Okay, so...we all know how it ended. More or less (some of you may still be in the dark, I applaud your will to hold out).
Now, I'm not here to discuss the specifics. I'm here to discuss the kind of execution we would have preferred.
So, let me begin with Dragon Age: Origins as an example. In the end of that game, there were explanations of what happened to each character you were involved with and explanations for every decision you made. You got to see the full outcome.
Mass Effect, from the beginning, seemed to promise something like that. But on a much more massive scale. As you waded through an entire universe and shaped it with each new decision you made, you would get to carry this data across entire full length games. And in the end, not only would you get to see the results of all your decisions, you would have created a universe unique to you. One that could potentially be played in with new DLC or maybe even a completely new sequel as a brand new character. Imagine, a universe shaped by yourself based on decisions as a past character. And you get to play inside of it and not only just see and know the results of what happened. You get to live in the results of those decisions.
Instead, what we got was Bioware throwing this all out the window. The question is why? Was it laziness? I dunno.
Bioware was sitting on a golden opportunity here. Would it require massive amounts of work? Yes. As it would not be an easy feat to write in the thousands of possible variations of a single universe. But, I still think it's doable. Technology has come far enough that it should be possible. The main difficulty mostly remains in the writing. The writers would have to track each decision that carries over or effects the universe in any significant manner and write out the potential results. And while doing so, think about the ripples these kinds of things create and write out even more npc reactions and realistic scenarios that emerge from the results of the decision made.
And what really kind of burns me up is...Bioware could have done all this. They have a dedicated and talented staff of writers. Yet they've completely squandered their abilities. CYOA writers on the Internet could have done a better job at the ending. As an aspiring games writer myself, I'm rather appauled that they would throw golden opportunities like what they had with both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect away like they're trash. (Origins is whole other rant for another day)
If I ever get started on my own game, I would probably set out to do what they did not. A combination of Origins and Mass Effect that combine to keep track of all decisions made and there would be lots of variations in endings and the possibility of continuing on pass that point. A living, breathing, evolving world. Based on what you, the player, do.
Now, what I'm here to ask is, did anyone else expect Bioware to present a wide variety of endings (even if there has to be a "canon" ending they run with for sequels)? Or did I set the bar too high? (and no Bioware, even if your fans set the bar a little high, that still does not excuse poorly written endings and deus ex machinas)
Also, to those that respond, try to keep it spoiler free and flame free. This thread is a discussion on what we rightly expected from the ending and more to the point, it's execution. I'd rather not see "end of line" posted. Thank you, and I'm done ranting...for the moment.
