Got mine on the 2nd try. I wish there were more bosses like him to fight honestly.
Agreed there seem to lack bosses that heal a lot or regenerate health.

Sadly, I've never gotten the Fade Wall or the Warden's Tower shields.

In all former games, when I didn't know about this shield, I killed him in melee but never got the drop.

You have to find all 3 of the "hints" first, before you will be able to access the place you find him. Otherwise the door is locked and is not pickable. There's a note on a dead adventurer (lower ruins, brecilian forest, room with all the traps) , there's a crazy adventurer in Tapsters and there's a 3rd one (I am not sure I remember atm) (dead knight, temple of the sacred ashes) .
Sadly, I've never gotten the Fade Wall or the Warden's Tower shields.

Two words: mana clash
QFT. I think I got the Heavy Hitter achievement using that spell on Gaxxkang.
I've never really been a sword'n'boarder. I've never got the shield but, to be honest, is it worth putting on an Arcane Warrior while having *no* Shield talents? I didn't think the stats were all that great...
I'm thinking of just slapping together a cheap and nasty mod that just gives me whatever gear I want when I turn it on. I hate these ultra-low drop rate concepts.

When you kill the guy with this spell does not mean, that the drop is guaranteed.
It is just the most convenient way, because you don't have to go through a lengthy melee fight over and over again.
Go in, mana clash, check loot. No shield? Repeat. Thus, you can kill him a couple of times within some minutes. Mostly the drop occurs after the second or third try.
OTOH I agree: The shield is definitely not worth the efforts, if one has no need for *another* good shield.

I think my issue is that since I have no shield talents then I won't be able to do anything offensive with it. Dual wielding a Dagger and Sword is fine as even without any talents of that type, I still get to use both weapons simultaneously and still get the worth of raining down blows.
Do characters use their shield as a weapon without having shield talents?

IMO no. In some games I gave a shield to Lelianna until she leveled up. Some animations showed her blocking incomming blows, but as we know in the meantime, this is just eye candy. She never used it in an offensive way.
As far as I can tell, a shield for a non-talented character boosts defence and that's it.
Of course there is the argument to use a shield as an additional stat-boost. If I remember correctly the "Fade Wall" has interesting stats for an AW, right?

As I mentioned, the stats aren't that great. Certainly not good enough to compensate for the loss of the damage against enemies that having a dagger in the off hand would.
As far as I could see, it gave a 25pt bonus to mana, some minor defence boost, and a boost to healing spells, plus the basics you'd get from a Silverite shield. Considering I'm also incurring a 6% fatigue hit on top of the loss of damage done then I'm not really sure just how useful it actually is.

I finally got it on a Casual play without ever switching - wierd.
As an aside, he was in the melee form several of the kills, including the last room.

I think Reinoc has the right of it - you get the Fade Wall shield only if nobody in your party falls. I was trying to play entire game on Nightmare, got frustrated, switched to Normal and got the drop first time. I reloaded my Nightmare save, made sure none of my party fell and sure enough got the drop again.Reinoc wrote...
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I got it on my 4th try, the only time nobody in my party died.
I don't believe there is a drop rate on this item, nor does it matter what difficulty is set.
Oh, and you might like to try http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=573 to fix healing bug

Easy: No plays, no drop
Normal: 5 plays, no drop
Hard: 4 plays, 2 drops
Nightmare: 1 play, no drop
May have had some party falls on the first two or so times while still learning the finer points of the game, but since then? It tends to be a fairly quick fight.

I don't think difficulty matters, as i can manage to get it on any difficulty within 3-4 tries

ya, I just killed him approx 50 times. He always dies in Sword/Shield mode, his forms are based off what % of HP he's at.
Actually I killed Gaxkang, on Nightmare, 15+ times and sometimes he died in spirit form -- it was probably because I used Petrify and he couldn't change but...
Oh and I'm still trying to get the shield
