I've heard this argument before, and it's quite flawed. Why don't you ask a black minister what he thinks about his people's stuggle for civil rights being compared to the agenda of the homosexual mafia?
I will do much better than that. Here is a quote from civil rights activist Coretta Scott King. She is the wife of civil rights icon the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of
lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial
justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said,
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

If Bioware were really after courting controversy, just think of what they could have added: A transgender stereotype. As in a character you romance only telling you after you've been intimate. This is a cliche in a fair few TV 'dramas' as is, and is certainly incendiary. Personally, I'd have quite liked to see a TG at some point, just to see how they're percieved in the future (one would hope everyone is a little more openminded than currently at least).
Technically not TG, but just to reming you, all Asari are hermaphrodite. Think about that while you romance Liara.
Seriously, I'm fine with anything Bioware does as long as they do not go for the weirdness of DA2 by making everyone bisexual. Steeve was a good character, a credible, ordinary gay male.
Nononnononnono
Liara was female, don't fill my mind with that

Second thread having a go at Cortez relating to his sexuality or singled him out in a negative way for it in past few hours, beginning to think Bioware attracted way to many homophobic players as well as way to many emotionally deficient gamers unable to handle negative outcomes and reactions in how to deal with writers and developers choice in creating the story they wish to tell.
^ Just to add some of these so called 'fans' (imho) are better off not being fans at all, Bioware and the community would be better off without their distasteful and nasty antics and small mindedness. This place would be a far less hysterical, vitriolic and hyperbolic in nature which probably puts off many from actually taking part or being part of the community.
Seconded, thirded and fourthed.

I don't pursue them myself, but that doesn't mean I can't like the characters as people. Heck I like Cortez, I like the addition of my shuttle pilot being there and giving feedback. Hell it actually makes me wish I could've had a shuttle pilot back in ME2.
And I really like Traynor. I think she's a fine addition to the crew. I mean I also would've liked Kelly Chambers to be back, maybe in the mess hall, but not at the sacrifice of Traynor.
Honestly the additions to the crew I didn't like were Diana Allers (Emily Wong died for your mistake) and James (I just felt that we really didn't need the style of character he was.)

You can't expect every character to be gay or bisexual. I stated in the past that with the need for procreation and the fact that sex, as a whole, is dangerous for Quarian it's doubtful that relationships that don't end in reproduction would be looked upon positively. In fact they could be viewed as detrimental to the fleet, and as Tali said, it's all about the Fleet.
Except that they monitor their reproduction constantly. Quarians, more than any other race, are into birth control and population management. Yeah, so, it all comes down to emotional attachments.

They go out of their way to make sure you know that any romance option is a choice. Characters of all sexualities hit on you in the series.

I thought Steve's romance was a little odd, but it didn't seems forced to me because it was quite a while before I went to the bar with him, therefore it seemed like he probably would have/should have let Robert go by then (although i noticed on my second playthrough you can go there with him almost as soon as he drops the photo on the wall which seems like a strange thing for them to do)
Finally using logic of x feature pleases 10% of the community and therefore we shouldn't spend resources on it in order to please theat 10% because they are in the minority is a bit silly. 10% of the audience is a pretty significant amount (standard business rules <5% usually ignore, >10% investigate and if it is between the 2 use your own judgement) What you need to do with a feature like this is judge the amount of resources to spend on it. So spend enough resources that the 10% feel happy but so that it doesn't diminish the rest of the game and I really think Bioware have succeeded in this.

Blatant homophobia aside, from a gay guy's perspective...
Steve was a terribly written character. I did kind of feel sorry for him and his husband, but that flew out the window right at the point of his coming onto me in the bar. My first reaction was "Dude, wtf? I'm glad I helped you get over your loss, but you're trying to pick me up 5 minutes later?". It just seemed so wrong. I went on to ask my bf about it and he had the same reaction.
Retconning Kaidan didn't sit well with me either and his dialogue seemed forced. Maybe it's because I know what the voice actor looks like and...don't exactly find him attractive. In fact, well, quite the opposite. I did end up pursuing him as my LI, but mostly because I waited to finally have an ME LI all these years.
All in all however, kudos to BioWare for doing it. It did feel like a victory of sorts.
LMAO! I thought the same thing! I loved to have finally developed a LI with Kaidan with my Manshep. "Damn took him long... I been hinting it all this time... I must be bad at it!"
I disagree.
I loved the Kaidan romance. I felt like the whole "I had a torch for you all this time but didnt have the courage to say cos ur a scary butch marine" thing made sense to me.
lol.
EDIT:
Plus I love Rafael Sbarge's voice.

While incorporating homosexuality into games is no big deal, forcing it into games is. Bioware has been pretty fail at this lately.
This I agree with. It felt forced in ME3. Not sure why, but it didn't feel just like a part of the scenery like everything else. I'm not sure it was their intention, but it seemed patronizing as well: "Here is your gay scene with your gay guy, here is your lesbian soldier looking for her wife .. see, we're hip and progressive!". It just seemed very forced to me.
Because in a world where: people are generally ethnically ambiguous and intermixed, the main character can die in a way would have obliterated them and made any prospect of a body being recoverable impossible, where humans and turians and quarians can engage in a physical sexual relationship, the gay romance feels "forced"....
The only forced thing was the fact that gay Shepard was not included sooner.
I just can't with this anymore. Guess what folks? You have to learn to share your toys and deal with it. That's it.

Umm does that include rendering and animation??? You realise it takes several weeks to fully render, voice and animate a cut scene? And they are restricted by time constraints and memory constraints.
At the end of the day, these scenes were far too much for one character that most people were not going to engage with. If used on the ending instead, there would be far less complaining than there is now.
Actually I consult with EVERY member of my crew after EVERY mission. Been done that way since ME1, Done it in ME2. Seems to work out pretty well.
