There seems to be a lot of insinuation going around that people who want a new ending want it to be a happy ending.  Including a comic from penny arcade: penny-arcade.com/comic/2012/03/16

As far as I understand it people just want an ending that makes sense.  I for example was prepared to see more people die.  I was prepared that Shepard might have to sacrifice himself.  I was prepared for all that, what I wasn't prepared for was some godchild coming out of nowhere and saying that  everything I had done up to that point (creating an alliance with the Geth, treating EDI like she was a member of the crew) did not matter.  That's when Bioware lost me.  Then as people have stated before I see the Normandy running away which makes no sense and I see the Mass Relays exploding which contradicts the start of the game and the end of Arrival where it is established that a Relay being destroyed results in an explosion like a supernova, destroying the star system its in.  Which means Earth is doubly screw since it has the Charon relay and the Citadel in orbit which was established to be a giant mass relay.

So what I think needs to be discussed is what people expected and why what they got did not meet those expectations and possible solutions going foward to fix this.

it's not a myth. I speak for myself and I do want an ending where Shepard lives, crew survives, the fleets intact and earth doesn't get taken out by a supernova. I don't care about relays, if everyone has to settle on earth so be it. I want to live with humanity's bffs.

If people want to keep saying that its a myth that people want a happy ending and want to be taken seriously than polls like this: http://social.biowar...m/1003710/polls need to stop happening. There are far too many threads and polls where people say they want a happy ending.

The comic: Still a better ending than what we got.

It's not a myth. A happier ending is indeed part of what people want.

Now, why is that a bad thing?

I want a happy ending, and I know I'm not alone. I wouldn't mind a bittersweet ending, but I would really prefer if Shepard and the crew were given an ending where they all live.

I think the ending does to some level make sense. They cut a lot of content out (based on what was gathered from Final Hours) to keep it mysterious (though perhaps a bit too much mystery to be satisfying IMO). Ultimately, I wanted more varied endings that actually took my decisions into consideration and not as just some multiplier.

It's not a myth, I for one DO want a happier ending.

A happy ending is no more cliche than a sad ending.

It's not a myth that some people want a happier ending.

The myth is that the lack of the happy ending is the primary motivation for our discontent. Even most of those who want a 'happier' ending have stated explicitly that they would be OK as long as the ending made more sense, provided closure, and wasn't so horribly out of place and jarring.

I want an RPG ending that will make it worthwhile to play to "Shep is happy" and "Shep sarcifices himself" outcomes.

Options are the friend of role-players.

I want a happy ending.

I want a sad ending.

You can't have both? Isn't the lack of choices one of the major complaints here? Dragon Age offered a wide variety of options for how, or even if, the hero could die at the end. It should have been similar here.

I'm ok with Shepard dying. I just want it to make some sense.

I think a happy ending should be an option, but not the only one. Your actions should have consequences which may or may not result in the cheeriest possible outcome.

The myth is that you can lump up everyone into the same group. Some people want a happy ending. Some people want an ending that makes more sense. Some people want an ending that highlights your impact more. Some people want some sort of combo. Some people want icecream cone reapers.

I'd settle for an ending that cleans up the continuity problems. I'd be thrilled if they detailed a bit as to what the survivors did after (since they opened that pandora's box by tacking on the Sir Joker ran away bit).

It is most certainly NOT a myth. I want a happier ending, along with a lot of other people.

if you got "what you expected" you'd be upset that it was too predictable.

I just want an ending :P In my head I don't think of ME3 as finished, because... it doesn't seem finished.

Feels kind of like watching the finale episode of a really great tv show when all of a sudden the reception cuts out.

Well, an ending that bears some relation to what has happened in the games would be a good start. I think there should really be a survive option, but maybe make that the renegade path (i.e. sacrifice other people instead of yourself) rather than an actually straight happy ending. I don't think a massive war with billions dead should really end up being all fluffy bunnies.

It's not a myth that people want happy endings. I want a happy ending. Doesn't mean I want it to be easy to get, or that it should be "rainbows and butterflies", or that it's my only issue with the ending, which IS the myth being perpetuated.

That's the perception being thrown out there as disinformation to get people to think that we're all entitled crybabies.

What we're really asking for is a series of options that reflects what you did. If you did everything you possibly could to get the job done, it makes sense for the game to offer that. Just like the Suicide Mission; you pick the right people and do the loyalty missions and you don't lose anybody.

If you didn't do everything you could and rushed to the end of the game without enough war assets, then a nasty, everyone dies ending is entirely appropriate.

We never asked for sunshine, prancing unicorns, and a scene with Shepard and Love Interest running in slow motion toward each other in verdant meadows.

We asked for a Mass Effect ending. Nothing more or less.

People want endings, not a single happy/sad/bittersweet ending. Ending like this might work in a different kind of game but not in a game that calls itself an RPG.

I want choice. Kinda like the Dragon Age: Origins endings where you had a vast array of different outcomes including the "happy" ending...

To be honest I hate the term "happy" ending anyway, I'd like Shepard to be reunited with his/her crew/LI, I'm not bothered about seeing them make babies or have a party because they would feel out of place in the game... just Shepard climbing out of the rubble to rejoin the rest of his/her team would suffice.
