Hello, I recently got DA: Origin and it's my first time playing the game. I have read the descriptions about the classes and the specializations. The two classes that struck my interest was the Arcane Warrior and the Templar. I'm more of a person who likes hybrid classes who can deal melee damage and also cast a few spells.

Both of these classes seem to be quite tanky. Arcane Warrior being able to cast multiple layers of protective spells and Templar acquiring a strong level of magic resistance. The thing that worries me though is that my friend told me that it's quite hard to tank in the game and usually the main character should go DPS or pure mage since you aren't able to really utilize the protective spells with the Arcane Warrior because enemies tend to go for the squishy ones. He played the Templar and he did not like it for the same reason as the previous complaint - that tanky classes aren't that useful in the game.

I hope someone could give me more information about this.

The main character can play a tank just as well as your companions and better. I have played both version of the tank but playing a tank compared to everything else can be pretty boring, since you don't get those big numbers. But i believe tanks have there uses. Just continue to research about them and experiment

If you want to cast spells I don't think Templar is a good choice so I would go with Arcane Warrior.
I forgot what the Templar spells are. what are they holy smite or something? One Templar spell I think knocks people down which is helpful in preventing spellcasting but I haven't used it myself.

The classic sword and shield tank is arguably the easiest build for a first time playthrough. That would go with the Templar spec -- once it is unlocked, of course.

My only other advice would to to remember that you will be recruiting companions and they too will have much to add to the offensive output.

Tanks are not hard to play I just find them boring because they need to focus on soaking up damage instead of dishing it out.

Let Alistair be your tank. I suggest a healer Mage. that's what I used. You can heal yourself and the party from the start and you don't have to wait to get and use Wynn.

I also suggest you hit Redcliff first. Once you do Redcliff, the game points you in the desired direction.

Of course, the OP asked for advice nearly a month ago, but for posterity... I've never played templars at all, nor arcane warriors particularly far as such, but this "ultimate guide" from elsewhere in the forums is definitely worth reading for anyone thinking to plan ahead for an arcane warrior. I find the templar sort so uninteresting and with such a specialized and seldom-useful skill (plus annoyingly linked storywise to the Chantry), that I don't recommend it... but I'm sure there is some way to have fun playing it. There's a set of templar armor you can pick up at one point in the game, so you'd have that to look forward to. On the other hand arcane warriors are good with any armor... just sayin'
