for help.

well
i found that with stealth pretty much all fights are really easy
i just let my party die, and then pick off seperate enemies with combat stealth
my rogue by itself is totally owning things on hard
i destroyed all the bosses in the fade, including the sloth demon
my problem now is with the companions
they are much weaker than i am lol

Played my first run as a gimped rogue on hard (great attention to non-combat talents/skill). I had Morrigan as the one mage in my party and didn't give her heal (just can't picture her casting heals when she could be casting some evil spell).
I found it easy in the beginning then challenging through the midgame, eventually it became quite easy in the endgame.
Edit: Didn't read any tips for the first game, I wanted to avoid spoilers. I guess I got lucky with picking force field early for Morrigan. It just seemed like a really powerful spell from the description since I quickly noticed that in many boss encounters the problem is having the boss not kill you before you've dealt with his/her minions.

I played through most of the origins and a few characters through Ostagar on Normal to get a good feel for the gameplay and mechanics then turned on hard as a couple of characters moved on into the game a bit. I didn't have much trouble on normal but the first few were pretty challenging until I sorted out some tactics and such and got the hang of how things worked.
I like the challenge of hard (played all the IE games on Core Rules) but I did find a few times I had to drop back to normal to get through a particular battle or two depending on my PC class and party at the time.
I don't mind taking a few reloads to get through a tough battle but I'm not into reloading ad naseum until I just get "lucky" - if I can't work it out withoin a handful of reloads I'll go back to normal - finish the battle and go back to hard again.
