Playing as Duncan is to me like playing as Gandalf in a LOTR RPG. They are better off being mysterious, wise figures, not the main character. I'd prefer something at least 10 years after DA1, taking place in another land, confronting a new threat, but perhaps some easter eggs or a side quest here and there relating back to DA1.
Dragonage 2 could work... Just go back to DUNCAN!!!
