it's not that he / they whatever filed a complaint that poses the problem. it's that this guy made a topic announcing that he had made the complaint that this article then in turn quoted that seems to be the issue. there's a saying about hindsight right? i can say that i've thought about doing something similar because i am disgruntled but i haven't and i'm trying to have patience with BW/EA. I've voted in the polls, i've got my banner in the signature, i'm in the facebook group, i'm absorbed in the fight with constructive posts. this guy went to the ftc/bbb... that was his right and his choice which is fine. it just means we need to think about what we're posting and where we're posting it. hopefully there's a lesson learned here.

Someone just compared the ending to the Holocaust on Twitter. Not exactly positive attention.

Calm down~  This kind of doomsaying is way out there and totally unnessecary.  This was a report filed to the FTC, the place where consumers go to report their complaints, not a one man march on Bioware HQ or a suicide threat.  It is not legal action, and it is not going to start anything like what you've said.

The FTC complaint is merely an indicator - as is the fact we know how unprecedented the backlash is - that folks are prepared to 'over-react' in a response to the ending controversy. Bioware knew the ending would be controversial since they made it but I don't think they quite anticipated just how extreme a response there would be.

This kind of hyperbolic rhetoric is exactly what the articles against us use and want from us, so that they can in turn spin it all out of proportion and make us look bad.  These are the "news" out;lets that have tried to make our movement look selfish because of our donations to charity.

Human nature is, by it's very nature unpredictable. Let's face it, there are instances every few years of folks killing themselves over their team being beaten in the World Cup - I suppose there are things that folks have a much greater emotional connection to than people realise. I'm not saying any of this would happen - but that we have to consider just how unknown the territory this game's ending has us stepping into is.

A random post on BSN has little weight. Then again, there are more and more aggressive tactics being used by some of the games media itself to both support and chastise the fans for wanting a better ending. Sooner or later, one of these 'experts' is going to make the same point - and that's when the media will pounce because they have a more reliable source that a lot of folks will immediately trust.

The FTC isn't going to sue anyone over this, or take legal action against anyone.  They're going to note that people have complaints and issues with a product made and sold to them by Bioware and EA and that's it.  It helps get the word out a little more, and that's a good thing.  The worst, the absolute worst, that could happen to Bioware or EA over this?  They get a note from the FTC about how one of their products has gotten a large influx of complaints.  And that only happens if a whole lot of people file with the FTC.

I agree. My posts were referring to the games-playing public at large, not this specific case. This specific case merely alerts us to the fact that there are those people out there who react much more aggressive and irrational to the relative few who visit these boards. It's also a 'spotlight' title - the controversy has actually made the news in a number of places and momentum is only just starting to build. This means the 'powers that be' in the media will be looking very closely for a way to use this sort of thing as another attack on video games, and if even a single person goes too far then that will be the first shot fired by the media.

Speaking of going too far, I find some of the comments people have put on that story abhorrent.

And lots of them are hurting the Retake ME cause by saying things like "The endings weren't that bad..."

Just leave it be IMO.

IT. IS. NOT. LEGAL. ACTION. LEARN YOUR RIGHTS AS A CONSUMER.

I believe it to be a matter of tact, rather than extremities. I agree with Militarized, filing complaints with the FTC or the BBB are somewhat pointless unless done enmasse (which won't happen even with the endings as they are).

If you truly believe Mass Effect is a product between Developer and Consumer, you keep your issues between the two of you until the last possible outcome. We have yet to reach the last possible outcome.

Even so, purporting a subjective product like a video game, a book ,or a movie as being falsely advertised is a stretch, and will most likely be a waste of their and, more importantly, your time.

Thoughts?

I was strongly against it because it sends the wrong symbolic associations.

When I first saw this a couple days ago (?), I thought he was suing the company, and that would definitely be crossing the line. But what exactly does a FTC complaint do? I'm curious.

Going to the FTC isn't going too far, it is well within the rights of the individual consumer to make a complaint, that is why the FTC exists.
It isn't the path i would have taken, as the penalties to the company could be quite severe (in the off chance they decide they have a valid case), but hey, he made the call.

Taking it too far, indeed. First wait for a response from Bioware. An official response about the endings, maybe a Q&A with us. It's been just two weeks since the game was released...

This is fine. The more pressure people put on them, the more likely they will be to change behavior. How can people be outraged about endings which they believe violated promises made, and not want to take action?

I hate how some people are like "These endings are terrible you must change them! But I love Bioware and Bioware is awesome, etc, etc." If you're going to be mad, dagnabbit, then be mad.

Well honestly, we were lied to about certain things that were supposed to be in the game. It has nothing to do with the ending. And if there's any merit behind that, I'd say go for it.

However the false information came from interviews for the most part, so I don't think that counts as advertising exactly. So it's most likely a waste of time.

Actually, reporting a business to the FTC is not wrong. The FTC can't and won't do something if the situation doesn't merit investigation.

And, if Bioware/EA doesn't do something in the next couple months, this guy might have started the ball rolling for a very legitimate investigation.

I hope that all works out and that the situation gets resolved without this, but if anything, he had a better idea than the people trying to boycott multiplayer.

Why is this too far?

He's a consumer, that feels he wasn't given what was promised. Instead of just "hoping" they will do right by him, he's taking legal steps to make sure the conversation doesn't leave the table (or fade away). Trust me, BioWare and EA want this to happen.

While I personally would not do what he did, I don't see why people are calling the guy crazy. He's doing what any consumer should do if they legitimately feel they were lied to, or were a victim of false advertisement.
