Yeah, gotta chime in here - this is definitely not a myth. A lot of us genuinely want the possibility of a happy ending.

All this nonsense about the current endings being 'bittersweet' seems to disregard the fact that in addition to a ton of war casualties and seriously jacked-up planets, there's no way to get to the end of the game without having lost some personal friends/teammates along the way. So by 'happy', we don't mean none of that happens or that everything's magically okay - we mean that maybe our protagonist and a few of the people closest to him/her have a chance for a future with some happiness in it - you know, while they spend probably most of their lives rebuilding the half-destroyed galaxy. That's all.

I'm all for a super happy ending. I'm all for a super sad ending. And an actual bitter-sweet one. I just want the option to get these different endings with the different choices I've made. But most of all, I just want an ending that gives closure, cuts outs the plotholes, and just generally makes sense.
