DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION and STEAM incompetence. BioWare BEWARE !

Now I'll cut to the chase. Today my friend bought me a pre-purchase Dragon Age: Origins with his credit card in STEAM and sent me this game as a GIFT (STEAM allows users to gift games to each other). He has confused the titles and bought the usual one, while I want the DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION for it's superb exlusive content. On the STEAM STORE PAGE any of you can see an option that allows you to UPGRADE your game to DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION (DDE). However this option doesn't work. There is no link for it. Ive searched multiple times, googled this problem but never found any answer HOW AND WHEN to UPGRADE it. The only thing I found was on STEAM FORUMS where people talk about inability to make an UPGRADE. Here how they solve the problem - they post a ticket in STEAM support and ask for REFUND which usually happens in 2-3 days and then they buy the DDE. I personally think this is not really a good way but as a matter of fact - the only one available with STEAM.
My friend has already posted a support ticket in STEAM support. I dont think we will be so lucky that they will refund him tomorrow so he can buy me the DDE before the game launches. Its already less than 1 day left till the game release.
The thing is - I think that STEAM is not functioning as it says. It doesnt provide the UPGRADE function as stated nor it tells WHEN it is possible to UPGRADE (I assume it is possible after release).
Now I want to ask questions here and on STEAM FORUMS too.
1. If I upgrade the game after the release - will I still get all the exclusive bonus content from DDE that was promised in STEAM ?
2. Is there any DDE pre-purchase bonus content or the only pre-purchase bonus content is the one that promised in usual edition so DDE content doesn't depend on pre-purchase ?
3. What happens if STEAM (I wouldn't be surprised really) refunds after the game release and my pre-purchase bonus will disappear forever ?
4. What happens if STEAM (still no surprise) won't refund me because their support will find the ticket after release (STEAM doesn't usually refund if game is released and not broken) ? Is it OK that I will play less game than I wanted ? How would a fan feel if he plays a game knowing that there is more available and he couldnt get it because of the slow support department of STEAM ?
5. Why would STEAM refund the users if there are no bonuses to lose for DDE after the release ?
Concluding my text I would like to say that STEAM is not really that bad. Its a good and sometimes comfortable system. BUT (a very big one) it doesn't make me happy that I have to stress myself because STEAM was too greedy to mention any details about DDE UPGRADE (I still hope this is possible after release and no pre-purchase bonuses will be lost for DDE, cause its just a DLC pack and STEAM just wants more customers to buy it before the game release).
Any thoughts and answers will be appreciated. Thank you.

2Naelven: Bioware can answer some of the questions up there. I think they do know everything about their own DLC don't they ?

Take it up with Steam. I don't think Bioware has any say in the matter.
Yup. I don't think we can offer any more advice than what you said you are already doing.. open the steam ticket and see what they can do. I don't think this makes steam incompetent...

In short, buy physical copies.
EDIT: They screwed over a lot of people outside the US with the Borderlands release. The counter counted down to 44 minutes until unlock and then reset to 4 days until unlock. Apparently they screwed up the international release date and put the US one by mistake...and caught it 44 minutes until unlock. Personally I think it was a classic bait and switch. They made international orders think they could get it early through them and then pulled the rug out. I can't prove it, but they've never given me a good vibe. I emailed and canceled my Borderlands and Torchlight pre-orders through them.

Just request a refound and buy the deluxe edition after its gone through, or wait till the game is released and then upgrade to the Deluxe edition.

The solutions I see for you is either to upgrade after the pre-order unlocks, or buy it from Direct2Drive now and hope Steam gives you a refund, which they probably won't. If you don't care about the 3 "bonus items" included in the deluxe version then your third option is to just by the DLC from Bioware, which can be done in game immediately after you finish installing.
In the future use Direct2Drive.

Thanks to Syrellaris and Korruptted. From your words I understand that the only pre-purchase content lays in the original game, so no reason to rush now
The ONLY thing you cannot get without the DDE, will be three in-game items. And quite honestly, you'll find better gear than those, guaranteed. The big thing, Warden's Keep, can be purchased for $7. The wallpapers and soundtrack I'm sure will be leaked somewhere. The Stone Prisoner, and Blood Dragon Armor are both included with any purchase of the game, as well as you also getting the 2 unique items from purchasing through steam (Wicked Oath and Memory Band.)

I fail to understand why people continue to use steam when Direct2Drive gives you unlimited downloads and free backups of your games online permanently, along with 24hour e-mail support which is very friendly and typically replies in less than a day and with a solution.

D2D is horrible, it ignores nearly all laws regarding purchases and distribution, both international and american wise. If you want to be cheated, choose D2D. Steam offers unlimited downloads aswell, aslong as you use your account.

Seriously, what kind of douche comes onto a game forum and announces that he could pirate the game for free but he wants the preorder bonuses???
A really big one.
This guy is un-****-n'-believable.

So does steam
along with 24hour e-mail support which is very friendly and typically replies in less than a day and with a solution.
And no community features. There's a lot of us that run all our game through steam, so we can still talk to friends with a simple shift+tab.
Neither is perfect, but most steam users treat it more like a game briefcase, than a service.
