I felt like the entire Cortez story was wedged into already great content. Why?

I disliked how he kept mentioning his "husband". Like the devs just HAD to take every opportunity to show that they were 'tolerant' by having a ****** character.

I thought of this as well ... but then I wasn't sure if I was just hyper-aware of it becuase it was so different and/or new for a video game.

Put another way:  I don't know that I would've noticed it so much if he kept mentioning his wife.

Or maybe I would've, I don't know.

Didn't bother me at all though ... I applaud BioWare for putting content in their game to appeal to that base.

Yeah he had a husband who he loved, who died horribly.
I wonder if it had been a wife, would you be saying the same.

No I wouldn't, for obvious reasons.

My point was would you consider it in your face?
Or would you accept that his wife was a part of his character and backstory?

Because that's all it is. His husband serves as a reminder of the people who were killed by the Collectors and the people affected by that.

Whole thing is just so painfully forced. Like the male and female extras on the Normandy, Cortez and Traynor. They were so obviously made gay just to appease the crazies on this forum. Gotta love how they tease straight males with Traynor.

I thought it was in my face because he was playing that recording of his loved one VERY loudly in the Shuttle Bay.  And also right by where I buy my fricken' weapon upgrades and change my armor.

Probably would've been handled better if he had been somewhere in the back near the shuttle at the time.  Quiet, personal moment for him.  And also not upon my first introduction to him.

Basically set the whole thing up a little more gracefully.

I felt from the moment I met Cortez that he was not needed to fill out mass effect 3 or 1 or 2.. Why could you call him of all people and not your mom to say goodbye.. ? Weird..

Because not everyone is a spacer. I chose a spacer myself, and was disappointed that there was zero dialogue between mother and child, but... what can you do?

I liked Cortez a lot. I thought he had a good emotional arc through the story, and I loved going down to the shuttle bay to listen to Cortez and Vega trash talk each other.

I got to admit, he was kind of in your face gay. So he's gay, big deal, move on, but then he goes on and on about it and is the only character in the game to bawl his eyes out, it's in like the first 5 horus too. I thought he was a poorly done character overall.

By the way, spewing "homophobe" at anyone not entirely pro-gay helps nobody. It's taking the name calling gays face and turning it back on a majority. Helps nobody at all. Also, actual homophobia is very rare.

The problem here to my mind lies on both sides so to speak. They try to include a gay character because the politically correct current situation in our world is "no problemo with that, it's not a big deal". But then, the way they portrayed him was poorly done and they did make a big deal out of it. It's like the people who are against racism but see it EVERYWHERE even if it's not there. You can't be like "this isn't a big deal" but then play it out as a big deal in a none-too-subtle way.

Edit: jumpingkaede makes a great point

But that's the thing, he wasn't. He doesn't try to bed your or rape you with his eyes, he just mentioned he lost his husband and is going through a crisis, that's it. He's not forcing his sexuality on you.

"to appease the crazies"

Wonderful way to refer to me and others... bravo, I'm just glad we have enough respect to treat each others as human beings and... OH WAIT , NO YOU DON'T RESPECT ME...

I'm really sick and tired of small minded neanderthals.

Didn't mind Cortez. Kaiden really blind-sided me with his gayness though. His whining throughout the entire game didn't help either. I really wanted to go back and have him killed instead of Ashley.

Not that eterna, he broadcasts his personal messages around the ship and bawls his eyes out. Also, if you do decide to be dead on with him as I did, show him respect, meet him for a drink and some chill time to get his head together you end up having to either be like "yes, I just came to this bar to watch strippers" or "I'm eye candy" option. I just wanted to check up on the dude get him through his crap you know? I was there for him to listen as a friend, not to watch strippers or come onto him.

He was required if you wanted to have an obvious pilot. If they made a squad member into the pilot, the programming side and voice over sides would all require much more effort. Alternately, they would have to go for the ME2 style where the pilot is an VI, which would make the number of times the shuttle had to leave or was delayed questionable

Given homophobia is bred in a vacuum (even casual, non-hostile homophobia), those with that quality tend to think that so much as acknowledging the fact that homosexuality is a thing that exists as some manner of propaganda or "agenda-pushing."

If I were to say "not all plant life is green," then their response would be "you are just pushing the deep-sea algae tolerance agenda."

Being intolerant is one thing, but being offended by the mere acknowledgement that something exists is a whole new level.

Haha.  This was another example of where the choices were either bizarre/impropos or linked to a romance.

Where was that option, Bioware?

All the companions broadcast their problems. If it was his wife, you wouldn't blink an eye. You comfort him and be his friend at the memorial, the bar is to instigate a romance if the player so desires. I mean, they have to have a scene that sets up the romance somewhere in the game.

He seemed like a dual attempt to add more of a connection to the events happening elsewhere, as well as to throw in a homosexual character. That sort of thing gets people talking (and not in the totally negative way that the endings have). All in all, it was actually kind of nice to actually know the guy piloting the shuttle. The DA2 very rapid change from just consoling a grieving man to making out with him was a bit... annoying, though.

Cry me a river. His story was no more obtrusive than any other, except he was an anus-invader. If he had kept saying he lost his wife instead of his husband you wouldn't even notice.

How was Traynor any different?

I felt Cortez was an interesting character, because we didn't really see the personal impact from victims of the Collectors in ME2.

There's nothing unnatural about that conversation. If you lost your wife you'd probably be talking about her in the same manner.

It just seems odd to us because we don't have that sort of casual conversation in our culture yet.
