Are here dialogue choices like Mass Effect and Deus Ex: HR?

What about customisation?

Huge hub worlds to explore and talk to people?

Interesting codex like feature?

1. yes,  but these focus on altering outcomes in the plot.

2. no..well each peice of armor or weapon you equip does look different, but you don't customize Geralt.

3. not huge, but sizable sandbox areas for each chapter. Exploration isn't the focus. And yes, you can talk to people and find random NPC's where it will break to a dialog cutscene for you to interact.

4. quite a bit to read in the Journal, and if you don't you'll have a hard time keeping up with the story or finishing side quests.

Biggest difference from Bioware games is that TW2 focuses heavily on a plot that can change by your decisions, but in some ways it feels less personal because Geralt isn't fully yours. You don't shape him like you do Shepard in Mass Effect.

Interesting. So Geralt is his own character? Do you choose between nice or dickish? Or is it changing like Human Revolution? (Occasional choice of sarcasm, cynical or cold).

There is no nice or dickish. Geralt is who he is. The choices we get to make are the decisions whic matter to drive the larger plot. You do get to make personal choices that alter the character and interactions, but not create the character from scratch.

You're playing as Geralt of Rivia, a set character from books by Andrjez Sapkowski.  However you are shaping Geralt's outlook on the political events and on his key relationships, and since in this game Geralt is involved with some of the most influential figures of this world, his choices have a profound effect on its political shape.

The story is a lot about political intrigue and wars between kingdoms in a dark fantasy medieval setting.  If you like a sort of Game of Thrones clash of factions, it has similar themes with the fantasy elements taken mostly from European folklore.

Gameplay wise you also choose whether Geralt specializes in swordplay, alchemy or magical signs.  Witchers are monster fighters who generally were taken as children and put through a process of mutation which leaves them infertile and with certain physical features like golden eyes, but it allows them to have faster reflexes and resistance to potions which would poison a normal human being.  Since they also need to study the monsters they're fighting, herbs and alchemy, there are a lot of in-game books which discuss these as well as myths, legends and political figures in the world.

Not like HR. The dialog choices aren't labeled, with the rare exception of doing a pursuade, intimidate, or hex ( brainwash) response in a tight situation.

You frequently end up dwelling on how your decisions affect the course of the story and all the characters in it, and many times you don't discover the impact of your choice till much later in the game. It's designed to make you live with your choices and not reload for the perfect outcome. Again, compared to Mass Effect, which tends to reward the player right away with each decision, The Witcher delays that reward. Imo it requires greater patience to play.

@OP omg just play the demo

It will give just an idea of what to expect. Granted the prologue doesn't show you everything you'll expect but even during the 1 hour prologue your already making some decisions. Just try it here.

Here's a trailer of what to expect from the game:

I highly recommend getting the game. It's one of the few games truly worth buying, and CDPR is an awesome developer..

Does anyone know if there will be a demo for it going up on XBL?

Definitely. With all the updates, combat is awesome. I didn't think I'd like the first game, but it was better than I thought it'd be and Witcher 2 is even better.

I use my Xbox 360 controller anyway and I haven't had any problems. And unlike other companies, the developers seem to have put a lot of love into the game and it shows.

Yeah, Geralt is a set character. You can make decisions that fit with what he'd make, but don't expect the level of freedom you'd get from crafting your own character.

I am wondering the same thing. What holds me back are the clunky combat system and this image of the franchise trying too hard to be mature but ending up being the opposite.

But it could be just my ignorance.

I thought it was hilarious that people who thought DA II's combat was bad enjoyed the twitchy button mashing of the Witcher II.

That said, they've improved it considerably since release. It's still twitchy, but you won't spend the first ten minutes dying over and over again because you haven't figured out how to time your attacks and blocks.

Have you played Kingdoms of Amalur?

As for the maturity, I'd say it hits the sweet spot for me.

@ OP
Th Witcher 2 is my favorite game of all time because of its story. For me, it's pretty much unrivalled, with a great plot, great characters and great pacing (and sexy politics). Also, how choices and paths are handled. So if you're looking for a very well-written, complex and mature story, TW2 is the game for you.

@ Maria
The Enhanced edition will be a free update if you already own the PC version.

I think I'll pick it up, I've heard they've worked on the combat and that was the only thing holding me back. The story really does look impressive.

Which defeats the purpose since I don't intend on playing it on pc hence the query about an xbox demo.

And yes Ms Caliban, I do hate all the things ;)

How? Connect a 360 controller and it's pretty much the same exact thing and if you don't have the wireless adapter it's still not going to be any different from the 360 version other than superior graphics.

How is it comparable at all? DAII is still your standard click and wait till they die that doesn't require any player skill, while you have full control of blocking and movement in Witcher II and you're rewarded for having good reflexes. But yes it's not perfect, mainly with attacking and targeting with Geraltcopter flying all over the place.
It's both hilarious and heartbreaking when you've having a very good run then suddenly he flings himself into the middle of a crowd where they start playing Geralt pinball.

I think with the latest patch they broke it in the other direction, and after having gotten used to having to aim very precisely it's now too difficult to change targets. Though I think the patches have generally turned the difficulty way down.

You know, in terms of difficulty, differences, etc etc.

Hardest difficulty in the game supposedly. But once you gather all the cursed gear, it can sometimes be quite easy. I killed the Draug in like 7 hits. Honeslty, I think it kinda unbalances the game.

Sounds like the difficulty I want to play on(and I normally stick to easier/normal difficulties).
